Got Glutened But Not With The "usual" Symptoms

So after being gluten-free for three weeks I got glutened last night. (small bowl of frosted flakes before reading "malt" and one small bite of regular mac and cheese). I have been so careful for three weeks and am starting to notice the positive side effects until screwing up yesterday. (I wont make that mistake again). Anyway hours into the day I noticed I had a headache, but not much else, so I thought maybe I had tricked by body into not noticing. WRONG! BY the end of the night I had the worse migraine EVER and felt sick to my stomach, had minor chest pain and limb tingleness. No cramps or D. This morning ALL is well again. Obviously I had been glutened but I was just wondering if anyone else has had similiar things happen, especially the headache and chest pain. I seriously doubt it was a coincidence. The chest pain was a bad symptom I had before being diagnosed (positive BT & Endo) and by process of elimination (before I knew what was wrong I had gone to the ER due to bad chest pains and numbness in my left arm) they tested my heart (EJG/heart monitor and stress test) and it was fine. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similiar issues. Thanks :)

I used to get migraines on average once a week...headaches...almost every day it seemed. My left arm will tingle or feel flushed with warm water, go clammy and cold back to warm again (then sometimes I have a panic/anxiety-like attack). I started getting heart palpitation like symptoms in college...it's inconclusive actually, but I experience them more than half as less as I used to.

I also had to wear a heart monitor and they only said I have ectopic heart beats going off what I said it felt like when I'd experience it. That it could be minor palpitations too.

When I get glutened I experience all symptoms including DH and water retention...how I know is my wedding ring (which is a bit big) will become tight.

Its good to know I'm not the only one. It's funny that the left arm is the only one that gets affected. I felt stupid telling my Dr that before I knew what was wrong but it was always only the left arm! Do you ever suffer from the chest pains? It mimics a heart attack with the left arm, chest pains and before it was really hard to breathe. I had gastritis & esophagitis because of the celiacs which had everything so swelled up that maybe it put added pressure that area.

I was getting very short of breath easily, and panic type attacks, tingling in arms, hands and feet. Sometimes I would go to pick something up and I could not properly close my fingers without getting sharp pains.

I had ECG and blood tests. Diagnosed with bad anemia, they wanted me to have blood transfusions at the ER. I went home and started taking slow iron and watching diet. Dr. said all symptoms were from low iron.

But I would have severe panic attacks when waking up at night with itching attack. It seems to e slowly getting better.

I also have frequent headaches, but that seems better.

Was it actual chest pain, or light a weird "tightness" in your chest, because I get that.

Hey Talia4, I still try to stay on the lower end of carb intake but things are way easier for me these days. It really looks like a digestive issue at the core in my case   As supplements with meals I'm now taking 3-4x 650mg betaine hcl without pepsin (to handle larger doses) 1-2x Doctor's Best digestive enzymes   And daily Share Pommelozzini. This has helped my digestion immensely with carbs and fats. I'm way more tolerant of larger meals and things are a lot easier. Happy to hear any progress or findings on your end as well though!

I think most of us, when we first got our diagnosis, imagined that going gluten free would be the magic the bullet that would restore us to perfect health. We soon find out that it usually isn't quite that simple and that celiac disease has long fingers.

Thanks! I still have much to learn, I'd hoped going gluten-free would be a magic bullet and I'm learning my system is still very sensitive which is overwhelming and discouraging at times. Thanks for the yogurt tip! There is comfort in knowing that this is common during early healing and I'm not alone!

Thanks so much for the response. Are you usually able to pinpoint a trigger when you get the pain again? What I didn’t share in my earlier post is that I also usually eat out on weekends (though I share celiacs/needs to be gluten-free) and I’ve also been under a lot of stress lately in my personal life. While I’m speculating that it’s the wine it could certainly be a number of things. Do you ever notice the pain more when you are stressed? Learning so much about the brain/gut connection and celiacs. Thanks, there is comfort in hearing others have experienced similar symptoms.

This was my main symptom. I still get it from time to time. Also feels like a burning pain on the upper abdomen. I think the wine could definitely cause the pain to be worse. There are do many things I still can't eat.
