Candida Meds - Which Ones Work?

I posted up in the other thread about leaky gut.

I finally did some research all night and did the spit test this morning. That came back as positive for Candida.

It also made me hate doctors.again....

Long story is I took Cipro 4 years ago before knowing I had Celiac's and it put me into 6 months of continuous problems. Now from reading, going back to my previous bouts with this I finally have it figured out...I hope :)

It was Candida all along. I was for the most part border line with having a severe problem with it and the anti-biotics kicked me over the edge. Well I took anti-biotics a while back and had a similar reaction as I did to Cipro and I've taken this before last year and had zero problems.

Last year however I did not eat refined sugar. No pop, candy, etc...we also

I never could figure out why I went months with no problems and then they popped up again, then went away. Well our diet dramatically changed. A lot of white rice, lot more sugar and we did go back to drinking pop on occasion.

So now adding this all up and looking at the history it was the Candida flairing up.

This time around it was more severe. I accidently was taking gluten AND anti-biotics. I had hypoglycemia and a bunch of other problems the past week. I was better by Easter sunday but got something I should not have which put me back to square one.

The past four days I've done the Candida diet. Its made a huge improvement. My bouts of up and down sugar are short but I'm still having a racing heart beat once in a while at night.

My problem is the shortage of carbs is causing me an issue. I work 10+ hours per day. We own our own business and things are really picking up. I need to be clear headed and the lack of carbs is not working. The spit test showed severe infection and I don't doubt it.

I've read about a lot of the Candida meds...which ones work? I need to have more carbs but I know without a counter to them I'm just making my problem worse.

My reaction is "mild". I get the symptoms of leaky gut but thankfully I can eat anything without stomach problems.

We'll pare down our diet on the carbs but I cannot have a lack of clear thought when with a customer. I also cannot be prepared for the day. I need to have the carbs, not the amount I was eating before but something to keep me going.

Anyone had any experience with them?

Thanks

Ms Jan Rookie

I've tried most of the recommended anti-candida remedies over the last three years, including the prescription drugs Nystatin and diflucan, with varying results. I do think what works best depends on the specific type of candida that is infecting you, and also on the individual digestive situation, but here are my personal experiences:

the candida diet is a must ! Eating nuts/almonds or beans/lentils can help with the carbs. Rice makes me as sick as any wheat does.

Diflucan and nystatin worked wonders for me the first time. but when I stopped, the candida recurred, and the second time the effect was weaker. and when I realized the problem would keep recurring I went for herbal solutions instead.

the probiotic Threelac works very well to keep down the candida, but has never totally cured it for me. The same goes for golden-seal (which is good against systemic candida - watch out for sensitivities as apparently goldenseal is not recommendable for celiacs), pau d'arco (which works well but is mild), liquid olive leaf extract (very good, but insufficient on its own - and make sure it does not contain alcohol), aloe vera juice helps clean the system, but is no real candida treatment. Wild oregano oil is very strongly antifungal, and works well, but to me somehow it had almost antibiotic effects and I felt it was also killing off good bacteria, so I stopped it. Also grape fruit seed extract works well, but wasn't the remedy to kill mycandida. Coconut oil is helpful, but it was when I went on to the caprylic acid a few months ago, that I finally found what was right for me. I'm still taking it, so of course I don't know what will happen when I stop, but I do feel that the candida is no longer bothering me at all.

I hope this can help - but you might need to do a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you ...

Good luck!

I will also suggest caprylic acid capsules, as that is what worked for me. Funny thing is, I didn't tapper down carbs one bit. And at the time I had no idea about gluten, so was still eating that too. I was really eating far too much carbs - I'd typically have about a pound of pasta and half a loaf of bread each day. Somehow though, the caprylic acid still worked great! I took it for around two or three months I think.

However, some things I did do along with the capsules were probably very important. I avoided all sugars, vinegars (such as ketchup), yeasts (such as yeast breads), and fruit. I waited maybe a year before trying fruit, and still only one piece in any given week at most. I can now eat fruit more often, but I didn't even try to for a long time. So I don't know how long I really needed to wait. I was just determined never to let the yeast get out of hand again. To this day, I still do not eat any refined sugars or yeasts.

Thanks for your replies.

My Candida problem seems to solve itself quickly if I stay away from sugars. I need a trigger for it to really get going and that trigger is either gluten or anti-biotics.

Without those two I seem to be good regardless of what I eat.

This has been a bit of a wake up so I will cut back on the bad stuff. I started drinking pop, on a regular basis...I started having my favorite snack, potatoe chips and sweet relish(trust me, its good), we ate a lot more sugar and I was OK until I took the anti-biotics.

I started taking Candex last night and I had to have some carbs this morning. Had a Van's Waffle with Agave with no ill effects.

I'm done with the sugar part, I can skip that but I have to have some sugar. Last year I ended up at the doctor with 2 veins which has calcified. Doctor told me it happens sometimes and it was not a big deal. Gave me some meds and if it didn't clear up they'd just take them out. This happened after I went on a no sugar/flour diet.

Well we went on a cruise a few days after and toward the end we started breaking down a bit and having some dessert, ice cream, even a drink here and there.

Vein issue went away...in a day! Came back and went back on the diet, problem came back. Now I have to have some sugar, usually just whatever comes in most foods is good enough to keep it away.

Doc has no explanation and told me to just eat the minimal sugar needed. Even in the past two days its started to re-surface. Its wild because it will hurt like hell, I'll drink a glass of Pepsi, and in 30 minutes its gone.

I'll try the caprylic along with the Candex. I'm also drinking lemon water now too.

Candex worked for me!

Candex is it and I'll probably add in the caprylic acid too.

What an amazing difference. After my last glutening I decided no more and we ate strictly at home. We called every single company for every product and unless we got an emphastic YES it went in the trash.

Still had odd issues and I went nuts trying to figure it out. We did buy the Yeast No More diet book which did have a lot of good info and after reading that it mirrored my situation. I gave up gluten and once in a while had a stomach issue.

Sometimes I'd have a stomach issue, other times I had a nerve/insomnia/hypoglycemia issue for a few weeks after. I always attributed it to gluten introduced to an extremely high temp.

Now I can track back to how I felt to what I ate. We used to eat only anti-biotic free but got away from that. As my anti-biotic intake increased, my sugar intake increased, and these problems popped up.

I started the Candex shortly after posting this and it has produced incredible results so far. Since last August I've had some minor vision issues. I was told it was an opthomolic migraine that was flairing up. I always felt a bit conjested and chalked it upto seasonal allergies. After taking the Candex for just three days its gone.

I read how Candida gets in everything if you have leaky gut, and how it causes leaky gut. Then it gets in everything else.

I'll stay on Candex once I finish the treatment.

If you have been eating the gluten equivalent of 4-6 slices of wheat bread daily for say, 4 weeks, I think a repeat blood test would be valid.
    • englishbunny
it did include Total Immunoglobin A which was 135, and said to be in normal range. when i did the blood test in January I would say I was on a "light' gluten diet, but def not gluten free.  I didn't have any clue about the celiac thing then.  Since then I have been eating a tonne of gluten for the purpose of the endoscopy....so I'm debating just getting my blood test redone right away to see if it has changed so I'm not waiting another month...

Welcome to the forum, @englishbunny! Did your celiac panel include a test for "Total IGA"? That is a test for IGA deficiency. If you are IGA deficient, other IGA test resultls will likely be falsely low. Were you by any chance already practicing a reduced gluten free diet when the blood draw was done?

I'm upset & confused and really need help finding a new gastro who specializes in celiac in California.  Also will welcome any insights on my results. I tested with an isolated positive for deamidated IGA a few months ago (it was 124.3, all other values on celiac panel <1.0), I also have low ferritin and Hashimotos. Mild gastro symptoms which don't seem to get significantly worse with gluten but I can't really tell... my main issues being extreme fatigue and joint pain. The celiac panel was done by my endocrinologist to try and get to the bottom of my fatigue and I was shocked to have a positive result. Just got negative biposy result from endoscopy. Doctor only took two biopsies from small intestine (from an area that appeared red), and both are normal. Problem is his Physician's Assistant can't give me an answer whether I have celiac or not, or what possible reason I might have for having positive antibodies if I don't have it. She wants me to retest bloods in a month and says in the meantime to either "eat gluten or not, it's up to you, but your bloodwork won't be accurate if you don't" I asked if it could be I have early stage celiac so the damage is patchy and missed by only having two samples taken, and she said doctor would've seen damaged areas when performing endoscopy (?) and that it's a good sign if my whole intestine isn't damaged all over, so even if there is spotty damage I am fine.  This doesn't exactly seem satisfactory, and seems to be contrary to so much of the reading and research I have done. I haven't seen the doctor except at my endoscopy, and he was pretty arrogant and didn't take much time to talk. I can't see him or even talk to him for another month. I'm really confused about what I should do. I don't want to just "wait and see" if I have celiac and do real damage in the meantime. Because I know celiac is more that just 'not eating bread' and if I am going to make such a huge lifestyle adjustment I need an actual diagnosis. So in summary I want to find another doctor in CA, preferably Los Angeles but I don't care at this stage if they can do telehealth! I just need some real answers from someone who doesn't talk in riddles. So recommendations would be highly welcomed. I have Blue Shield CA insurance, loads of gastros in LA don’t take insurance at all 😣

Okay, Lori, we can agree on the term "gluten-like". My concern here is that you and other celiacs who do experience celiac reactions to other grains besides wheat, barley and rye are trying to make this normative for the whole celiac community when it isn't. And using the term "gluten" to refer to these other grain proteins is going to be confusing to new celiacs trying to figure out what grains they actually do need to avoid and which they don't. Your experience is not normative so please don't proselytize as if it were.
