Hardwood Smoke

I recently bought a pre-packaged piece of salmon and the ingredients are salmon, salt, and hardwood smoke. I don't know why I had it in my mind that hardwood smoke could be a possible concern for gluten, but does anyone know if it is ok?

Well, the liquid smoke I have is water and natural hickory smoke concentrate. it is made by Wrights and they say it is gluten free. It is used as a flavoring for smoking meats and as long as it really is just water and smoke from hardwood, then it should be fine. Do you have the company info for the salmon that you could check on it. Or if it came from the butcher at the store they could tell you what brand of smoke they use?

thanks, i have the package but they do not list a phone number and i can't seem to find their number on the internet just yet (it's made from spencer company.) their internet site doesn't list a phone number for some reason (i hate that!) i'll keep trying to look for some contact info. before i eat it!

      So, is their reasoning for doing another biopsy after you've been gluten free for awhile to get a comparison of before and after? In other words, there should be healing of the SB lining if you go gluten free for awhile if you have celiac disease?

      Welcome to the forum, @Tazzy11! Yes, your DGP-IGG test is positive. It means you could have celiac disease. But there are other possible causes for an elevated DGP-IGG count. I note that your TTG-IGA was not positive. The TTG-IGA is considered the chief celiac antibody test and a bit more reliable than the DGP-IGG. But let me ask you an important question. Prior to the blood draw, had you already begun to limit your intake of gluten? Also, were these the only two tests ordered to check for celiac disease? A physician should always order what we call the "total IGA" test (it goes by other names as well) to check for IGA deficiency. If you are IGA deficient, the scores for individual IGA celiac antibody tests, such as the TTG-IGA will be falsely low. By the way you spelled "coeliac" I judge you must be in the UK. There are several other antibody tests that can ordered when checking for celiac disease in order to get a more complete picture. Here is an article outlining the various tests:

The article includes the "Mayo Clinic Protocol," which is the best overall protocol for results to be ~98% accurate.    Per this article: They will likely schedule an endoscopy to see if you have celiac disease, and for this they would want you to continue eating gluten daily until that test is completed.

      You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
