Stool Sample And Celiac

Hi! I have posted on here about my 20 month old likely having celiac disease. He has a positive blood test for two out of three but not the TgT. There is a strong family history and he became FTT when solids were introduced. I decided not to do the biopsy because of the risks and because it would have taken too long and he was going down hill fast.

He went to the GI doctor about three weeks ago and they order a stool sample. I decided two weeks ago to not do the biopsy and take him off gluten. He has been eating like a pig (big change) and put on a little less than a half of a pound in the three weeks since going to the GI doctor! That is huge!

So the stool sample came back showing fat and white blood cell emyznes (sp?) in it. I asked the nurse if that could be because he was still on gluten at the time of the sample and the nurse told me in a very snotty tone "no, we don't know why!" She then order me to take another stool sample when he had been off gluten for 6 weeks to see if there is a difference??

here are the test results

Fat Fecal: Abnormal

Reducing substances:Negative

Lactoferrin, Stool Source: Positive

Does that make any sense? Does anyone have experience with stool samples? How accurate are they? Help! Thank you!

It took me 2-3 years to feel like my gut recovered, and then I still had gluten ataxia issues for well over a decade.  This study indicates that a majority of celiacs don't recover until 5 years after diagnosis and starting a gluten-free diet: Mucosal recovery and mortality in adults with celiac disease after treatment with a gluten-free diet However, it's also possible that what the study really shows is the difficulty in maintaining a 100% gluten-free diet. I suspect that if you looked closely at the diets of those who did not recover within 2 years might be that their diets were not 100% gluten-free. Perhaps they ate out more often, or didn't understand all of the hidden ingredients where gluten can...

Good idea, but make sure she does not require lactose free cheese,it is common in celiac patients.

I was diagnosed with dermatitis herpetiformis and ultimately celiac disease in September 2024.  I am trying to navigate the world with celiac, unsuccessfully, still having dermatitis herpetiformis outbreaks.  Grocery shopping is difficult, shopping for toiletries is nearly impossible. Dining out is also a challenge. Can anyone recommend iPhone apps that will make these easier?  Thanks so much!

Welcome to the forum, @pmarklesparkle! Thanks for sharing your diagnostic journey as it may be helpful to others who are getting mixed results during the diagnostic phase. Kudos to the gastro NP who dug deeper and ordered the endoscopy/biopsy. You may also wish to investigate a low iodine diet to get a handle on your continued outbreaks of dermatitis herpetiformis.
