Peppermint Oil Pills-promising Results For Me

I am a medical librarian and although now I stay at home with my child, I still peruse medical research news weekly as well as run searches on Celiac Disease. About five months ago, I came across a study of the effect of fiber, antispasmodics, or peppermint oil as a treatment for IBS. I couldn't get the article out of my head and decided to try peppermints gels. Although I've had great success on the gluten-free diet since my diagnosis, I still had some problems such as dyspepsia and severe bloating. I started taking 2 NOW Peppermint Gels twice a day on an empty stomach two months ago. It has made a huge difference for me. I no longer am bloating at all and I finally feel normal. Maybe I'm a fluke, but there is chance I'm not and this can help other people. Here is the link to the article:

I feel like a shill here. I don't work for NOW. Sort of wish I did. ;-)

I worked in a supplement dept. in a health food store for a lot of years and Peppermint gels are awesome. I took one one time, and burped it. The peppermint went in my nose, all up my throat so make sure you have swallowed them and they dont burst. The tea works really well too in this case. Gripe Water, its usually for colichy babies, works really well for bloating and the like! Good Suggestion northernsunshine!

Peppermint oil actually helped me a ton too when I had IBS, but once I went completely off dairy and gluten I didn't need to take them anymore.

It happened again! After I read this post I decided to try taking one. Its the Now brand, and I took it at 10am. At 6pm I started burping peppermint! Has this happened to anyone else?

Yea unfortunately this is a very common side effect, I personally liked the minty fresh breath

Are the ones you're taking enteric coated? This can help reduce the minty burps and/or possible heartburn.

Yes they are enteric coated. I like the minty breath too, but Its making my throat and tummy cold feeling. Did they help u right away or did u have to take them for a while? Arent they suppost to help with heartburn? Why do they cause it? Should I try again or get something else? Will they help with intestinal healing?

I do not really remember, I think I had to take them for a little while before I started to notice the benefits. I believe they can help with heartburn if you don't have enough stomach acid but they can also cause it if you have too much. It's a double edged sword. I always made sure to take them in between meals so I didn't get any heartburn.

I personally only found them helpful when I had IBS and bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine. I don't think they will help with intestinal healing. I believe they only help to sooth and calm the intestines. Unless you still have IBS symptoms I would recommend trying something else to actually physically help repair the intestines.

Here is what I am currently/was taking:

I haven't had a problem with peppermint gels dissolving in my stomach or causing burping. That would definitely be a drawback, but at least you'd be minty fresh. ;-)

They actually started helping pretty quickly, probably within a few days. Before them, even with the gluten-free diet, I'd get bloated at night. Even though I run and am in good shape, every single night I looked like I gained 20 pounds. It was depressing.

Peppermint oil can cause heartburn --> "Peppermint relaxes the gastro-esophageal sphincter, thus promoting belching." (Taken from Wikipedia)

So if you are currently suffering from acid reflux you might want to avoid peppermint oil.

I dont have acid reflux, but my stomach was bothering me that day. I was hoping the peppermint would calm it down. It did make me burp alot and gave me heartburn but only for like an hour. Maybe its just too strong for my system right now. I will stick to the tea. Thank you for the info :)

drink peppermint tea. or better yet buy a peppermint plant for your herb garden and just chew on it or dry it to make your own tea. it will cure the burping and it makes me feel better knowing there is not chance of gluten in it

This is good advice, one word of caution about having it in the garden though. The mint family spreads readily. It can be pretty invasive. I got around this issue by planting it in a large pot, just dig a big hole, make sure the pot has drainage holes in it so that the plant doesn't drown. This also makes it so you can bring the pot inside for the winter.

In case you decide to go the route of a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood test or biopsy: Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

Kosher salt is not usually iodized. Shortly after starting GFD in 2014, I realized I wasn't getting enough iodine.  Growing up in the 50's and 60's we ate bread that used iodine as a dough modifier so each slice had about 100 mcg of iodine.  A sandwich and glass of milk supplied 300 mcg a day.  In the 70's they stopped using iodine as a conditioner in the US.  Then everyone got scared of milk.  The US intake of iodine dropped 50% since 1974.  Prescriptions of Thyroxine for hypothyroid disease doubled in the same period.  I tried using iodized salt and seaweed and took an expensive thyroid supplement but it wasn't enough.  In 2014 I had a sebaceous cyst (third eye blind).  The previous 6 cysts on my face had all drained and healed with no problem back in the 1990,s.  One on my check had sugically removed. They are genetic from my mom and my brother and son also get them in the same places.  This one I did not have surgery for because I wanted a bellweather to moniter healing.  It did not start healing until I started until 10 years when I started taking 600 mcg of Liquid Iodine a year ago Nov 2023. Lot's of comment about how it was offputting and maybe cancer, it was deep, down to the bone, but I can be obstenant.  Now it is scabbing over and healing normally.  Vision is returning to my right eye (glucoma), musle tone in my chest was the first sign of improvement.  For healing, iodine breaks down defective and aging cells to make room for new growth. I take Liquid Iodine drops from Pipingrock.com but there is also Strong Iodine and Lugols Solution. 50 mcg/drop a dropper full is 12 drops, 600 mcg.,  usually I put it in a can of Red Bull, My brother, son and his family also started taking it. https://www.pipingrock.com/iodine/liquid-iodine-2-fl-oz-59-ml-dropper-bottle-14690 390 drops for $8.  They ship internationally if you can't find it locally. It the US the Safe Tolerable Upper Limit is 1000 mcg a day.  In Japan it is 3000 mcg a day.  The Japanese traditional diet has 50% less breast cancer, nicer hair, skin and nails, and in the 80's the US educational system dropped down comared to the rest of the world while Japanese kids moved up to the top.  Low iodine affects brain fog. According to most education rankings, Japan generally has a higher education rating than the United States, with Japan often ranking within the top 10 globally while the US usually places slightly lower.  In the 1960s, the United States was near the top of the world for education, especially for young people.  About why iodine was removed from medicint: The Wolff-Chaikoff Effect: Crying Wolf? Current "gluten challenge" recommendations are the daily consumption of at least 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) daily leading up to the day of the biopsy.

Thank you for your input!  I would really like to know if I have celiac disease because you need make sure you are not getting any cross contamination due to cancer concerns.  I guess I need to start with a knowledgeable Gastroenterologist. Thank you again!
