Pain In Arms And Legs

Does anyone have any recommendations for pain in arms and legs. I have tried a few supplements, they did not seem to help. It is almost like my skin hurts to be touched and they have an acheing sensation that makes it near impossible to grip things or sometimes walk properly. I have only been on the diet for eight months, and have just had an accidental gluten intake, been very sick and now dealing with extreme pain.

Thank you!

Have you seen a dr about it? It may have nothing to do with celiac. To me it sounds neurological rather than muscular (because of your skin being so sensitive.)

If this has appeared only with the glutening it may be part of the inflammatory response in your body. It does sound like neuro impact are you taking a sublingual B12 supplement? That won't help with the pain but will help the nerves restore proper function which may help in the long run.

When I get glutened I haven't found much that will completely relieve this other than the time passing and the antibodies reclearing my system. I do find that hot baths and showers help and I take baby asprin for the inflammation. If this continues make sure you are not reglutening yourself and do keep in mind that not everything is celiac. If you continue to feel worse and don't recover in a reasonable amount of time do check with your doctor just to make sure you don't have anything else going on.

I have same pain before... when I consult my dr. tell me to take B complex vitamins especially B-12 tablets daily after mils and it was very useful indeed

I definitely agree with the sublingual B12 recommendation. I'd also recommend magnesium, and possibly zinc.

But it is also true that symptoms often become pronounced after being gluten-free a while. So it may be more a matter of recovery from the glutening.

Do you have a particular brand of supplements you recommend? I use to work in the supplement industry and I know there are a lot of products that are not very good. Thank you so much for your help.

The brand I prefer depends on the particular nutrient. The B12 is from Source Naturals, while the magnesium and zinc are from NOW Foods. You're right - there is a lot of junk out there in supplement land.

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give them some chemical stability for shelf life.

Thank you so much! I will look for that.

@llisa, back then when you tried magnesium and it upset your tummy, I'm guessing you were using the most common form of magnesium found on store shelves, namely, magnesium oxide. It has a reputation for having a laxative effect. It is not very well absorbed and so draws a lot of water into the colon, just like the laxative known as milk of magnesia. I'm guessing if you would switch to the "glycinate" form of magnesium you would not have this problem. Magnesium glycinate is absorbed much better. If you can't find magnesium glycinate at your local stores, you can order gluten free brands of it off of Amazon.

I've tried magnesium before. Twice in 2 years. It really upset my stomach. And that was before this celiac disease diagnosis. (Finally, after 2 years of trying to find out what was wrong with me.) I have no idea how sensitive I am. When my stomach was upset, I'd go to my comfort foods: cream of wheat, cheese and crackers, scrambled eggs and toast...so, making myself worse by trying to feel better.  Just got results of biopsy yesterday, so today is first day of trying no gluten and reading that it can be hiding in vitamins and meds. So, I welcome ALL advice and personal experiences. No advice is too basic. I know nothing. Thank you!

Have you considered also supplementing with magnesium and zinc? We usually recommend these two as well. D3, Calcium and Magnesium all important for bone and nerve health.
