Hi,

So I have a random question. I was reading somewhere the other day (some other post on the forum) about complications from Celiac and birth control. I was reading that someone was worried about how effective her birth control would be if she got glutened. There was also talk about after a glutening if the stomach would still absorb the medication properly until the villi had healed. Has anyone else considered this? I hadn

I'm not sure how effective it would be after contamination, but a good question would be if the birth control itself should contain gluten in the makeup (i.e. coatings and fillers). I always have to check with my pharmacist if any medications I am being administered contain gluten. Also (a little off subject, but something any girl with celiac should know), some feminine products may contain gluten, such as the adhesive on some pads. I didn't even think about it until my mother, who was diagnosed five years ago, brought up that she was getting rashes on her thighs from her pads. Lo and behold, the adhesive contained gluten. Just FYI.

i found this a couple months ago... i had started a new borth control (the generic of ortho tri cyclen) and had gotten very ill about two weeks into it. so i started looking up ingredients. somewhere on this list is the birth controls that were safe at the time of printing. i would always try to keep updated though.. try to find current infor. i just thought this would be a place to start.

as for me, i have been on birth control successfully for almost two years now. i have been glutened pretty seriously at least twice and have not had any pregnancy scares. however, i do feel it is plausable that a glutening could lead to a pill not being absorbed.

for me, a glutening means one day of stomach issues, two at the most. and if you miss one pill you're usually still protected. (note: this is in no way scientific, just my own logic. so i could TOTALLY be wrong) i would however feel safe in saying if you've been glutened and say have the D for a few days it may be a good idea to use another form of BC.

Yes no gluten in my diet. I get so sick that I have to go to the ER for fluids and medicine. I was diagnosed in 2017 but was told I probably have had it my whole life. (Went to Mayo in 2019 to confirm diagnoses and address all other autommune issues ect.) Also intolerance to sugar alcohols and chicory root. Try to eat clean and stay away from processes foods.

Dawn, are you diligent with the gluten free diet? When were you diagnosed with celiac disease?

I am on Otzela for my psoriasis an psoriasis arthritis.  They tried pretizon and I got sick on it. ( the doctor at urgent care). Need to see my doctor but he seems puzzled by me. My celiac disease is unresponsive and my numbers are off the chart.  ( 2nd testing went higher but Mayo said they might never go down because I have it so bad) Came back home considering going back to Mayo.

Welcome to the forum, @Dawn Meyers! Are you currently on immunosuppressant medications for your various autoimmune disorders?

Hi I have celiac disease and the dermatitis herpetiformis rash Also other autommune diseases.  I have had bad side effects to all the vaccines I have had and now my Doctor wants me to have the pneumonia vaccine.  I am concerned because of some of the bad side effects I have had in the past example Hep B after shot couldn't  move arm for several months.  Flu shot and COVID was sick right after shot. Told not to get anymore. My lung is inflamed and have a cough I can't seem to get rid of. Very concerned 😟.
