Baby Wipes

I'm new to gluten-free and I'm trying to think of all the ways my child can be getting gluten. This may be a silly question but do baby wipes contain gluten? I mostly use baby wash cloths when we're at home. When we're out I use the wipes to clean my childs hands and high chair etc. I noticed she would get a diaper rash when I used wipes so I stopped a long time ago but they're very handy when we're out.

Also, I was wondering about scotch tape. I had read that stickers can have gluten in the adhesive so I was a little worried about craft projects.

Thanks so much for the information.

I may be wrong, but it is only gluten that is ingested and goes thru your intestines. So if you are using baby wipes for the bottom, it should be fine, but not for face and hands, and that is "if" they contain gluten. I read the labels on mine, and none of mine contain anything that would be dangerous.

I always by unscented.

Thanks Lucy,

That's what I thought too. My daughter sucks her thumb so I like to give her a quick scrub when I'm not where I can wash her hands. She's three so she hasn't figured out what's gross to touch and what's not. ;) I'm finding that I'm obsessing a little about the whole gluten-free issue. :)

Make sure things you put on her hands are gluten free because if she sucks her thumb it will clearly get into her mouth.

If its on her bottom I wouldn't worry about it..thats not going to be getting into her mouth.

Another thing I use when I am out is Purell instant hand sanitizer. It is gluten free and good to use when your out and about..don't know if that may be an option for you..

Thanks Katie,

I'm sure she's getting some of the wipe chemicals in her mouth and also I clean the resturant tables with the wipes also. I try not to use the wipes on her bottom any more because her skin is so prone to eczema and psoriasis. This is great new about the Purell being gluten-free. I think I remember a recipe for making a baby wipe solution with Grape Seed Extract. I pretty sure they recommending using the solution on unbleached paper towels. I'm going to start using the Purell for her hands and maybe the homemade wipes for major clean ups. No matter what's on her hands it usually ends up in the mouth! :P Thanks so much for the ideas and information.

In regards to the baby wipes causing diaper rash on your child: my husband sometimes paints agricultural equipment at work, and he comes home with the paint on his hands, arms, and face. The best thing we found to remove the paint is baby wipes! Whatever is in those wipes, must be some strong stuff, so I am not surprised that it is too harsh for some tender bottoms!

I do not have the Delphi list handy, but I though huggies baby wipes were listed on it as gluten-free.

Huggies, Luvs and Pampers wipes are gluten-free. I can't imagine wipes containing gluten.

Scotch tape is not a concern.

I contacted Pampers and Huggies recently because we wipe hands with wipes in the car before we eat, thus possible cross-contamination. Pampers stated that their wipes (all baby wipes and Kando kid wipes) are gluten-free. Huggies stated that their wipes (baby wipes and Pull Up Just for kids) may contain a trace a amount of gluten and thus they will not state that they are gluten-free. It may be a liability statement but since Pampers says they are gluten-free I buy Pampers. Tania Greenville, Pa

Hi

I have a 3year old

been doing this for 18+months !

you need to look everything your kid uses!

Craft stickers, crayons glue tape ext.!

Along with dish soap, dishwasher soap, lipstick makeup, any candy! Any thing they touch basically

Also make sure u have seperate non stick frying pans(if this is type u use ) stainless steel r fine seperate nonstick cookie sheets cake pans ect.( anything with non stick) Glass is fine! Any plastics that have peeling from mic could contaminate there food.

seperate toster

also have seperate condiments where crumb contamination ocours ex. butter cheese whiz, jam peanut butter ext.

Make sure Micorwave is clean every time u use for a celiac person

there are lists out there for just about anything, how ever double check ingredent lists when possible on product phone company! i would not use gluten products on there butt! My daughters skin breaks out! She used a home ade bar soup that used flour and her skin broke out!

Pampers wipes r gluten free! Im in the process of checking simply kids and kirkland!

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.

Open Food Facts is a free food database: https://world.openfoodfacts.org/discover  There's an app to access it which is also free (with no in app commercials).   You can use it to look up information about foods such as ingredients, Nova score (to help avoid ultra processed foods), environmental impact and nutritional scores, allergy related information and more.  It can scan a product's barcodes and bring up relevant information about that product.  The project relies on volunteers to share information about products.  We can add information on our favorite gluten free products to share with each other.  It has several gluten free items in the database already:  https://world.openfoodfacts.org/cgi/search.pl?search_terms=gluten+free&search_simple=1&action=process  I think it could make a great tool for people with celiac.
