Expired Baking Mixes

Cherry Tart

Recommended Posts

Cherry Tart Apprentice

Hello All!

I was recently going through my cupboard when I noticed that I had several baking mixes that had expired (remnants of my early gluten-free hoarding days). Is it OK to use mixes that have expired? I just assumed that since they were in sealed packaging that they would still be OK. I'm not a baking guru, so any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

It depends... If there is brown rice flour or other whole grain flours, they can go rancid. A quick whif should tell you if this has happened. White rice and other starches don't usually spoil too fast. The other factor is baking powder or baking soda. These do go flat and won't make your baked goods rise. In this case they won't taste bad or hurt you, but they'll be flat.

Thanks for the info Liz! ;)

@CeliacPsycho246, You might try cutting out dairy.  Some of us react to Casein, the protein in dairy, the same as to gluten.

Yep, the edit window times out very quickly. It's okay. I got a good laugh out of it.

I wrote that by mistake and there is no where I can edit this.

I hope you meant "pen pal" instead of "paypal".

Hi, I would be open to having a paypal. I am celiac as well. And am struggling with all symtoms.
