I'm partaking in a small class trip to Athens and Rome in about a month. And I have no idea how to accomodate my celiacs disease needs. Any ideas, suggestions, or advice?

Hi

unfortunately no one has ever heard of celiac disease in Greece....the rate here is really low, it is the lowest in europe (i' ve read that it is 1 in 11.000 people. I don't know if it is true) so there are no gluten-free restaurants. You can always try to order things like beef, potatoes, stuffed tomatos and rice that are gluten-free. I would not eat souvlaki if I were you cause they cook it in the same place with bread so you will get cc.

but you can find some healthy stores that have gluten-free products. The biggest one is in the center of athens, in this adress:panepistimiou 54.

please let me know if you have any other questions about your visit in athens. Are you staying in the city all the time? cause the temerature is so high right now....Maybe visiting the islands some days would be a good idea???

Hi

I travel to Greece a lot as my sister lives there. Although they do not have a lot of coeliacs they do fully understand the illness and most hotels and restaurants can cater for you. I had a dietary medical card translated by my sister in English and Greek and find that when I show it the staff will tell you what you can have. I am happy to email you a copy of this, I'm not sure how this works as this is my first time on this site. I am searching all coeliac websites as I am moving to Corfu next year and am setting up my own coeliac hotel.

As for Italy, they are much more aware of the illness as they have more sufferers there. Many places are specifically for Coeliacs and most people are aware of it. Italy also has their own Coeliac Society you can find this on the web. There are also some free european medical cards for eating out for free on the web.

I hope that this is helpful to you.

Brenda

Very sensitive coeliac. Diagnosed 2 years almost.

Thanks for the info. I would love it if you could send me a copy of that card and maybe the website of the Italian Celiac's Society you mentioned. My email is westviewgirl2003@yahoo.com. I'm new to this too.

Thanks

Alexis

When I went to Europe I took dinning cards in the languages of the countries I was in. That helped.

New here as well lots of things learning I’ve discovered lots of foods have sneaky gluten so be mindful how is it going?? I have issues when I do cocktails 🍸 I don’t know if it is gluten free or not but get horrible side effects and so many others ooh well we are all learning how to cope with this….

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
