Hey all.

I haven't been diagnosed as having Celiacs - I really don't think I have it, either. However, I am allergic/sensitive to gluten, and it seems like it may be secondary to my hypo. I posted here a long time ago, haven't been back since.

Because I didn't realize I had a problem with gluten till a year or so ago, it's been really hard to cut it out. What can I say, I like bread! I justify with things like "oh, that smells so good.. eh, I'll take the punishment later!", or "well, I already glutened myself yesterday, so it doesn't really matter today". Bad me :(

Anyway, my husband and I have TTC several times before, each time with no luck for months on end. Around the last time I made a concerted effort to cut gluten, we decided that although we can't handle the disappointment of actually TTC, we'd forget the condoms and "whatever happens, happens".

Well, I made it a month without gluten, lost 18 lbs (yay!).. and then screwed up for the last week. I'm also 5 days late now.

Will this past week of gluten every day pretty much screw me over? If I get back on the wagon now, assuming I actually managed to conceive (still not getting my hopes up too much!), is there any chance I can avoid serious problems with the pregnancy?

I went undiagnosed through 2 pregnancies. The only "problem" I had was in my 6th month I lost about 5 pounds (with both pregnancies) and the doctors just told me to eat more. They didn't even consider this to be a problem and didn't run and tests. My first baby was born with celiac and not diagnosed until age 4. My second baby didn't get celiac until about 1 year old (diagnosed at 18 months). I thought feeling horrible during my pregnancies was related to celiac, so after going gluten free for 1 year, I got pregnant again. The only thing that was different about this pregnancy was that I never lost weight (still haven't, ha ha ha) and gained much more weight (about 10 pounds more). Pregnancy is an amazing thing and somehow, my babies developed normally and were protected while in utero. They came out weighing normally and with all their parts. Somehow nature takes care of things. Good luck.

@Itsabit, Ask your doctor for an erythrocyte transkelatose test to measure thiamine.  It's a better measure of thiamine deficiency than a serum test.

Most toothpastes are naturally gluten-free, but this article may be helpful:

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Thank you for your response. It has some good information for me to investigate further. In answer to your question about Vit D, yes, and it was normal. I am having the B12 level done today. Additionally, I am going to have a urine to test for iodine, after a correlation with it to dermatitis herpetiformis was mentioned in another post. I had read that in my research as well. I am praying that I don’t have that! The dietary restrictions, esp when combined with eating gluten free are horrendous! Talk about malnutrition! Anyway, one step, one day at a time. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself. Not easy.

I'd like to second supplementation.  Around the time of my diagnosis and for a good while afterwards I had twitching muscles, including my face, as well as pins and needles and numbness.  We do have tremors in my family anyway, regardless of being coeliac, so I can't really comment on that. If you can find out where you are with your iron levels and B12, that's a good start.  I am not sure where you are posting from but in the UK normal lab results for B12 are quite a bit lower than in other countries, so you might find if you are borderline you will get some improvement by continuing to supplement that.   I found taking magnesium also incredibly helpful against facial twitches. I don't know about you, but all these symptoms increased my anxiety levels as I was worried about them.  That only served to make the symptoms worse.  So it might be worth looking into addressing any underlying anxiety issues.   I still notice that if I'm nervous, or worried, my blood sugar levels are down, some of the symptoms comes back temporarily.  It's like there is still a bit of a weakness there.
