I have a 9 year old who has been having weight loss and vomiting. She had an endoscopy today. They took some biopsies. Her lower stomach was real red, inflamed, and irritated. The doctor could not tell right off what that could be since she is on prevacid 2x day Any thoughts on what can cause the irritatiion?

My non-physician opinion is that vomiting can irritate the stomach like that, although the fact that it is in the lower stomach is concerning. Did the doctor look at her intestines today? If not, has she had any constipation? And, have you noticed any rhyme, reason, or pattern to the vomiting?

I just read your other post. It looks like you made the connection between constipation and vomiting already. You mentioned that you have gluten in your household. I've heard other people say they can make this work, but others are so sensitive, I wonder if she is getting cross contamination anyway. If that's the case, it's no fault of yours - this gluten monster is a tricky one.

I'll share a story with you. I was diagnosed a summer when I was living with my mom. I got better on the gluten-free diet while I was with her, but really truly improved when I moved back into my apartment by myself. I was fine for the 6 months I lived by myself, but when I moved in with a roommate this January I started feeling dizzy, my stomach was a little big, but I had gained weight, too. But my classic symptom never manifested itself. When I left my roommate's apartment for a week in April, the vague symptoms I couldn't pin down went away. Each time I returned to the apartment after that, I had my classic reaction.

We didn't share utensils or any food or sponges - nothing. I cleaned religiously before I used the kitchen. I never figured out where exactly the contamination came from, but it was there.

I can't say with certainty one way or another if this is the case for you. But, if it is possible for your household to go gluten-free, you may give it a try. And, as I'm sure you already are, keep following closely with your doc.

      Thank you for the warning. I get blood tests twice a year to check where I stand with the vitamins I regularly take, so I appreciate the extra reminder. I know some vitamins don’t build up but now I will watch the B6 for sure.

      I think you would do well to take a high potency B-complex such that you get more balanced dosage across the spectrum of B vitamins. They work in concert.

      Around 5 years ago I visited Tokyo, and luckily had my sister in law with me who is from there, otherwise it would have been more difficult. The bottom line is that there are tons of naturally gluten-free food options there, but you need to be able to communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Here is a gluten-free restaurant card for American visitors in Tokyo. It includes a request for a gluten-free meal and mentions common gluten-containing ingredients to avoid, like soy sauce and miso. Japanese:   You can also download the Google Translate app, and besides being able to help you speak with people there about this, it has a camera app that translates Japanese text to English in your camera, so you can use it when shopping in a supermarket.

      Be careful about how much B6 you take, as it can cause issues if you take too much of it over time.
