Disney World

Hi everyone,

I just had to stop in and share my experience about the wonderful gluten free time I had at Disney World. I know that summer is coming and vacation time is near, and it is always a stressful decision for my family and I to go anywhere and wonder if I will be able to eat anything. We had these wonders about going to Disney World and were so pleasantly surprised that I just had to share! I had some of the best gluten free dining experiences while on vacation. The first day I ate in the Magic Kingdom. My family and I went to a burger joint and I fully expected to eat a burger with no bun and no fries on the side. Low and behold, I was very very wrong. When I went to order my food, I asked the cashier if she knew if the fries were fried in the same oil as chicken tenders. She asked if I had an allergy, I said yes, and she said wait here let me get you a manager. The manager comes out toting a huge binder full of allergy information. We flipped to the celiac section together and pieced together a meal for me. I had a hamburger, with a bun! It was some really great bread too. She also had the chefs bake some French fries for me so I could have fries with my lunch. Also, when she brought out my burger, she brought me two, just in case I got hungry later! I wrapped the burger up and brought it home for a snack later. The next day while in Epcot, I had another fantastic meal in Little Italy. We were having a bit harder of a time finding food, all of the countries had gluten free options (which were wonderful) but some were more limited than others. We passed by Little Italy and I really didn

Wow! Gluten-free bread and pasta at a restaurant! Now that's amazing.

Do you know if Disneyland is as accommodating? I am planning a trip for next year.

YES! I went yesterday and they were amazing. Ask for their celiac/gluten free list at city hall. If you're going to a sit-down restaurant, reserve ahead, but I was so happy to find out there was quite a lot I could eat at walk-up restaurants! Ask for a manager or chef, and with no hesitation they come out and talk to you, let you know your options, and oversee what you get! They were friendly, very accommodating, and it didn't feel like I was asking them to do a tremendous chore.

Yesterday I had rice pasta with marinara for lunch, and a hamburger (with gluten-free bun!!), and fries (cooked in a dedicated frier!) for dinner. They also have pizza (that was in tomorrowland). This was my first real outing like that since dx in mid February.... I was so excited I almost cried!

There is also fresh fruit available all over the park. Not cheap, but where there is!? =)

My bro has kids will all sorts of complicated allergies, and they've had GREAT experience with all things Disney (even their cruises).

Cheers.

I too had a wonderful experience at Disney World. Everyone was knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I LOVE DISNEY!! Since we live in Florida we visit there several times a year.

Prolonged dehydration can cause kidney damage. How long has this been going on? Are you have diarrhea also? That's what the dyclomine is for I think.

Thanks for noticing my avatar, or "profile pic" as you call it. It trust the ichthus symbol is meaningful to you as well.  It's certainly nice to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease if that is the problem but I think you have discovered by experience in changing your eating habits that you either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). With either condition, the antidote is the same, total abstinence from gluten for a life. In some countries, like the UK, there are government subsidies for offsetting the cost of gluten free food and some additional follow-up support if you have an official diagnosis. Many people find themselves in the same boat as you by experimenting with the gluten-free diet before getting tested and unable to endure the "gluten challenge" in order to get testing done for an official diagnosis. It is very common for people with celiac disease to develop other food intolerances/sensitivities.
