Extracts?

Hi there! I know this has probably been discussed so much, and I did find some of it on a search, but I'm new to all of this and was hoping you could help.

Extracts (pure vanilla, almond, etc. -- no colorings)? I mostly use Watkins extracts and thankfully a lot of Watkins products are gluten-free but the extracts (except the peanut butter flavor) aren't on their list. I contacted them and here is what I got:

"Alcohol in Extracts

The alcohol in our extracts is primarily derived from corn. However, it cannot be guaranteed that there is no wheat in the fields of corn. For that reason, we do not include alcohol-containing products on the gluten free list. Also, most of the alcohol evaporates when products are cooked or baked."

What do you think?? I sell Watkins so it's the main brand we use in our home for pretty much anything. I'll hate it if I can't use it anymore!! But I know we have to do what it takes to keep my dh healthy (and possibly my daughters).

I also found this and was wondering what you thought of it:

Thank you for your help! :)

Rather than considering the source of the alcohol in extracts, consider whether you might have an allergy to vanilla. If you had long undiagnosed celiac disease, you may have developed other allergies through your 'leaky gut'. After testing for many different foods, my naturopath finally gave me an allergy (ELISA Blood) test for herbs and spices. My antibody test reaction to vanilla ran off their results chart. I'm also allergic to nutmeg. Rather than assuming every symptom is related to gluten intolerance, I'd recommend you get a blood test to check for other food allergies.

Thank you for that, we'll consider it! My husband is the one who was just diagnosed, and he has no symptoms. His liver enzymes have been elevated for a few years and his father was Dx with celiac a few months ago. My husband got tested and came back positive for it. I don't think any other food allergies are a problem, but we'll keep it in mind.

Anyone else have ideas on this? Maybe I should post this on the cooking forum? Thank you! :)

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give them some chemical stability for shelf life.

Thank you so much! I will look for that.

@llisa, back then when you tried magnesium and it upset your tummy, I'm guessing you were using the most common form of magnesium found on store shelves, namely, magnesium oxide. It has a reputation for having a laxative effect. It is not very well absorbed and so draws a lot of water into the colon, just like the laxative known as milk of magnesia. I'm guessing if you would switch to the "glycinate" form of magnesium you would not have this problem. Magnesium glycinate is absorbed much better. If you can't find magnesium glycinate at your local stores, you can order gluten free brands of it off of Amazon.

I've tried magnesium before. Twice in 2 years. It really upset my stomach. And that was before this celiac disease diagnosis. (Finally, after 2 years of trying to find out what was wrong with me.) I have no idea how sensitive I am. When my stomach was upset, I'd go to my comfort foods: cream of wheat, cheese and crackers, scrambled eggs and toast...so, making myself worse by trying to feel better.  Just got results of biopsy yesterday, so today is first day of trying no gluten and reading that it can be hiding in vitamins and meds. So, I welcome ALL advice and personal experiences. No advice is too basic. I know nothing. Thank you!

Have you considered also supplementing with magnesium and zinc? We usually recommend these two as well. D3, Calcium and Magnesium all important for bone and nerve health.
