Uk Celiacs - How To Find An Informed Gp

My GP isn't bad exactly, but the UK posters here have reinforced my suspicion that it's hard to find out what you are entitled to over here. I feel, like others, that I've been fobbed off for years by ill-informed doctors, or worse, ones that simply knew the exact allowances of their budget. Does it even work like that? I'm guessing it does, because my blood test was by a locum, after years of really OBVIOUS signals being ignored.

I've moved back to my home town after uni and moving around a bit, and without really considering it, signed up with the doctors I'd had all my life. But is there a way of finding out whether some doctors have particular specialist knowledge over others, so I can change surgeries and get a really informed doctor?

I know that past a certain point it's all about your consultants and specialists etc. but for me right now, I want someone who is willing to actually refer me to them. And also to refer me to specialists in relevant related problems, like fertility experts etc. I'm feeling really disturbed because I've had such an obvious collection of symptoms for years, and nobody told me I might end up infertile as a result of this.

Do GP's specialise in this way? and how do you find out?

BTW. I live in East Sussex. Anyone else? I'm pretty new to all this.

Unfortunately you never really know just what your gp is like until you're on his books

Although we are lucky to have the NHS in the UK - so it is our right to have access to one you tend to get what you are given <_<

You can of course attempt to change gp's if you don't like the one you've got BUT you tend to find that the good ones can't take any new patients as their books are full.

You could try posting the same question on this Open Original Shared Link- maybe someone might be able to recommend a coeliac friendly gp?

Thanks, you're right. I suppose in big surgeries, at least you can find out a little bit about each doctor, and try different one out. I'm trying to make an appointment with a different one regarding a celiac related issue, although I know he has also missed my symptoms for years! Now I just want to be referred to the right specialists. At this point, persistence and patience are necessary....

Welcome to the forum, @Connie Smitj! Can you give us a little more history about your celiac journey? How long ago were you diagnosed and how long have your been gluten free? Do you have other symptoms besides quick onset of hunger after eating and gut pain? How long have these symptoms being happening?
    • Connie Smitj
I eat a gluten-free diet but hunger pains start within an hour of eating dinner. I  had h pylori infection before I was diagnosed. Occasionally I’ll have bouts of pain. Could it come back or is it just celiac disease?

Scott, am I missing something? For the TTG-IGA normal is anything 3 or less and his score less than 2. I think that one is in normal range. @Brown42186, if the GI doc is not interested in doing an endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining based on the elevated TTG-IGG I would request a repeat on the bloodwork now that you have resumed gluten consumption again.

Interesting for sure. Have you heard of potential cross reactivity to casein (dairy), corn, milket, iats, rice, and yeast?
    • Brown42186
Thanks for all the info! I'll see how my appointment next week goes. I think I'm going to push for having a blood test done again since I've been consistently eating gluten and go from there.
