Dental Problem

I just went to the dentist today (6 month cleaning) and my gums have deteriorated terribly in the last 6 months! I floss daily and this should not have happened... I read before about teeth being sensitive due to the gluten affecting the enamel, but what about gum disease? All the sudden I need all this gum work and possible gum surgery. What's up with that? Anyone know if the gum stuff relates?

I do not have malabsorption according the Entrolab. (that is after being gluten free for 4 months or so)

I would appreciate any input. Thanks, Amber

I'm so sorry about that! :(

DQ7 makes you susceptible to gum disease. Mine are sensitive (especially while I was pregnant), but thankfully I haven't had such extensive problems.

You mean my subtype 7 ? Where did you find that out? I want to read about it. Thanks, let me know if you can. Amber

Hi Amber,

Yes, I was referring to the subtype DQ7 (*0301). Here's what Wikipedia says...

I did a quick search for other sources of information, but it looks like there hasn't been much research on the genetics of periodontal disease. However... some things that are associated with DQ7 (diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, bacterial overgrowth) can be underlying causes:

Sorry I don't have more than that! There are just so many mysteries when it comes to autoimmune disorders, inflammation, and bacteria. :(

:o I too have the tooth problems and gums are all messing up. But I am B-12 and Vtamin D Anemia requiring injections and RX Vitamins instead of regular over the counter vitamins.

I am in the process of getting them pulled and getting dentures. My mouth is ruined because of this disease if it is what I have. That is another reason my doctor tested me and is positive I have Celiac.

At first after seeing several doctors over and over again because of nerve damage but I had other things happening too. Several doctors have been stumped with me. The last doctor I see is the gastrologist and here now we think we now have my problem solved. Just waiting on the test and endoscopy. I certainly think Celiac is the cause! I don't know of what else it could be. I have always taken care of my teeth but something destroyed them. Now I am spending time getting them pulled and looking forward to having a new mouth. Nice meeting you!

You'll find that a lot of us have dental problems. With me, my gums are just fine. Very healthy. And yet I've lost a number of teeth because they broke off below the gum line. I once had a dentist tell me that I was losing enamal on my teeth because I brushed too much! Now I know that my body was robbing my teeth and bones for the calcium it desperately needed because I wasn't absorbing it. I'm sure that I will be looking at dentures one day....sad thought.

Hey! There is an autoimmune disease of the teeth and gums that often comes with Celiac (read it in a book). I don't remember what it's called but it basically is rapid tooth and gum decay leading to cavities. Sometimes though, all it does is cause blackish streaks across your teeth. depends on severity. Your dentist may not be aware of this problem and might be labelling cavities that arent really there! We spent thousands on my "cavities" and the latest dentist i have told me that most of the minor fillings were probably unnecessary cuz i have this disease!

Yes! I have had dental problems my entire life. In the past couple of years, I've been dealing with gum recession. I have better dental hygeine than anyone I know, I use a Sonicare, etc. My dentist swears I must be brushing way too hard, lol, but I know that is not it. I'm sure I'll be having surgery in the next few years, I already have cold/hot sensitivity because of the recession. It's mild right now, but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to stop its progression. I'm only in my 30's....I feel way too young to have so many dental issues.

Thanks for the responses all of you. I am a bit depressed with all of this, but I am on a mission to do what I need to. They have me set up for 5 appointments, all 2 weeks apart to do deep scailing and then decide if I need gum surgery. I kept telling them I had sensitivity for the last 2 years and they couldn't find anything wrong other than the gums which were not that bad until the last 6 months. I have always taken care and flossed too. Just one more thing to deal with.

Thanks for all your help.

I've been studying Ayurveda lately with some success in tweaking my diet for my dosha (Pitta dominant). I am now trying "Oil Pulling" for my teeth and gums. Google it. I will let ya'll know how it goes. I just started.

I read a book on that several years ago. It has beautiful pictures of the oil combinations. I really wanted to get into it more but could not afford to buy the oils at the time. I find it very interesting though. I'll google it. Let me know how it goes.

You dont need expensive oil. Just cold pressed refined sesame or sunflower. Sunflower is the cheapest. Many use virgin coconut oil too. That is what I am using till my order of Sunflower comes in.

I just got done reading on several sites about it and wow, sounds great. My five dental appointments for this don't start till Feb. 9 so I have time to give this a try. It is the least envasive detox I have ever heard of. Love it! Are you using the sunflower because its cheaper than the coconut? I read the coconut is better tasting. Could I get the cold pressed probably at the health food store? I'll be anxious to see if it helps alot of things. Thanks!

Are you sure that you don't have Sjogren's syndrome? Look it up .Lots of Celiacs get that autoimmune condition also.I found out about it on this site AND I tested positive for it,plus my Celiac too.It can make the gums messed up and the teeth drop out.A blood test then an antibody test can tell if you have it.You'd also get dry eyes,I was diagnosed with that too,and dry skin and even a dry internal organs. You have to brush with Biotene toothpaste right after you eat,and eat sugarfree gum with xylitol. You just have to be real careful with this condition. Do you think you have Sjogren's Syndrome?

I looked it up and although I have very dry eyes, I have no other symptoms. I have plenty of saliva and don't have dried mucus in my eyes upon waking. Do not have a hard time swallowing, etc. I don't think thats it. But, thanks.

Hello,   The medication in these inhalers can cause a thiamine deficiency if used by someone already low in thiamine.  We don't absorb sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals due to the inflammation and damage done to our villi in Celiac Disease.  Even a long term strict gluten free diet may not provide sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals.  There are eight B vitamins that all work together.  Thiamine deficiency often shows up first because our bodies use so much of it and it can't be stored very long. Thiamine deficiency symptoms can appear in as little as three days.  Without thiamine, the other B vitamins may not be able to function properly.   Thiamine is needed to clear lactic acid accumulation caused by the inhalers: Shoshin beriberi provoked by the inhalation of salbutamol https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12951730/    Significant Lactic Acidosis from Albuterol https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5965110/ Albuterol-Induced Type B Lactic Acidosis: Not an Uncommon Finding https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7263006/ Lessons of the month 1: Salbutamol induced lactic acidosis: clinically recognised but often forgotten https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6964186/ An Overview of Type B Lactic Acidosis Due to Thiamine (B1) Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10731935/   Thiamine has antifungal and antibacterial properties.  Thiamine helps keep Candida in check.  Thiamine helps keep SIBO in check.  Thiamine helps with black mold, Aspergillis infection.  Riboflavin helps fight Candida infection in the mouth. Riboflavin Targets the Cellular Metabolic and Ribosomal Pathways of Candida albicans In Vitro and Exhibits Efficacy against Oropharyngeal Candidiasis https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36625571/   Thiamine deficiency can make ones voice hoarse and can cause localized edema.  Niacin deficiency can make ones voice hoarse.  (Niacin deficiency and Thiamine deficiency can each cause irritability, agitation, and lability.) Hoarseness in pellagra https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21507655/ Hidden Hunger: A Pellagra Case Report https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8152714/   Anesthesia can cause B12 deficiency.  B12 deficiency can show up as mouth sores and geographic tongue, diarrhea, and dementia. Vitamin deficiency, a neglected risk factor for post-anesthesia complications: a systematic review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11823251/ Neurologic degeneration associated with nitrous oxide anesthesia in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8250714/ Subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord following nitrous oxide anesthesia: A systematic review of cases https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30144777/ The Effect of Vitamin B12 Infusion on Prevention of Nitrous Oxide-induced Homocysteine Increase: A Double-blind Randomized Controlled Trial https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4052402/     Eating a diet that is heavy in carbohydrates can precipitate a thiamine deficiency.  As the amount of carbohydrates consumed increases, additional thiamine is needed, otherwise the carbs will be stored as fat.   Thiamine deficiency disorders: a clinical perspective https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8451766/   Hiding in Plain Sight: Modern Thiamine Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8533683/   The deficiency symptoms of some of the B vitamins cause gastrointestinal symptoms that resemble the same symptoms as when being glutened.   Thiamine deficiency can present as vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain (Gastrointestinal Beriberi).  Niacin deficiency can present as diarrhea (Pellagra = diarrhea, dermatitis, dementia, then death ).  B12 deficiency can present as diarrhea or dementia.  Not everything is caused by hidden gluten.  Gluten free processed foods are not required to be enriched with vitamins lost in processing like gluten containing foods are. Blood tests are not accurate measurements of vitamin levels, but do talk to your doctor and nutritionist about supplementing with the eight B vitamins, Vitamin C, the four fat soluble vitamins and minerals like magnesium.  Your physician can give you a shot of B12 before anesthesia administration.   By the way, Celiac Disease genes have been traced back to having originated in Neanderthals.  I'm not a singing teacher on the net.  I earned a degree in Microbiology after studying nutrition because I wanted to know what vitamins are doing inside the body.  I've experienced nutritional deficiencies myself. Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!

Welcome to the forum, @jnstefan! She should start feeling better within a week or two if she is truly avoiding gluten and if she isn't also showing intolerance to other foods. It is quite common for celiacs to be dairy intolerant (not just the lactose but the protein casein in dairy) and to oats (protein is avenin). Casein and avenin have structures similar to gluten. We call this cross reactivity (not to be confused with cross contamination). So, you might look at pulling these two food items from her diet to see if there is improvement. But achieving a gluten free state is more challenging than people realize when the first start in. It is hidden in so many foods you would never expect to find it in like soy sauce and canned tomato soup, just to site two examples. This might help:

My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Celiac 2 weeks ago. We've been on gluten free diet now for 2 weeks. She still experiences abdominal pain at times , and is struggling with fatigue. What is everyone's experience with how long it takes for the body to heal and stabilize after starting the gluten free diet? Thanks for any feedback!

thank you for the insight  Thank a small elevation can be due to this or is it more likely to be cross contamination ?
