Can't Digest Chocolate?

We are very new to the gluten free diet and still learning... but we also notice other things in my son's digestion that lead us to believe that he is intolerant of chocolate and lactose.. but it's tough to figure out b/c he only seems to get bad poops from dairy when it's alot like ice cream. I know nothing about intolerances and things, I've never had to deal with them until now. I am not intolerant of anything really, except maybe really spicy food and I am allergic to Pesatchios, lol, which i don't mind b/c i don't like them.

Is anyone else intolerant of chocolate.. and what can you tell me about lactose intolerance? When my son eats alot of chocolate or if he has ice cream his poops can look like "coffee grounds" ....

It is extremely common for celiacs to be lactose intolerant (and casein) at least until the villy is healed. It is usually a sign that everything is back to normal when they can consume lactose again.

I am one of them, and I think that about 90% in this forum are like me. Maybe you could visit a specified doctor and check other food intolerances (check out my signature....). I am not saying that this is the case of your son, but there is a possibility that he has more intolerances than lactose and casein. That is all a side effect of celiac, and it will gradually go away.

Hope he will soon feel better.

Since most chocolate I've heard of contains dairy, I have to wonder if it's that. I suppose you could try some dairy-free chocolate, or make some hot cocoa with almond or rice milk or something. Just avoid Rice Dream, because it contains gluten (even though it claims gluten-free on the package).

My son has a diary intolerance as well. He is 1 1/2 and it's pretty obvious if he's had dairy. Hopefully soon he will be able to eat it again because he really needs the fat in the whole milk. This is a critical growing time for him and I hate cutting it out.

B's girl...give him coconut milk and coconut fat. Very healthy for him.

Could be a dairy allergy. You could try Enjoy Life chocolate chips.

I was also going to say that it could be a dairy allergy. My reaction is similar to your son's. When I completely eliminated dairy I could see my reaction to small amounts or types of dairy that I thought I wasn't reacting to. I also had a significant reduction in nasal stuffiness.

This site shows the difference between allergy and lactose intolerance. Note the 3 types of allergies to dairy.

My Mother is allergic to chocolate because of the cocoa.

Hi there, I have a few questions about my daughter who is 2 and has been gluten-free for two weeks following her diagnosis please! She was originally diagnosed due to having faecal impaction and chronic constipation. Since starting the gluten-free diet, we are still on daily movicol but she is pooping a lot more than before. Could this finally be her naturally clearing out the backlog as her digestive system is actually starting to work again? Secondly the colour of her stools has recently been a bit pinkish. It does not look like blood, but I wondered if this is normal again for a colour shift post diet change? Finally, she has had a very large tummy due to the coeliac. How long does this take to go down? Thank you!

Everything I had was included in the cruise fare. The coffee at cafe al baico is not but,  ALL baked goods are! If you want a coffee, latte, or espresso the charge is $4 to $5. Not bad for some excellent coffee! The buffet and spa cafe has free coffee and drinks. Also large selection of the best ice cream, sorbet, and gelato at sea for free!  with Celebrity I don’t feel like I have a handicap.

I love that there's wheat all over the wall paper for the gluten-free section. It looks good. Was the café included in the free meals or was that extra?

The best gluten-free pizza is on the Celebrity Summit, but the Celebrity Beyond Pizza still beats and land gluten-free pizza.
