I Have Fingernails

I am 49 years young and for the first time in my life I am able to grow fingernails!! I was diagnosed on October 15, 2008 and my life has changed so much already. Not only are my nails growing but my hairdresser had to thin out my hair!! My GI told me this would happen but I am amazed by how well I am doing so far. I feel blessed to have been diagnosed and that I have a disease I can control by diet. Just last week I started meeting with a nutritionist that also has Celiac Disease. This is going to be the year for me!!!

I agree--it is wonderful on that level. I have had fingernails all along but now they no longer peel, plus my teeth have finally hardened, hair wavy and no longer always falling out etc. etc. Plus much healthier overall.

It is a drag sometimes socially, however it shows who is really there for you and who is not, so in a way it saves time.

Sounds great Cat! Take a look around the board here as there are quite a few threads on diet and how to get started doing gluten-free. I like a simple diet of home made food myself, with no processed crapola to cc me generally. It can take a while to learn all the hidden gluten sources so it is easier IMO to just eliminate processed foods. Welcome to the gluten-free life!

Congrats!! Welcome to the gluten-free life! That's exactly how I feel, lucky. The improvements are great and I am grateful every day. Keep up updated on your great year...

Congrats from me, too! I also noticed a difference. I like to keep my nails, short. I've always had to cut my nails about once a month, maybe. Now I'm finding I need to cut them every week! Same with shaving  . Used to be I'd shave once a week maybe, in the summer, about every other week in winter (or less). Now I have nubs 2 days after shaving. Not sure I like this part....but it shows that I am much healthier than I have EVER been, and just how far-reaching this condition has been!

My nails are better too. I'm even getting the little crescent moons back. Well not really sure what to call them but it's at the base of the nails. They were completely gone. I don't have them on all fingers yet, but slowly they are coming back.

After looking at Google images, the spleen is on the upper left abdomen, too!  An organ, part of the lymphatic system for immune function.  A filter.  Wonder how this relates to gluten sensitivity?

Hey, mistake in my post,  pancreas TAIL is on the left side.  Head is middle back of belly,

Hello, everyone, This upper left side pain is interesting to me.  I have this same pain almost all the time.  Started 2009 when I got diverticulitis for the first time.  Then had left ovarian cyst removed and a diagnosis of endometriosis all over inside.  Been attempting gluten-free since 2018.  It's not perfect, but still have that left sided pain.  Like up under the rib cage.  I believe the pancreas head is on that side, so I often wonder if I have a tumor or something there.  But it could also be an endometriosis adhesion in my belly.  I never got scraped.

One of my biggest issues is when a brand chooses to label one item gluten free, but not another. Why is Hunt's diced tomatoes labeled gluten free, but not the paste or sauce? I would have assumed they were all gluten-free, but why label one and not the others? It makes me suspicious.

Most of these items would be naturally gluten-free, with very little chance of cross contamination, thus they don't typically label them as gluten-free. If wheat is a potential allergen large companies disclose this in the ingredients as "Allergens: wheat."
