El Paso Mexican Or Other Food

I'm traveling from Dallas to El Paso for a conference with husband and kids. We've never been to West Texas, so I want to feel like we "experienced life" there. I'm talking about good (gluten-free) Mexican food. Can anyone recommend some local restaurants -- fast food or sit down? I would like to know what ya'll eat there.

Wish I could tell ya something, but I've never been there. Every time I thought about driving to El Paso, I quickly said "no thanks", it's halfway to California. Flying is the way to go.

I have been to plenty of other border towns however. And as a lifelong mexican food lover, I can say that we have some of the best tex-mex right here in the metromess. Nobody beats Dallas/Fort Worth for shear numbers of excellant tex-mex restaurants (IMO). That being said, you shouldn't have any problem finding good tex-mex in El Paso, the problem is finding gluten-free tex-mex anywhere. Wheat flour seems to be the common thickener used in most of the chili con carne sauces. That rules out the beef and/or cheese enchiladas (my fav). Also, the sour cream sauce always has wheat flour so we can't have sour cream chicken enchiladas. Of course it goes without saying the beef taco/enchilada meat may have (probably has) wheat flour in it. Then the chips and crispy tortillas are probably fried in contaminated oil. Now someone said the refried beans may have wheat. :unsure:

It's really a nightmare, and yet I haven't gotten sick yet eating in a mexican restaurant. I mostly stick to nachos and margaritas. Sometimes I'll have crispy chalupas with chicken, beans, lettuce, tomatos, and the fixins, sour cream, guacamole, salsa etc.

If you want to experience "real" mexican, just pop in to any of the hundreds of taquierias in the Dallas / Fort Worth area, or the food court in a Fiesta Food Mart. They always use those little white corn tortillas for tacos (they eat soft tacos). You may find them a little on the greasy side though.

I just spent 9 days on a Tequila Tour. We went to Guadalahara, Tequila (the town), and Arandas. I never once uttered the words gluten-free. Ate at all kinds of strange places. Ate some street vender food. Never got sick. They use only corn masa to make their tortillas. You see them making the tortillas all over every morning. Never once saw a flour tortilla. What a great experience.

      Hello all,  I’m in the process of testing for celiac and I can’t wait to hear back if I have ancestry dna for celiac.  For a while, I’ve been suffering with so many symptoms, but I never connected it to celiac or NSGS.  All have gotten better with gluten-free diet.   Here are my symptoms and maybe someone would know if they are more related to NCGS or Celiac.   Chronic constipation, brain fog, memory issues, brain feels like it’s on fire sometimes, adhd, depression, anxiety, dry mouth, mouth sores, skin lesions/sores that went away with gluten-free diet, dry eyes, joint pain and cracking, chronic fatigue, graphical tongue, breast tenderness, vitamin B12 and D deficiencies, gas that would clear a room, leg and ankle feel like they are heavy or retaining water/painful, acne, brittle nails, night sweats and horrible heart palpitations.

      Excellent thread topic. In the area I live there is only one food bank to my knowledge that has gluten free packaged foods. So in regular circumstances support agencies have limited gluten-free stock.  For myself I would not be able to utilize likely many of the potential products they would have. I have additional intolerances, Corn is still an issue for me and can be found in many gluten-free packages foods as well. Similar to Scott, I have a pantry with items as well. I keep canned gluten-free proteins  example beans, jerky, fish, gluten-free packaged nuts, seeds,dried fruits, some canned vegetables. Also a gluten-free fruit juice and water as well. Many times there are often gluten-free packaged brands that contain corn, corn starch, or corn derivatives so I am limited which brands I can consume. I still make many baked products myself from gluten-free flours. In the past, when I priced out meal ration kits/ emergency food kits I found they can be quite expensive or limited gluten-free options. So I use the common "pantry" foods or "car trunk" gluten-free protein snacks I grab and go with when away from  home/ gluten-free kitchen  for the day. Best wishes .

      I see the info below in their FAQ, but nothing that would worry me about their apple cider. I don't see how gluten could end up in a juice processing plant, but if you are concerned you could contact them directly for more info. If wheat were a possible allergen, they would need to disclose this in the ingredients.

      I was worried because the companies FAQ section made it sound like it could go either way if it was cross contaminated or not from their distributors
