Testing For Deficiencies?

Green Eyes

Is there a specific blood test to see if I am deficient in vitamins? I've been reading a lot on the website to see what types of vitamins I should consider, but wouldn't it be better to know in advance and then choose supplements? Can this be done by a blood test or some other method? Or is this completely trial and error.

I have a doctors appointment tomorrow and wanted to discuss this with the doctor. I just want to be prepared to explain to him what I'm looking for or what type of test I could do.

Ask for B12, MMA, Folic Acid, Ferritin, Vit D along with the standard CBC. This is a good start and he should feel comfortable with ordering these. Also ask for a full Thyroid panel while you are at it: FREE T4, FREE T3, TSH and both antibodies.

My doctor ordered more "alternative" testing to check vitamin and mineral levels in blood and the intracellular levels.

I was extremely low in vitamin A as well as D, folic acid, b12 and iron. So don't forget about A. It's a common deficiency in celiac.

Believe it or not - my doctor was on top of things. He reminded me I had had a hysterectomy 6 weeks ago and my body was still healing and would take a while to be "normal." The dude also reminded me I wasn't 21 years old, the nerve of him (I told him so too)....

Anyway, all my blood work was okay six weeks ago prior to surgery and he felt like dealing with celiac and surgery was the real reasons why I'm not 100% - can't say I disagree. My villa was damaged pretty bad prior to diagnosis. I'm looking a little closer to what vitamins I am taking and considering adding a few.

I go back in a month and if I'm not feeling noticably better I will insist on more test.

Thanks all yet again for some good advice.

Jennifer

Test results came back for everything that was tested now. Cholesterol is off the charts high. Not sure if that’s related to celiac, I have no idea how it could be so high. Also tested positive for H pylori  infection… is there a link to celiac and H pylori? Or am I just experiencing symptoms of the H pylori infection?

I’m reading that some sites list a high Immunoglobulin A result for my age above 300, another site says above 356, and other sites are saying above 400. I don’t know what to make of this result 🤷‍♂️

You got some bum steers my friend. I have little confidence that you can trust your test results as differentiating between NCGS and celiac disease. And I think you would be much more likely to have gotten that note you need if you had been diagnosed with celiac disease. But believe me, I understand the predicament you are in with regard to the risks of repeating the gluten challenge. We have heard this story many times on this forum. People experiment with the gluten free diet before getting an official diagnosis and then cannot tolerate the gluten challenge later on when they seek an official diagnosis.

For the upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, they said 7 days of gluten. So I did 8...fast food and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. For the earlier blood test, the younger doctor said I didn't have to. My immune system went down, I was in the bathroom a lot, and as my wife said my brain wasn't braining.
