I'll Be A Vegan Celiac

Hi,

I'm new here.

I have a family of Celiacs. I've never had the majority of severe symptoms that my relatives had. But I have always had mouthfuls of canker sores & peeling lips (and I dont have oral herpes/cold sores). I've also have brain fog and fuzziness. I am EXTREMELY CRANKY ALL THE TIME. My boyfriend calls me "Crankies."

I've decided I'll try a gluten-free diet for awhile. I'm not too thrilled :P. I'm already a dedicated vegetarian/vegan (a vegan who frequently falls off the wagon and samples tidbits of cheese here and there .

I've read there are many other Vegan Celiacs out there (they have blogs online), although they are harder to find. I'll make potatoes and rice my staple foods instead of wheat. I already eat a lot of Japanese sushi and Indian foods here in the city, so the change shouldn't be THAT hard.

They found that I was "wheat sensitive" as a child... so I'll see if any of my crankiness, canker sores or peeling lips go away after several months on this diet.

WISH ME LUCK!!!!!

Hey Crankies...LoL,

Good luck with the gluten-free diet. It's not that hard once you get going. You have to be carefull for CC. I'd also check the sushi and Indian food. Soya sauce is a big No No and so are alot of spices in indian food. Check and read ingredients carefully.

Good luck :)

Hi -- and welcome.

I'm a newbie too. Just diagnosed with celiac disease 6 days ago!! I"m also a dedicated vegetarian (I hope to transition to veganism, but one thing at a time). I"m feeling a bit lost since I have relied on faux meats and texturized vegetable protein for some time now, but I'm pretty sure we can figure it out.

GOOD LUCK

      Thank you very much!

Thank you for the warning. I get blood tests twice a year to check where I stand with the vitamins I regularly take, so I appreciate the extra reminder. I know some vitamins don’t build up but now I will watch the B6 for sure.

I think you would do well to take a high potency B-complex such that you get more balanced dosage across the spectrum of B vitamins. They work in concert.

Around 5 years ago I visited Tokyo, and luckily had my sister in law with me who is from there, otherwise it would have been more difficult. The bottom line is that there are tons of naturally gluten-free food options there, but you need to be able to communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Here is a gluten-free restaurant card for American visitors in Tokyo. It includes a request for a gluten-free meal and mentions common gluten-containing ingredients to avoid, like soy sauce and miso. English: Thank you. Japanese:   You can also download the Google Translate app, and besides being able to help you speak with people there about this, it has a camera app that translates Japanese text to English in your camera, so you can use it when shopping in a supermarket.

Be careful about how much B6 you take, as it can cause issues if you take too much of it over time.
