Washington Dc?

My 14 yo is going to Washington DC for his 8th grade trip next week. It snuck up on me. I'm planning to send him with a bag full of beef jerky, Envirokidz bars, dried fruit and other snacks so he won't starve. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with the area around all the monuments and knows if there are places like Wendy's or any other place that he might be able to eat. He knows how to take care of himself and will live on ice cream and chips if he can't find any gluten-free food, but it might be nice to be able to tell him and his chaperones some places to look for.

Thanks!

That thread was started about three years ago but has recent posts. Most of the national chains with gluten free menus (Outback, Bonefish Grill, Legal Seafood, etc.) are represented in the area. I'd be concerned about a school trip giving him much flexibility to select a restaurant. I suspect they won't go to the restaurants listed due to average cost per entree.

I know the Mitsitam Cafe at the American Indian Museum has plenty of gluten-free stuff. It's even labeled! The Cascade Cafe at the National Gallery has a salad station and they use fresh bowls and utensils to mix each salad. All of the vegetables were fresh so I don't think he'd have an issue there. You might have to send dressing though. The Air & Space Museum at Dulles is pretty far away from everything and the only thing onsite is McDonald's.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to trust him to make good decisions and use self-control. Most of their meals are just listed as "Open" with $7.00 or $8.00 listed as how much they get to spend. Hopefully there will be lots of Wendy's or places with salad. The tour company wouldn't give me any information, they just said that the school group leader should have all the information. He told me to call the tour company. I'm wondering how much beef jerky I can send with him...

The only restaurant listed is called Alfio's in Chevy Chase. Their menu doesn't look too promising.

Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
