Itching!

I am new at the gluten free diet, having been diagnosed with celiacs disease about a month ago. I have read that many people with celiacs disease also have a problem with milk. I am wondering if anyone could give me some insite or has had the same problem as me. Before being diagnosed with celiacs disease, I had rashes and my body itched all over all the time. I went on a gluten free/lactose free diet. The itches and rash disappeared. I started drinking milk again and a week later I am having the same problem with the itching and rashes. Does anyone know if milk can do that? Does anyone else have this issue? Or would the itching and rashes possibly be from something else?

Hi,

I know what you mean to itching all the time.. I am the same way... I was diagnosied about 6 weeks ago with Celiac...

Two years ago is when I had DH but at that time I did not know what it was other then an allergic reaction... It happened on my right knee while at work and boy did it burn, itch and sting all together... I had big welts on my knee so I made a dr appt right away and got off work early...

Even though I have been gluten free for about 6 weeks I am still tired all time and I still itch but without the big welts... I do have small rashes on my shoulders and parts of my arms...

Actually I don't remember itching this bad before I went Gluten free...

I'm like you and am not sure of what or why...

Sorry as for milk I'm not sure since I am fairly new like you but I would not put it past the milk to make you itch since you already have Celiac... There are a lot of blogs out there that can give you all kinds of info... You can also go to ask.com and see if you can find out...

Hope this helps

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.

Welcome to the gluten-free community! It’s great to have you here. While gluten sensitivity or celiac disease can indeed cause skin issues, such as dermatitis herpetiformis (a blistering rash), abscesses in areas like the lower buttocks or thighs are less commonly linked directly to gluten. However, chronic abscesses could be a sign of an underlying immune or inflammatory condition, which might be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Some people with gluten-related disorders also experience secondary issues like bacterial overgrowth or immune dysregulation, which could potentially contribute to recurrent infections. It’s always a good idea to explore all possible causes, including gluten sensitivity, with your doctor. In the meantime, keeping a food and symptom diary might help identify any patterns. Wishing you the best on your health journey!

You say you have gluten sensitivity? Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease or do you refer to NCGS?
