Hi all,

I am new to the forum. Was diagnosed 18 months ago after having Celiac's for 20 years.

Just started reading on here about vitamin D deficiencies and while at the docs last week, I had him give me the test. I too have a vitamin D deficiency. Here are my numbers: D2 3.1, D3 16.3, D19.4. He prescribed 50,000 IU once per week. Has anyone taken such a high dose? Is it hard on the stomach? Will it make any difference if I cut the pill in half and take half every three days?

Also my other question is what supplements do you take, how often and what are they for? Is Calcium and magnesium important to take since my D is so low?

Thanks

Bosque

I take 50,000 iu of vitamin D once a week also. It is a gel cap and I take it in the morning. I have not noticed any side effects from it except after about a month on it I started to feel great!!! :) I thought going gluten free made me feel better, but the vitamin D was the thing that has given me a lot back. I have a lot of energy now and have energy to do things. I don't have to worry about playing with the kids or the dog and getting so fatigued and tired from very little effort. My vitamin D level was 17 ish and I have been taking the prescription since January. I run out the end of this month, but I go back to my endocrinologist April 3rd, so I suspect I will get my level checked again to see if I still need the high dose. If my levels are good I am still going to supplement with about 1500-2000 iu a day. I don't want to feel like that again.

I take about 2k units of vit. D a day. I also take a calcium pill since I am basically dairy free, and a B complex. Also a liquid B -12 couple times a week. And a regular multi-vit pill too. I also take pysllium husks for extra fiber, and DPP-iv for cross contamination.

I have been using the eye drops every hour and at night the gel drops as well as the heating mask. I have been traveling and kind of slowed on this routine, but it seems to be back a bit more now that I'm back at work (on the computer).  It seems strange to me that I would start getting this after a couple of months into the gluten free diet. Between this, the muscle twitches, the anxiety... I am quite overwhelmed. I can't find much on people whose eyes start getting dry AFTER gluten free.

Welcome to the forum, @warren031945! Use the search tool in the upper right corner of this forum page to find articles addressing your needs. I know there have been articles done on celiac.com dealing with the question of gluten-free cheeses and candies. Whether or not you could find something already put together in one place that is gluten free is another question, however.
