Fail! Heinz 57

gar, i thought i had read the label but it might have been before i figured out malt vinegar was not good but i realized tonight it had it as i was eating it. so o well, so far my stomach is turning a bit and i expect to get a little reaction but probably nothing really bad.

o well

on a better note though i got to try redbridge and its not bad, i honestly am not a huge fan of beer (before i went gluten-free i wasnt a big fan of it and didnt plus still dont really drink much any way) but it is fine doesnt seem gluten-free and seems pretty light compared to normal beer.

If it was the ketchup, any gluten in it was probably due to an accidental contamination as Heinz lists their ketchup as gluten-free.

I used to work in a manufacturing facility for computers - a large computer maker (the biggest) - and have witnessed this many times first-hand. Companies, will not just dump a contaminated or defective product immediately. They will calculate statistical averages to weigh the costs/benefits. If they feel that the odds of losing money by not shipping a "problem" product are greater than shipping it, they will ship it.

IOW, if Heinz is aware that their product may contain gluten due to contamination, even though they advertise it to not contain gluten, they will ship it out if it could potentially lose them enough money. They will determine the odds that someone with an intolerance will consume the product and then determine how many of those will successfully trace their reaction back to their product and then of those who do, how many of those would actually file suit. Answer: not very likely. They will find ways to decrease these odds such as spreading out the "problem" product across a wider geographical region - mixing bad with good.

This was my experience with Kroger Tortilla chips. I saw them on sale for a $1.00/bag (a really low price). Why would they be priced this low, were they just feeling friendly, did they produce too many chips and had to get rid of them? No. They were trying to quickly get rid of them because of a contamination but they probably didn't realize there was a problem until they produced 1,000,000 bags of chips and they aren't just going to trash that many bags and lose that much dollars.

whoops didnt mention it is the steak sauce from them, that is an important part

luckily i didnt get any real issues from it

Heinz Tomato Ketchup is gluten free. Heinz 57 is not. I think it's the vinegar they use.

The only ketchup that Heinz makes is Heinz 57 ketchup - I have never seen "Heinz Ketchup". IF there is a difference please show me. The 57 just means that there are 57 varieties of food products that Heinz makes and does not denote a different type of ketchup.

Oh, steak sauce...

      I think potato chips can be fine depending on the oil used and the amount of salt on them, so if they help you gain weight you may want to keep them in your routine.

      I also had issues with severe neck and shoulder pain for years, so this may be a symptom of celiac disease.  In case you end up screening negative for celiac disease, approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

      Many thanks to everyone for the advice received and especially to Knitty Kitty.  I have ordered a one month supply of Benfotiamine and very much look forward to trying it.  The expression "I felt like I was dying" really resonates with me.  I have other symptoms which I didn't mention, such as vertigo and brain fog which are referenced by knitty kitty in her very detailed post. Clearly, there is other stuff that I should be trying, but I can only cope with one thing at a time at present! I will be back to let you know if the Benfotiamine, which should arrive in the next few days, has had any impact.🙂

      OK maybe I will look at future blood test just for historical changes. I am taking b vitamins as I mentioned in my other post to you. Definitely interested in Benfotiaminefor intestinal issues. However I already seem to be feeling some improvement in diverticulosis. Constipation gone but I think that resuming glucosamine may have something to do with that as well as general healing. Beans are antagonizing for me but I eat them anyway every few days in the form of pasta as well as baked beans. gluten-free for 4.5 months so still experimenting. Thanks for the info.

      Thanks @knitty kitty, I read your v b info with much interest for last few months. Here is my weight per event: sept 8, 2022- 181 lbs june 1, 2024 gluten free july 4- 143.5 lbs july31- changed from regular b to methyl folate and b12. oct 8- 150 lbs So weight hopefully coming back albeit very slowly. So probably my villi may be healing and methyl helping although also eating potato chips every few days so that is probably helping too.  Taking 100 mg of b1 along with complex. I took all thiamine maybe 100 or so tablets. Brain fog diminished some and it seems swallowing trouble also diminished. Stopped taking it couple months or so ago and did not notice any reversals. I think I will finally look into bentofothiamine. Also eat 1/2 ounce liver every morning for additional v b support.
