Gluten Free Beer

Roda

Roda Rising Star

I am not a drinker by any means. Occasionally I would have a beer or two or a glass of wine but not very often. I have been going to our local Earthfare and have been intrugued by the gluten free beer. This was my third visit to the store so I was curious and got a six pack. I waited for my husband to get home so we could try it together. I was suprised that it was a good as it was. Mind you I'm no beer drinker, but man did it taste good. A little bitter from the hops, but good. I figured it would be a more heavy stout beer, but it was a nice amber. I was a Yuengling fan before. So I ended up drinking three of them and decided to play a little trick on my mom and brother. I gave them a call and they said "what's you up to tonight?" I told them I was kicking back and drinking a beer. My mom was like "doesn't it bother you? What about the barley and wheat?" I just laughed and said it was gluten free. My brother's reaction was "how are you getting away with that? It's silly but for some reason I thought it was funny. They both know I don't indulge alcoholic beverages very often and they thought I was off my rocker since I have been diligent about my diet. For me I found it to be endearing to know they are thinking about me and concerned! I just thought I would share something on a lighter note. :P

I love it! It always makes me laugh when people get concerned that I'm eating gluten. Like the time I told my friends I'd be making them fondue for dinner and one of them feels the need to tell me that "um, you do realize that you dip bread in fondue... won't that make you sick?" As if I didn't know that and would accidentally use wheat bread!

Thank you for the warning. I get blood tests twice a year to check where I stand with the vitamins I regularly take, so I appreciate the extra reminder. I know some vitamins don’t build up but now I will watch the B6 for sure.

I think you would do well to take a high potency B-complex such that you get more balanced dosage across the spectrum of B vitamins. They work in concert.

Around 5 years ago I visited Tokyo, and luckily had my sister in law with me who is from there, otherwise it would have been more difficult. The bottom line is that there are tons of naturally gluten-free food options there, but you need to be able to communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Here is a gluten-free restaurant card for American visitors in Tokyo. It includes a request for a gluten-free meal and mentions common gluten-containing ingredients to avoid, like soy sauce and miso. English: Thank you. Japanese:   You can also download the Google Translate app, and besides being able to help you speak with people there about this, it has a camera app that translates Japanese text to English in your camera, so you can use it when shopping in a supermarket.

Be careful about how much B6 you take, as it can cause issues if you take too much of it over time.
