Ideas On Where She Got Glutened?

HI!

OUr dd is now 2 and is in the midst of a bad bad gluten reaction. Horrible runny poop. We've done great with just a few instances in the beginning since our dx (or lack of one ) in Jan. But this is definitely like she was way back before dx leading me to believe we are getting regular gluten somewhere in the last month but I can't figure out where. HEr bigger than big belly has even rounded back out after it just started to finally flatten.

I've gone over and over our foods and diet for the last 3 weeks and can't figure out anything. She had Hawolleen candy but it was lollipops ( assumed they were all safe so one of those might have been a problem) and candy we knew were safe. Shampoos and conditioners are all by Sauve the ones for kids. Toothpaste is ORal B for toddlers. Vitamins are safe and verified.

Kitchen is gluten free except for hubby's sandwhich he makes for lunch. I clean that area he uses and throw the towel in the laundry so I don't spread the crumbs. Then I still reclean with a new cloth to be safe. Sandwich fixing are all squeezable bottles and I clean the tops and squirt out some first to make sure no cc from his bread. That's the only gluten I know of in the house and she has no access to it. we have our own gluten-free peanut butter bottle.

She only goes out of my sight to one class on Wednesdays and they are very up and up on allergies and are very sure to keep her from all gluten. Only 3 kids on a busy day in the class so I'm not too worried about the kids being able to swap foods or cc her.

I can not think of anything that we have switched to in the last month. Everything we have is what we have been doing unless ingredidents were switched in a product and I don't know about it. OH I did switch from Bryan's hot dogs to Bar s but bar s was verified to be gluten free. Maybe that wasn't true??

The only other thing we did in the last month was take care of the neighbor's kitten who only ate canned cat food (pop top) 9 lives I believe. She had a good time with the kitten but I never saw the kitten licking her or anything like that. She did mess with the litter box a few times and I had to wash her well from that. Could gluten be in cat litter? It was very dusty and I know I sucked in tons of it when cleaning the cat box. THe kitten did seem to have a stomache bug but no one else in the house has tummy issues so I am not leaning toward virus.

Can anyone think of anything I'm forgetting?? I know once you get everythign under control you begin to forget about things. Could I be missing something? OR can bar s hot dogs be a problem?

Thanks

Stacie

Forgot to add we are also dairy free and only use Almond milk by blue diamond. I'm pretty sure they have no gluten. We do an occasional cheese pizza since soy makes her sicker than the milk does but that is rare and any issues from that is a one time deal. Not ongoing like this has been.

Has your DD been checked for Almond allergy since she is consuming so much of it or Cat, eviromental factors? I am not aware of the hot dog brand Bar. I bought a brand at Whole Food, they are called Wilshire Farm, they also make Organic Turkey Strips that replace bacon in our house.

There are other brands with wheat as well:

She was checked for tree nuts and peanuts. All clear. Is almond a different test?

Were any of the lollipops she eat Dum-Dums? I believe they contain dairy.

I don't know if it is a seperate test. My son had an individual test just for cashew, almond, and walnut. Almonds were worst of all in our case. Befor the test I thought I was doing something wonderful and healthy by giving him Almond Milk instead of cows milk. Poor kid had stomach ache every morning in school, many times sent home from vomitting. Back then he was eating wheat cereal with the almond milk which is another one of his allergies.

(sorry spell check not working)

Here is what I would check out further.

1. cat food.

2. Bar S Q: Do Bar-S products contain gluten? A: Bar-S products are gluten free with the exception of Bar-S Corn Dogs and Chuck Wagon brand franks. The source of modified food starch in Bar-S products is from corn.

3. Halloween candy. Do you know all of the brands and types?

Does the class know about stickers, play-doh, finger paint as gluten sources?

Dilettantesteph,

Wow thats a good point. My chid is allergic to wheat. Test for Celiac were negative. Can Play doh and paint give a reaction?

Just fingerpaint.

The class knows about the glue and paint and playdough. However, we have been using those stickable foamies. Peel the sticker off and stick it. Hadn't even thought about that. I'll have to see what the "sticky" is made from.

As for playdough, mine absolutely cannot under any reason even be in the same room with it (or so it seems) If you have a wheat allergy, will you not react to playdough??? If it is used in the room and everything is not scrubbed to death, she gets sick. It took a long time to figure that one out. Once we eradicated playdough, she stopped getting sick. ONe dr still claims she has a wheat allergy and not Celiac so I was wondering if as an allergy she wouldn't respond to the playdough thus her response is not allergy? Clear as mud right?

Thanks

Playdoh is made with wheat flour, so both allergic and Celiac children shouldn't play with it. And if it's of any consolation....my daughter also cannot be in a room where other kids are playing with Playdoh. For some reason, the teacher had to be convinced of that (she was warned at the beginning of the school year). Wasn't she surprised when I made a call into the school asking what my dd had been exposed to to make her so ill...on the very same day the teacher allowed the other kids to play with Playdoh? She was stunned to say the least.

On the one day your daughter is with the other kids, you may want to talk to the teacher about having everyone wash their hands first thing (before playing with anything in the room). Also, double check what kind of soap is in the room for them to use. The soap at my dd's pre-school was NOT safe for her and it also was a problem that the other kids were using it and spreading it around. I ended up supplying a safe soap for the class as well as a separate soap dispenser for my dd.

Do the kids get snacks or drinks in the room? If so, be sure that whoever gives your dd food also washes their hands (with a safe soap) immediately before serving her. Do they work on art projects? What products are used? Is there a sensory center (sometimes these have pasta noodles in them for kids to play with)? Is there chalk in the room? Are they using food to make certain crafts/projects? .....Also, I should add that I had brought two tubs of the Crayola modeling clay in for my dd's class to use...which is supposed to be gluten-free. Well, ours was definitely cross-contaminated. I ended up making my own gluten-free playdoh for the class to use AND you need to remind the teacher that all the cutting tools and shapemakers need to be thoroughly cleaned before being used with the gluten-free playdoh.

Also, you may want to check into the cleaning schedule where your dd is at. It is important that the room be cleaned prior to her going. Leftover crumbs on tables and carpets as well as gluten residue can wreak havoc with a child that is very sensitive. My dd is super-sensitive. You may even have to look at what the kids are drying their hands with after they wash them. Cloth or paper?

Okay the soap stuff totally mystifies me. What are the bad ingredients? I look at the bottle and nothing screams wheat. I didn't think about using the soap at places. SHe still likes to lick her hands.

So some of those chemical names are code words for wheat?

Here at home we are suave for kids shampoo (I thought Sauve was safe), equate brand hand soap, and switched yesterday to Kiss my Face olive and aloe soap for her really bad dry skin and cucumber body lotion by pure life. Those were the only ones I could find that had ingredients I could pronounce and that claimed to be all natural. I'm trying them out on myself first before I put any on her. Her dry skin is horrendous right now.

So what's the crash course on soaps and lotions?? I've been just using what I knew others had used and really have no idea how to make sense of the labels on those products. We just rinse really really well.

*Most* soaps are gluten-free unless you're talking specialty soaps like Bath and Body Works, but many soaps do contain soy. I believe shayesmom's daughter is also soy intolerant. Any suave product I've checked is safe. And I think equate, too.

Stacie,

You mentioned that your family drinks Almond milk by Blue Diamond....., But it has "soy lecithin" and 'natural flavors' in it's ingredients. You mentioned that 'soy' makes her sick. Soy gives me hives, anaphylatic reactions and diarrhea!!! Just this week I tried the very Almond milk you mentioned (thinking that the soy lecithin wouldn't bother me...) ....But boy..... did it ever bother me! For me, soy is soy in ANY form! I would bet that it's the soy lecithin ingredient! I hope this helps!!!!!

Worriedtodeath Enthusiast

never even saw that!!!!! That may explain some things. Soy cheese and heavy soy products upset her stomach but i never paid attention to the almond milk ingredients for soy.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Stacie

Russ, can you link an article supporting your assertion that small amounts of gliadin are detectable in human breast milk? Not doubting you but it would be nice to have the whole text for reference.

Got it. Thanks Scott. I'll set up an appointment with a GI after the holidays and get all the celiac disease screening done. Thanks to this amazing forum and to all who have answered my question, I now know what my next steps are.

Aah it sucks that there's no definitive way to confirm NCGS or celiac. I've found a GI clinic that is covered by my insurance and I'll contact them after the holidays to setup an appointment. I hope to get some sort of clarity with further tests.

Thanks @knitty kitty. I didn't know about thiamine deficiency before you had mentioned it. I'm doing more research into what it is and how I can test for that deficiency. Is Vitamin B1 test the best way to find it? I saw that there is another test: Erythrocyte transketolase activity coefficient (ETKAC) assay to test for thiamine deficiency but I'm not sure how that test is done. Is that something I can take on my own or do I need GI referral. If it does turn out that I'm thiamine deficient, does that confirm that I have celiac disease or could it just mean that I have not been consuming Vitamin B1 rich food and once I address that with a supplement or food, I would no longer be thiamine deficient? Also full disclosure, I'm a vegetarian and only last year I found out that my Vitamin D level was very low. It was 3.7 ng/ml and the ideal range is >29.9 ng/ml. After a year of taking multivitamin supplement, my Vitamin D level has gone up to 27 ng/ml. Though it's better than 3.7 ng/ml, it's still below the range. I'm not sure for how long my Vitamin D level was around 3.7 ng/ml before 2023 as I didn't have my Vitamin D test taken prior to that. My doctor also wanted to check my Vitamin B12 level as I might not be getting enough of it from vegetarian sources. When I took that test last year, Vitamin B12 was 247 pg/ml and ideal range is 200-1100 pg/ml. So it's still within the range though it's on the lower end of the ideal range. I also have recently started taking vitamin b-complex tablets daily. I've never checked other Vitamin B levels including Vitamin B1. Do you know if such a very low level of Vitamin D and moderately lower level of Vitamin B12 would cause celiac disease or may contribute to some of the symptoms I've been experiencing? Regarding the DNA test to test celiac genes, are you referring to HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8 tests? As soon as I got the result where my IgG was above range, I had ordered the "HLA Typing for Celiac Disease" test in Quest Diagnostics which measures HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8. The test is 2 weeks from now and I'll post my results here once I receive them.
