Chip On The Top-front Of My Tooth (not At The Bottom)

About a week and a half ago, I was getting ready for be and brushing my teeth. I happened to look in the mirror and see a small indention in one of my front teeth in the center of the tooth, near the top. At first I thought it was a speck of food or something but upon further inspection, I realized that a small piece of my tooth had chipped off. I've had the bottom of my teeth (or the top, if it's a bottom tooth), chip a tiny bit but didn't know that it was really possible to have the surface of your tooth chip.

I've been gluten-free for nearly 3 years. I've been glutened a lot recently and am wondering if I have some major nutritional deficiencies. I'm a healthy eater - get loads of veggies, lots of protein, plenty of calcium (through skim milk and yogurt), etc. and I take a multivitamin plus extra magnesium daily.

Is this a Celiac problem or something random that happened to me? I need to make a dentist appointment for next week to check on this.

Hi Elizabeth,

Celiac can definately cause enamel problems. Before I was diagnosed, my front tooth chipped for no apparent reason and I had to have it bonded.

Although I have had only one cavity up until now, I've had 3 chipped teeth and one tooth that actually broke. It was a wisdom tooth, so I opted to have it pulled.

Thanks for the quick response Patti.

I'm a bit concerned right now as I've also been having floating stools. So combined with the tooth enamel problems, it looks like I am definitely have nutrient absorption problems. :(

i have several fillings that wernt cavities but "holes" in my enamel. i had one in my front tooth in the middle of the tooth. i didnt understand why i was getting these random holes in my teeth but now i know it was probably due to being celiac.

Correct. I’m doing both in the same go though. Thanks for clarifying before I confused someone. I’m doing a colonoscopy for something else and then they added the endoscopy after the test.

It is a biopsy but it's not a colonoscopy, it's an endoscopy.

Well I’m going on the gluten farewell tour so they are about to find out lol. I keep saying biopsy but yeah it’s a scope and stuff. I’m a dummy but luckily my doctor is not.

The biopsy for celiac disease is done of the small bowel lining and in conjunction with an "upper GI" scoping called an endoscopy. A colonoscopy scopes the lower end of the intestines and can't reach up high enough to get to the small bowel. The endoscopy goes through the mouth, through the stomach and into the duodenum, which is at the upper end of the intestinal track. So, while they are scoping the duodenum, they take biopsies of the mucosal lining of that area to send off for microscopic analysis by a lab. If the damage to the mucosa is substantial, the doc doing the scoping can often see it during the scoping.
