Already A Pill?

Okay so I have this favorite local health food store that carries tons of gluten-free food but also millions of herbal supplements. Well, like most stores, I've been there hundreds of times and still not seen everything they carry.

But I took my friend there the other day and we found this pill...It claims that it provides a chemical/hormone/something that allows gluten to be digested by gluten intolerant/celiac people thus allowing us to safely ingest gluten. I should have written down the name of the product but I was in a hurry. I will go back there and get the name later. _It claimed that celiac people don't have a certain peptide digester thingy and that the pill contained that peptide digester! Brain fart!-

I didn't buy it because I'm pretty sure its a hoax and because it was $23.99 and therefore out of my budget for the week.

Is it possible that this product might not be a hoax? Is it really possible that there might be a pill that lets us eat gluten? Have any of you seen this?

If it's glutenease or something along those lines, it's an enzyme that's supposed to aid in the digestion of gluten. The makers of Glutenease do not claim that their product is safe for celiacs, but rather those who either have a harder time digesting wheat, or are gluten intolerant for an underlying reason. And even then, only in small amounts.

I take digestive enzymes, but I don't venture into the world of glutenease. IF I were ever to use it, it would only be when my risk of CC would be high and unavoidable. (That's a debate around here) But only as a precautionary measure and not as a license to eat gluten containing foods.

I would be very skeptical of that product. Celiac is more complicated than lack of an enzyme. Otherwise, we'd all be cured.

Could be one of those supplements that does not have to go through the FDA. If that is the case they don't have to prove that it does what it states.

Probably a scam.

lizard00-thanks for clarifying. i think it is glutenease. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has heard of it. Honestly it sounded too good to be true and was too expensive to just try it out. Besides, the question in the back of my head was, "what if it only masks the symptoms and the damage still occurs?"

killernj13-it probably is one of the products that doesn't need reviewed by the FDA. I notice no grocery stores sell it, most unlike the lactose products...

I think most of us, when we first got our diagnosis, imagined that going gluten free would be the magic the bullet that would restore us to perfect health. We soon find out that it usually isn't quite that simple and that celiac disease has long fingers.

Thanks! I still have much to learn, I'd hoped going gluten-free would be a magic bullet and I'm learning my system is still very sensitive which is overwhelming and discouraging at times. Thanks for the yogurt tip! There is comfort in knowing that this is common during early healing and I'm not alone!

Thanks so much for the response. Are you usually able to pinpoint a trigger when you get the pain again? What I didn’t share in my earlier post is that I also usually eat out on weekends (though I share celiacs/needs to be gluten-free) and I’ve also been under a lot of stress lately in my personal life. While I’m speculating that it’s the wine it could certainly be a number of things. Do you ever notice the pain more when you are stressed? Learning so much about the brain/gut connection and celiacs. Thanks, there is comfort in hearing others have experienced similar symptoms.

This was my main symptom. I still get it from time to time. Also feels like a burning pain on the upper abdomen. I think the wine could definitely cause the pain to be worse. There are do many things I still can't eat.

Yes and this is true of gluten free ready made, processed and prepackaged foods in general. In particular, hard to digest polysaccharides are commonly used in these products that give many celiacs issues and I personally don't handle some emulsifiers well. IMO, reactions to these ingredients are often mistaken for a gluten reaction.
