Urgent Help Needed - Xanthum And Guar Gum ?

I'm making a cake (for tonight of course!) and the recipe calls for 1.5 cups of gluten-free flour mix. It says to add xanthum gum if flour mix doesn't have it. I'm using Beth's flour (which has guar gum). Do I still add the xanthum gum even thought Beth's has guar gum or does the guar take care of it?

I also have Bob's Red Mill flour mix I could use or I have white rice, brown rice, tapioca, and potato starches/flours if anyone would suggest I go a different route.

Help!!!

If the flour mix you are using has quar gum, you do not need to add additional xanthan. They serve the same purpose.

Hope this helps!

Thank you!

I LOVE this board and everyone here! I was standing in the kitchen in a panic (of course we're having company for dinner and I decide NOW to scrutinize my recipe) and thought...THE BOARD! Surely someone will be on there that knows the answer! I thought they did the same, but I'm very new to this and have only made one other cake not from a mix. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

OK, back to the kitchen!

The cake turned out terrific! I wouldn't even have known it was gluten free had I not baked it myself!

Thanks again for your help!

Congratulations on your cake success. ;) That website or book did you use for your recipe? I always like to try ones that are TNT.

Correct. I’m doing both in the same go though. Thanks for clarifying before I confused someone. I’m doing a colonoscopy for something else and then they added the endoscopy after the test.

It is a biopsy but it's not a colonoscopy, it's an endoscopy.

Well I’m going on the gluten farewell tour so they are about to find out lol. I keep saying biopsy but yeah it’s a scope and stuff. I’m a dummy but luckily my doctor is not.

The biopsy for celiac disease is done of the small bowel lining and in conjunction with an "upper GI" scoping called an endoscopy. A colonoscopy scopes the lower end of the intestines and can't reach up high enough to get to the small bowel. The endoscopy goes through the mouth, through the stomach and into the duodenum, which is at the upper end of the intestinal track. So, while they are scoping the duodenum, they take biopsies of the mucosal lining of that area to send off for microscopic analysis by a lab. If the damage to the mucosa is substantial, the doc doing the scoping can often see it during the scoping.
