Celiac Belly Part 2: What Kind Of Jeans Do You Wear?

Even when I don' t have the celiac belly, my stomach still gets bigger all day long. It's an entire size smaller when I wake up in the morning. As a result, my jeans seem to stretch out a lot between washings, and then they don't hold in the tummy as well. I can't be the only one with this problem. I have no idea what jeans look good on me. I either have way too much fabric, or they are tight in the wrong places. Any advice?

I am a big fan of Ann Taylor. They work for me.

I was so happy when low waisted jeans came into style. I couldn't handle anything tight around my waist. This way my waist can do what it wants in terms of expanding and contracting and the jeans still fit. Just be sure to have a long loose top.

Joe's Jeans. They're amazing. They have just enough give, and they don't over stretch. When I wash and dry them, they shrink back up, too. They're a bit on the pricey side, so I usually buy mine at Nordstrom Rack, where they can usually be found on sale for $100 a pair, as opposed to their higher retail prices. I've heard they can be found at TJ Maxx, too.

I'd probably avoid Express or True Religion, as both brands stretch out a LOT. Express employees usually tell their clients to go down a size, as it will stretch. I've found this to be mostly true, with the exception of one pair of skinnies I bought last summer. I gained a bit of weight over the summer, and all my other jeans stretched to accommodate, but this pair just won't budge. They're uncomfortable, so I don't ever wear them enough to break them in. It was kind of strange, as every other pair I've had from them has gotten bigger with time.

Also, True Religions have crazy stretch. They start off one size in the morning, and by the end of the day, they're at least a size too loose. I've found that over time though, this has evened out a bit and they stay closer to their original size... no idea why.

Seven's are probably another good brand to try. I love mine to death. As with the Joe's, they do have some give, but they don't over stretch. They're very comfortable and never end up looking baggy. I work at Nordstrom, and the people I work with generally recommend going with the snugger size for this brand because over time they'll break in.

Erg. I sound like a jean snob.... and I suppose that's probably true.

Not Your Daughter's Jeans. They have a tummy panel hidden inside, are soft and comfortable, and truly make you look a size smaller.

Not cheap, but worth it ;)

Its all about low waisted and stretch. I wear Lucky's and some Old Navy jeans. I have a hard time cause I'm short with relatively thin legs but I have a booty. Most designer jeans aren't made for my body type. I do wear jeans that are a tad bit loose and then wear a belt cause then I can adjust as the day goes on.

Im with elonwy...low waste and stretch. Perfect. Im short too. I like the slight flare leg. It is flattering on me.

Citizens Of Humanity Jeans too. I found a miracle pair--dark wash, super long, perfect fit--at the Nordstrom 1/2 yearly sale for 50% off. They have just enough give, don't stretch thru the day, no muffin top and they're sooo soft!

I wear mid rise (2-3" below my navel) and any jeans with spandex (stretch). After years of trying to fit the 'tummy' and having jeans that bagged in the legs (esp. the hips and thighs because I have straight hips and 'no saddlebags'), I found Express's Mia style jeans. They fit snug in the hips and thighs. Those jeans are supposed to be 'high waist', but they fit me like a mid rise. However I also altered all my old baggy (in the hips and thighs) jeans to make them skinny jeans. I'm glad I can use a sewing machine and serger to make my old jeans fit even better than new.

Citizens are by the same designers that started Seven, so people who like one brand tend to like the other brand, too. Sales are the best time to get designers, though, for sure. Even though I get a discount, I still wait until what I want is on sale or at the Rack... it's just not worth it to pay *that much* for jeans!

elonwy, I beg to differ... I've seen all kinds/shapes of people fit into the designer stuff. Most designer jeans are made too long to begin with, but the point is so that they can be hemmed to the right length as needed. I'm tall and thin and *still* need to have most of my jeans hemmed up, haha. I'm no expert (I work in a department that doesn't sell jeans), but I've seen a lot of different body types fitted successfully. I know at least at Nordy's, they do the hems for free, and other alterations for a fee. If you can find a good salesperson to help, they can generally find stuff that will work with your own body type.

Frankly, I hated Old Navy jeans. They stretched out on me too much. I remember buying 3 or so pairs a couple winters ago, since they were about $30 a pair. 6 months later, I tossed them all out because they hard warped and stretched so much that they fabric was puckered and baggy. I haven't tried them since then. I feel like the designers I've bought really have held up a lot longer.

I have to use a belt. I have no butt left and if the jeans slip below the gut line, they will be around my ankles in now time.

@DebJ14, Yes, Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of all the essential vitamins and minerals, not just thiamine.  All the B vitamins work together and many minerals are needed as well.  If one is missing, the rest can't work well without it.  Thiamine is used at the beginning of the energy production cycle and interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the process.   Mitochondrial health depends upon thiamine.  Without thiamine, mitochondria can't produce energy, ATP, needed for cells to function.  They sicken and die.  Mitochondrial dysfunction is said to be the basis of illness.    Interesting Reading: Practical supplements for prevention and management of migraine attacks: a narrative review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11557489/ The importance of thiamine (vitamin B1) in humans https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10568373/

I was tested for nutrient deficiencies and Thiamine was not my problem.    The doctor uses the Spectracell Test for Micronutrient Deficiencies.  I was deficient in Carnitine, Magnesium, multiple antioxidants, D, Selenium, B12, B6 and a long list, just not Thiamine.

I forgot to mention that exercise also triggers it, except for the period right before I tried the gluten challenge where I could do moderately intense workouts without getting this burning sensation and extreme fatigue for days afterwards.

Hello everyone, I am 30 years old, female, and have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and suspected celiac disease (wasn't able to complete a gluten challenge, but have the symptoms and HLA-DQ8) or at least some kind of gluten sensitivity. When I first got diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, I went on AIP and never reintroduced gluten. Whenever I would eat a little bit of gluten I would wake up feeling very old, achy, and unrested, with a burning sensation everywhere especially on my hip bones and chest area. It felt like severe inflammation. This would also happen during stressful times and times where I hadn't been sleeping well.  This symptom had decreased in intensity and completely gone away before I tried to do a gluten challenge over a month ago. Now it is back and I have it every day when I wake up. It usually goes away or decreases in intensity after a few hours of being awake. Is this inflammation or something else, and is it related to Hashimoto's thyroiditis or celiac (or gluten sensitivity) or both? Could it be related to not moving for long periods of time (as is the case when I am sleeping)? I was also extremely sensitive to all foods when I first started AIP about 3 or 4 years ago, but with time, I could tolerate more foods and even gluten in small amounts occasionally. Now my stomach is super sensitive, I am afraid to eat again, and my stools are abnormal. Thank you.

@MagsM Did your doctor do the DGP IgG and DGP IgA tests or the tTg IgG test.  It looks like he just tested total IgG.   Were you taking any medications or over the counter stuff before the test?  Some can suppress the immune system and cause false negatives.
