Making My Own Oat Flour?

DMarie

If I have gluten-free oats (rolled) - and I give them a whirl in my food processor - will I have oat flour? I have not found gluten-free oat flour anywhere and shipping is too expensive.

Any suggestions?

Also, does Quinoa flour exist (already packaged)? Or would I need to put that through a coffee grinder or some other process to get that type flour?

Is sorghum related to corn? If so and if corn is an intolerance, would that automatically make sorghum one as well?

Last, but not least - what is millet related to?

Thanks!

I have made recipes that call for small amounts of oat flour in addition to other flours. I whir the oats in the food processor and it works fine. If a few grains end up a little larger than flour, no big deal, at least in the bread that I make. I have also done this to relace the flax seed meal in my bread recipe.

Corn and Sorghum are both grains so yes they are related, but that doesn't necessarily mean you will react to both. I react to corn but not sorghum.

Thanks for the info on sorghum Janessa! :P

Fingers faster than the brain! I posted before I was ready. I recently purchased a Cuisinart food processor (it was on a fantastic sale!!). It is my best friend in the kitchen! :D I will give the oats a whirl as you suggest, Missy'sMom.

Hmmm...wondering if I could also make my own almond meal flour? How much is too much for a food processor? Guess I should get out the manual and look at the recipes. If it shows how to make peanut butter, then I would think I could use almonds as well.

I don't use almond meal in great quantity and this may not be the most economical way, but I have processed the thin slivered almonds in the processor. Not as hard on the machine.

I'm pretty sure that the quinoa flour that I have (I transfer them into containers) was from Bob's Red Mill. If the store that you purchase some of your other gluten-free stuff has Bob's Red Mill products already just ask if they could also bring in the quinoa flour.

Oh, @Yaya! Five years???  How awful for you to suffer so long! My Vitamin D came up in a matter of months.  High dose Vitamin D has been used in the past to correct rickets and is a safe method to correct Vitamin D deficiency.   I took 1000 IU several times a day, every day for several weeks.  I ate them like m&m's when I was severely deficient.  My brain craved them.  I felt so much better afterwards.  On maintenance dose now.  Yes, the craving went away as my level reached 80-95.   Ask your cardiologist about supplementing with.Benfotiamine.

@CeliacPsycho246, My OCD symptoms resolved after I took supplements of the active form of Pyridoxine B6 called P5P and L-Theanine, an amino acid.   Pyridoxine B6 is absorbed from foods or supplements and then must be changed to its active form.  P5P is the active form.  Inflammation and malabsorption can impede this process.  Taking the active form is beneficial because it is ready to be used immediately.   L-Theanine is a natural amino acid that helps immensely with anxiety.   Together these two supplements really work to relieve OCD. I like Life Extension brand of P5P, but there are others that are labeled gluten free, too.  L-Theanine is found in chocolate, but as much as I love chocolate, Theanine  supplements work better.   Hope you are open to trying these as a stop-gap until your doctor's appointment.  Keep us posted on your results.

You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

One positive blood test result means you likely have celiac disease, but to confirm it they may want to do an endoscopy to verify it with biopsies. Unless you have severe symptoms now, you likely should continue eating gluten daily until all testing is completed, and should eat tons of gluten daily in the 2 weeks before an endoscopy.
