Leg Cramps At Night

I'm starting day 8 of gluten free eating and I have noticed a couple nights I have had leg cramps. This is new to me....never had them before. Could this be due to the change in my diet?

I'm trying not to give up, but sometimes I have felt worse than I did before starting this diet! Anybody else experience these frustrations in the very beginning?

I don't know specifically why your change of diet may have caused the leg cramps, but I used to suffer from morning calf cramps myself, and I found that it was due to a calcium/magnesium imbalance.

Basically calcium help muscles to contract and magnesium helps them to relax. I took 2 doses of 300mg magnesium per day (taken in magnesium citrate form), and found that within a week, the cramps went away.

The only way of knowing whether this will help is to try it.

I had been suffering badly from calf cramps lately and began taking a mega multi-mineral. Voila, no more leg cramps.

Anemia can cause leg cramps. I would venture to say that it is not the Gluten Free Diet as much as it is probably a need for increased iron (through a good multi-V).

Adding calcium supplements (Caltrate) helped my nighttime legs cramps immensely. :)

I am not taking anything except for the multivitamins that I purchased from the supermarket.

The critic acid and sodium citrate is corn unfortunately and they don’t have to label corn because it’s not part of the top 9 allergen and not mandatory 😭

Yaya, from the JAMA study you refer to: "Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity." No one on this forum is recommending  taking anywhere near that amount. We're talking about 5-10,000IU daily.

"Doses higher than the RDA are sometimes used to treat medical problems such as vitamin D deficiency, but these are given only under the care of a doctor for a specified time frame. Blood levels should be monitored while someone is taking high doses of vitamin D." Quoted from the Healthline article @Yaya linked above...
