Question About Pattern Of Diarrhea

I would like to know if anyone else has a similar pattern to their diarrhea. Mine is usually at night after going to sleep. I call it a triple whammy. At midnight, or soon after, it starts and I get watery diarrhea three times within about 20 minutes. Sometimes the triple whammy is an hour or so after eating but more often around midnight. It feels like some poison is being expelled by my body. Also does anyone know why it would happen at that time? It usually comes again starting around 6 A.M but it is not a triple whammy. I rarely get the diarrhea in the daytime. It is now about 7 or 8 times a day per 24 hours. Is this typical of gluten intolerance/celiac disease?

This pattern could be suggestive of Microscopic Colitis. I would mention it to your gastro.

So after midnight is typical of microscopic colitis and not celiac? Do you know why it happens at that time and not in the daytime?

Why would it get better on a gluten free diet? I was great for about a month or more two months after going gluten free. No midnight diarrhea at all except it was usually still watery.

I don't know why it tends to happen at night/early in the morning, but it is a common symptom. My gastro told me that it's associated with Celiac, although you can certainly have one without the other.

Have you had testing for Celiac? MC is diagnosed by biopsying samples of tissue from the large intestine during a colonoscopy.

I have not been able to get an appointment with a gastro. I was referred by my GP on April 30th, but I have not had a call with an appointment. My GP would not test me for celiac. He said I was too old to have it. Anyway the tests would probably be negative as I have been gluten free for six months.

It's unfortunate that your GP wouldn't test you, and of course he's wrong about your being too old to have Celiac. (things like this make me so mad....) You are right though, the test would probably come back negative since you are already gluten-free.

Still, if it were me I would go ahead with an appointment with the gastro when you can and discuss this with them.

Thanks. That's what I am waiting for, but I don't understand why it is taking so long.

I would probably cut out all other typical high allergy foods in the meantime, soy, dairy, etc, to see if you can improve your symptoms and get some sleep before you get to see your doctor.

Yes it is. My clueless GI after I was diagnosed asked me why I hadn't told him I was waking up nightly with D. I had of course told him but he was so convinced I had IBS that he wasn't listening. I would also have D daily as well, usually right after or even during a meal.

Funny you should mention sleep. I haven't had a good night's sleep for a long time. One morning after being in the bathroom 8 times between midnight and 6 A.M I was so out of it that I think I forgot to rinse the conditioner out of my hair as it was all sticky after I dried it. I even used someone else's toothbrush.

You've heard of the midnight ride of Paul Revere. Well I call my nightly adventures the midnight runs of diarrhea.

You poor thing! Although it does take time to get relief after going on the gluten-free diet, it's entirely possible for us to have something else going on. I hope you can get in to see the specialist and get to the bottom of this. Keep us posted.

Anyone try this? No matter what the brand, probiotics have ALWAYS made me break out bad. I am hesitant to try this simply for that fact, but I ordered a 3 month supply. Any input would be appreciated. Wish me luck.

@llisa, I am curious to know how much vitamin D you are taking and what is your plasma level in nmol/L or ng/ml what the doctor's target 25(OH)D is. Hopefully with the gluten free diet you'll be able to feel better.

Yes, but if you had been avoiding bread because of the stricture, that might explain the negative result of the previous celiac antibody test.

Hashimoto diagnosed over 20 years ago after my daughter was diagnosed and told me to get checked due to similar symptoms. Diabetes diagnosed same time. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency this past summer. Celiac last Wednesday. Have been having the digestive issues for a couple of years, several doctors--thought we had it solved with the Creon. Then symptoms got worse. I have a theory about that. I have a stricture in my esophagus that has to be dilated every 6-8 months. When it is tight, I have trouble swallowing. Bread is one of the harder things to swallow, so I avoid it. Had the stricture stretched end of October and started eating bread again. That's about when the diarrhea, bloating, gas, and pain started getting worse. Went in for another upper endoscopy and dilation of stricture last week. (It had been so tight this time, he scheduled a second dilation one month after the first.)  I told him how miserable I'd been, and he did the small intestine biopsy. I know they did the blood test for celiac about a year or more ago trying to find source of my problems,  and it was negative.

Diabetes and Hashimoto's as well, huh? You are the epitome of the autoimmune cascade effect. That is, once you get one autoimmune condition you tend to develop others. But I am curious. In the sequence of these several autoimmune diagnoses, where did the celiac diagnosis come? You certainly have a lot of health issues to juggle.
