Worst Gluten Reaction Ever And Scared

Hi,

I only post on here about once a year so I apologize for barging in again. :P I have been gluten free due to diagnosed celiac for 7 and a half years now and I made a MAJOR booboo last night. I thought I was buying the Amy's Rice Crust Spinach Pizza but I got the WHOLE WHEAT one instead and somehow never noticed while I was preparing it and eating it. I only had one piece, thank God. And I just want to say that I already feel really stupid and I am always so so careful. I still cant' believe I did this!

Anyways, 3-4 hours after eating it (I felt fine up till then) I got really dizzy and nauseated. I had the dry heaves (I'm assuming that means my stomach was empty) for about 40 minutes (not fun!) Then I drank some water (at this point I didn't know I had been glutenated so I thought it was something else) and took a Pepcid AC. And THEN I projectile vomited and it was all the pizza. I vomited continuously for about 10 minutes and then I had 3 more episodes of pizza puking (so throwing up from 11pm to 2am) and horrible horrible nausea and belly pain (right below my ribs in the middle) that I couldn't move.

Anyways, I know that the one time I threw up from gluten before was when I had gluten free bread contaminated with wheat flour so I think I get that type of reaction if it's wheat, not so much with barley. Usually I only get glutened from cross contamination and I just have some diarrhea and bloating.

The weird thing is that I haven't had any diarrhea which is different for me; I always have either just the D or D+V never just V. Do you think that is because I vomited it all up from my intestines? It felt like it got stuck (the pizza) as soon as it got out of my stomach and my poor duodenum recognized it. And my stomach was definitely empty to begin with (4 hours after I ate and having the dry heaves). Maybe all the gluten got thrown up and that's why I don't have diarrhea?

The other upsetting thing is that I cannot eat, but I am drinking Gatorade and staying hydrated. It feels (24 hours later) like someone is punching me in my solar plexus and like I have this ball of burning pain high up in my belly (it's in the middle and kind of between the ribs, so pretty high). I've never had this before and it's scaring me if I can't eat. Could my intestines be so inflamed that they're swollen and that's why I have the pain and can't eat. I am not even hungry and when I tried to eat some mushed up gluten-free pretzels (what I always eat after a gluten reaction since I get really lactose intolerant and can't have my usual comfort food) the pain got a lot worse and I felt nauseated.

I took some Levsyn, which is an anti-spasmodic that I take under my tongue and that seemed to help a bit but wears off as soon as the next dose is due. That was prescribed not for my celiac but because I have biliary tract issues but it did help.

I am sorry this was so rambling. I just don't have anyone to ask about this and I am scared. I think I will call my GI doctor tomorrow and try to talk to him and ask what to do. If anyone has had this happen or knows what medicines would help or any advice I would appreciate it!

Thank you!

Bre

Bre,

I'm sorry to hear that you're getting hit so hard by this! Keep the

Gatorade flowing, as you don't want an electrolyte imbalance! ~ And

definitely call/see your doctor! 24 hours is too long, - if you're still

vomiting tonight, call your doctor now, - the doctor should have an

answering service or have a way to page them.

Dry heaves come from a spasm of the stomach while the glottis

section (vocal cords and folds) of the throat are closed. Vomiting

("normal" or projectile) often includes contents from the duodenum.

The duodenum is where partially digested food is mixed with bile

and pancreatic enzymes for digestion in the next sections of the

small intestines; the duodenum is where iron and calcium are

absorbed. I wouldn't be as concerned about the duodenum being

a part of this, since that's not unusual, but would be concerned

that this has been going on for 24 hours. It sounds like you may

need a stronger antiemetic, prescribed by your doctor, to stop the

cycle that you're system seems to be stuck in. Please, call your

doctor as soon as possible.

Rumbles is probably right--see a Doc.

However if it was me (and it has happened) and you like a more home grown variety of health care, I would try taking some baking soda in water (1/2 to 1 teaspoon in a glass of water chased by more water). I would also take or make up some slippery elm (gruel or caps). Marshmallow root caps or powder mixed in cold water will also help. Both herbs are soothing and healing being anti inflammatory. Peppermint and chamomile tea are very soothing. Ditto with anise tea...

I would also take enterically coated acidophilus just to calm the system down.

I have found even just breathing in gluten dust my body gets inflammed all over. Probably the same thing happens even if it doesn't reach your gut directly--a huge reaction against food in this case...The baking soda should really help... It has done so for me whether I have had projectile vomiting or projectile D.

Meanwhile, continuing my down home approach, I would then take dandelion root and yellow dock when I could manage it....say a day later to get rid of residual inflammation and general liver toxicity. At that point too for me I take a tablespoon or two of Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar to help balance out the system...Raw Celery then is good too for balancing the system... Though for you you might need cooked veggies at first?? My ex uses a juice extractor.

I'm guessing the water helped you throw up, is what happened. Pizza can be a very dry food, and was probably just kind of stuck. If you're no longer throwing up, you don't have to worry so much about dehydration, especially if you're keeping down the gatorade. I would switch to broths at this point, start with veggie, then chicken. You'll get a lot more nutrients into your system, and all the sugar in Gatorade can't be doing you any favors.

You probably haven't had diarrhea YET. I know, positive thought. I don't think there's any way you got it all out, to be honest. Your stomach did kind of shut down for a while though, and it may also be that after all this time your system has changed and will react in different ways.

Yolo's suggestions are good, though it may be hard for you to find those herbs. The baking soda bit is very helpful and that's pretty easy access. Add some lime or lemon juice to your baking soda water and you basically have homemade Gatorade. And it tastes better!

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am not able to get out and find all these things and in all honesty probably wouldn't be able to prepare them all. But I DO have peppermint tea and I've drank that before and noticed it has tummy calming properties. I'll go make some now! Thanks again :)

I was glutened this x-mas by CC...it was just a turkey my brother had made and he placed on top of a baking sheet for carving (which of couse I didnt realize till after the fact) But I woke up really naucious in the middle of the night...I had a sinus infection, so I thought maybe it was from that... The next day I seemed ok...(I still didnt know that the turkey was CC) and I had the leftovers, which happened to be more of the meat from the bottom of the turkey...I woke up again, this time at like 5am with horrible nausea. I went the bathroom and started dry heaving....then I felt a big wad move from my stomach and down to my intestines. I was still dry heaving, but everytime I felt more and more like it was going to be D. I was so confused I was sitting on the toilet feeling like I was about to V and D at the same time. I ended up vomiting, but it was a bunch of green mucous, sry for the visual....then I started getting a horrible burning feeling just below my stomach...I sware it felt like a swallowed a turkey bone and it had torn my insides, making my intestines inflamed....that was my only thought...I was freakin out b/c I was home alone in the middle of no where. I continued to V mucous and was cold and sweating uncontrollable. I passed out on my bed wrapped in nothing but a blanket and then woke up nacious again. I just sipped water until it went away...then it was an entire day full of disgusting D....I didnt get over the nausea feeling for about 3 days after, but the D was only for one day (thank god)...But that was my worse glutening yet....I'm sure part of the reason it was so bad is a had an infection to begin with, but still. NO FUN!!! I was suprised b/c it was just a small amount, but I can only imagine eating whole wheat pizza

didnt mean to ramble, just thought I'd share....

Not rambling! I actually feel kind of encouraged knowing other people have similar reactions, weird as that may sound! My D started today, oh joy...

bremac Apprentice

The D started today as someone predicted it would :P Not too bad though and I've been eating a bit, mostly jello and broth and applesauce and peppermint tea. My GI doc told me to take some Pepto Bismol and that actually helped my tummy pain a lot. And hopefully help with the D too! He said something about how the ingredient in it can actually help bind up some of the gluten left over in the intestines and help get it out faster. ANyone ever heard that before? Anyways, thanks for your replies everyone!

Pepto Bismol has helped me in a pinch, however it seems I am allergic to the salycic acid (sp?) (asperin) so my stool turns black--my chiro says that indicates internal bleeding.... So there are alternatives--kaopectate though I haven't used it as of yet. The alternative remedies do work for me. Glad the peppermint tea is helping by the way!

Bea

PS--I may have gotten glutened from kissing my boyfriend yesterday or drinking bottled water he poured for me after cleaning off the coffee shop table today... I need to train him to be a little less polite (lol!!). Am feeling a bit off tonight, headache with achy eyes and backache starting plus tired--which isn't how I normally feel these days unless glutened. Just am crossing my fingers it doesn't get worse than this. Am going to try my own remedies. Already did the baking soda, enzymes, yogurt and acidophilus. Vinegar next... and then the herbs.

PPS--happy new year anyway! Am going to watch a star trek movie with my family... Life for me anyway is getting overall better all the time despite these occasional glitches. Hope it is for you all too!

Hmm, are you allergic to Aspirin? IF you are I would think you would be allergic to the Pepto as well, but otherwise, it is SUPPOSED to make your stools dark. It even says so on the bottle and that is a temporary and expected thing. If you're not on a med that has this side effect and your stools are black/really dark that IS a sign of GI bleeding high up in the tract (it's called melena.) I was freaked out when mine became black and then I read the bottle and noticed that, hehe. I wouldn't want you to miss out on the joys of Pepto Bismol if you don't have to. ;) Happy New Year!

I am allergic to asperin. Thanks for reminding me about what it says on the side of the bottle however. I think if I had to have it I would take it in an emergency if that's all there was, just not taken very often...but kaopectate would probably be better.

Meanwhile I use marshmallow root to soothe and heal the villi...though it doesn't stop the D. But blackberry leaves and bark do (which I have outside).

Other herbs stop the D too...American Cranesbill--a type of geranium you might want to grow; Bayberry; Meadowsweet; Oakbark. I think its probably good to order some of these things online or get them from your local herbstore for those times just in case like for "the worst gluten reaction ever" etc. etc. Ditto with the liver cleansing herbs.

Bea

PS--am recovering fairly quickly. Still a slight headache with sensitive eyes. Digestive disturbance and slight D seems to have died down. My back and neck feel better. the continued use of apple cider vinegar seems to really help a lot. Am taking it easy today. I plan to go for a walk and do some yoga after a bit but am eating a little and want to take a hot bath before going out. Ironic, with all those who have hangovers, I too have one with no alcohol...like many of you too no doubt. Its these social times that are the most difficult for us to control...

I am glad you are recovering. I felt pretty good yesterday apart from the D but this morning I had horrible "heavy" nausea, almost feels like I have a lead ball in my belly (still higher up abover my umbilicus and in the middle) and such a horrible feeling. It comes in waves and takes my breath away. Do you think baking soda would help at all in this situation, since I'm not throwing up anymore? It seems like an hour or two after I eat this feeling comes, like the food is stuck where my poor intestines got poisoned :(

Bre

YoloGx Rookie

I doubt the baking soda would hurt; it will probably help. The apple cider vinegar may help too.--esp. if its live like Bragg's or Trader Joe's. Don't try to eat anything solid yet. gluten-free Broth may be OK.

Sorry this is lasting so long for you. When I got glutened from breathing in flour dust it took me three weeks to get over it. I ended up having to use the sauna at the Y and do lots of exercise as well as detox herbs since it went into my lungs and the effect settled in my joints. I hope it doesn't last that long for you. Take care of yourself and you should be OK.

I'm not over mine yet either actually. It also goes in waves. Am cleaning up my house, listening to music, resting, reading. I'll go for that walk tomorrow...

This year I vow to always take either a thermos of some of my tea or bottled water as well as some emergency food wherever I go especially if I am out in a social situation, no matter how casual...

This sounds very similar to the neuropathic pain I experienced with type two diabetes.  Gloves and boots pattern of neuropathy is common with deficiencies in Cobalamine B12 (especially the pain in the big toe), Niacin B3, and Pyridoxine B6.  These are vitamins frequently found to be low in people with pre-diabetes and diabetes.  Remember that blood tests for vitamin levels is terribly inaccurate.  You can have vitamin deficiencies before there are any changes in blood levels.  You can have "normal" serum levels, but be deficient inside organs and tissues where the vitamins are actually utilized.  The blood is a transportation system, moving vitamins absorbed in the intestines to organs and tissues.  Just because there's trucks on the highway doesn't mean that the warehouses are full.  The body will drain organs and tissues of their stored vitamins and send them via the bloodstream to important organs like the brain and heart.  Meanwhile, the organs and tissues are depleted and function less well.   Eating a diet high in simple carbohydrates can spike blood sugar after meals.  Eating a diet high in carbohydrates consistently over time can cause worsening of symptoms.  Thiamine and other B vitamins like Niacin B3 and Pyridoxine B6, (which I noticed you are not supplementing), are needed to turn carbs, proteins and fats into energy for the body to use.  Alcohol consumption can lower blood sugar levels, and hence, alleviate the neuropathic pain.  Alcohol destroys many B vitamins, especially Pyridoxine, Thiamine and Niacin.  With alcohol consumption, blood glucose is turned into fat, stored in the liver or abdomen, then burned for fuel, thus lowering blood glucose levels.  With the cessation of alcohol and continued high carb diet, the blood glucose levels rise again over time, resulting in worsening neuropathy.   Heavy exercise can also further delete B vitamins.  Thiamine and Niacin work in balance with each other.  Sort of like a teeter-totter, thiamine is used to produce energy and Niacin is then used to reset the cycle for thiamine one used again to produce energy.  If there's no Niacin, then the energy production cycle can't reset.  Niacin is important in regulating electrolytes for nerve impulse conduction.  Electrolyte imbalance can cause neuropathic pain.   Talk to your doctors about testing for Type Two diabetes or pre-diabetes beyond an A1C test since alcohol consumption can lower A1C giving inaccurate results. Talk to your doctors about supplementing with ALL eight B vitamins, and correcting deficiencies in Pyridoxine, Niacin, and B12.  Hope this helps!

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this—chronic neuropathic or nociplastic pain can be incredibly frustrating, especially when testing shows no nerve damage. It’s important to clarify for readers that this type of central sensitization pain is not the same thing as ongoing gluten exposure, particularly when labs, biopsy, and nutritional status are normal. A stocking/glove pattern with normal nerve density points toward a pain-processing disorder rather than active celiac-related injury. Alcohol temporarily dampening symptoms likely reflects its central nervous system depressant effects, not treatment of an underlying gluten issue—and high-dose alcohol is dangerous and not a safe or sustainable strategy. Seeing a pain specialist is absolutely the right next step, and we encourage members to work closely with neurology and pain management rather than assuming hidden gluten exposure when objective testing does not support it.
    • Scott Adams
There is no credible scientific evidence that standard water filters contain gluten or pose a gluten exposure risk. Gluten is a food protein from wheat, barley, or rye—it is not used in activated carbon filtration in any meaningful way, and refrigerator or pitcher filters are not designed with food-based binders that would leach gluten into water. AI-generated search summaries are not authoritative sources, and they often speculate without documentation. Major manufacturers design filters for water purification, not food processing, and gluten contamination from a water filter would be extraordinarily unlikely. For people with celiac disease, properly functioning municipal, bottled, filtered, or distilled water is considered gluten-free.
    • Scott Adams
Bottled water, filtered water, distilled water, and products like Gatorade are naturally gluten-free and do not contain gluten unless contaminated during manufacturing, which would be highly unlikely and subject to labeling laws. Gluten is a protein from wheat, barley, or rye—it is not present in water, minerals, plastics, phosphates, bicarbonate, or electrolytes. Refrigerator filters and reverse osmosis systems are not sources of gluten, and there is no credible scientific evidence that distilled or purified water triggers celiac reactions. If someone experiences symptoms after drinking a specific product, it is far more likely due to individual sensitivities, anxiety around exposure, or unrelated health factors—not gluten in water.
    • Scott Adams
Water does not contain gluten--bottled water included. This is an official warning that you'll receive a warning if you continue to push this idea. Gatorade is naturally gluten-free as well, and it's purified water does not include gluten. You can see all sort of junk on the Internet--that does not mean it is true.
