Gluten Free Bars

I've been looking for gluten free bars for my 3 yo to snack on or to take on trips. We've tried a couple that we like, so I thought I would share the info in case others are interested.

Larabars are almost all gluten free and are made primarily from ground nuts, dried fruit, coconut. They have no added sugar and are "unprocessed. My daughter really liked the chocolate coconut chew. At least I felt like she was eating something nutritious! I found them at a local health food store, but you can order them directly from the company. Open Original Shared Link

Revival Soy makes a number of gluten free products, including bars. We tried the Autumn Apple Frost which is really a lot like a candy bar (it's frosted). They have some unfrosted varieties as well. They also make soy chips which are gluten free. We tried the BBQ Bliss. I thought the chips were too expensive to buy on a regular basis. These products are only sold directly from the company, not in stores. I emailed them about the source of Malt in their bars. Here is their response:

Our malt does not have gluten in it because it is not derived from barley. We’ve checked with our supplier of malt and they have assured us that it is not derived from barley, thus it does not contain any gluten. Sorghum and corn are two other common sources of malt.

Both these bars are about $2 a piece which I think is expensive, but they are nice to have for trips or for afternoons at the park.

Has anyone else tried other bars they enjoy? Please reply with your recommendations.

I love Lara Bars - really like the chocolate one and the cherry pie one.

Here are some I like a lot, some have protein, others not.

Open Original Shared Link

My favorite is the chocolate chip one. The ingredients are:

Organic Almond Butter, Organic Date Paste, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Chocolate Chips - Non-Dairy (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Cocoa Butter, Non-GMO Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Bean), Organic Brown Rice Protein, Organic Flax Sprouts, Organic Raisins, Organic Quinoa Sprouts, Organic Sesame Seeds and Lots of Love!

10 Grams of Healthy Fats/12 Grams of Protein No Trans Fatty Acids No Refined Sugars/2000mg Of Phytonutrient Rich Sprouts

The Active Greens ones have wheat and barley in them (sprouted) so I would definitely avoid those.

I also like Oskri Coconut Bar with Almonds

Open Original Shared Link

The Almond one is just:

coconut, brown rice syrup, and natural almond flavor.

A new one I just found is Thinkorganic Open Original Shared Link

I have the Chocolate Coconut 100% organic snack bar. It is a lot like the chocolate Lara Bar but a little sweeter. It contains:

organic dates, organic raw cashews, organic raw almonds, organic unsweetened coconut, organic coca (processed with alkali).

The Organic Food Bars are best for protein but all three are tasty and say Gluten Free right on the label. (Only ding on the Organic Food Bar - it says "no soy" when it obviously has soy lecithin in the chocolate chips... Sigh.

SUMMARY FOR GLUTEN FREE CEREAL BAR, GLUTEN FREE PROTEIN BAR, GLUTEN FREE SNACK BAR, GLUTEN FREE GRANOLA TYPE BARS

APRIL 29, 2005

Hello List,

Thanks for all of your replies in my quest to locate some gluten free cereal bar/protein bar, granola bar, snack bar types of foods.  I was overwhelmed with the 57 replies that came in.  Thanks to all of you who sent comments and recipes.  Some of you included nice compliments which were greatly appreciated.  In an effort to simplify the list, I have compiled an alphabetical list and indicated how many “votes” each item received.  If there were any specific comments that you sent, I have added them below each brand name.  Please keep in mind that these are products that were recommended.  Some of them may contain oats or other ingredients that your particular diet may not allow.  Use this list as a guideline only, and always verify ingredient labels for yourself.  As for me, it looks like I have tons of options for hiking, snacking, or whatever.  Now… to see which of these gluten-free bars will get our daughter to do the gluten free dance.  (in other words, enjoy them….)  As always, you are always welcome to email me directly at OneSillyYak@yahoo.com and ask me to email you a copy of the file.  ~Melonie

ENVIRO KIDZ BARS – 7 VOTES

1)For cereal bars, I keep a couple of boxes of Envirokids Crispy Rice Bars handy.  I have had both the Peanut Butter and the Chocolate but the PB is my favorite.  I know it is probably devoid of nutrition, but they are handy to throw in my purse for emergency snacking.  These say gluten free.

2)I've been snacking on bicycle rides with Envirokidz, an organic crispy rice bar.  I buy the berry flavor but it comes in chocolate and one othe flavor.  It has 21 grams of carbohydrates, but does not seem to give me the lift or endurance energy that a gluten bagel would, but it's the best I can eat. It tastes good and is only 110 calories.  On a long ride I suppose I could eat two and see if they will last longer.  I'll be anxious to see what others have found.

3)We do also eat the Envirokidz Crispy Rice Bars.  Everyone in our family has a different favorite, so I know they must all be good.  The Envirokidz rice bars from Nature's Path are great!  All three kinds; chocolate, peanut butter and berry.

4)Nature's Path EnviroKidz has a cereal bar that comes in three flavors - berry, chocolate, & peanut butter. They are really good, but a little on the sweet side.

5)EnviroKidz - Organic Crispy Rice Bar – Berry

6)I recently found some EnviroKidz granola bars in the grocery store.  So far I have only tried the peanut butter.  They are good but not great. They are good for traveling or keeping at the office for those afternoon munchies.

GENISOY  - 5 VOTES

1) Chunky Peanut Butter Fudge is gluten free - however, it is very dense - I didn't care for it at all.

2) The Genisoy Creamy Yogurt (peanut butter, I think) is also gluten free - I didn't try that one though.  I also buy the GeniSoy Southern Style Chunky Peanut Butter Fudge protein bar.  These are very nutritious but also high in calories.  I cut them in half and store in a snack baggie.  These are also good for emergency snacking.  These were on a list of gluten free items I once saw.  I have been purchasing them since but I'm a silent celiac so I can't tell you if they bother me or not.

3) My very favorite is the Chunky Peanut Butter Fudge soy protein bar.  It's yummy!

4) GeniSoy Extreme - Peanut Butter Fix

GLUTINO BERRY BARS  - 5 VOTES

LARABARS – 17 VOTES

1) I tried Larabars because people said they were great, but the banana tasted nasty and the apple pie barely tasted like apples.  They're made from a date base and it seemed that there wasn't much else in them...just too overpowering, and I love dates.

2) I  like Larabars.  www.larabar.com.

3) Hi!  LARABAR has great gluten-free bars.  Flavors include Cashew Cookie, Ginger Snap,  Apple Pie, Chocolate Coconut Chew, Cherry Pie and a few others.  I love them  all but the Cashew Cookie is my favorite.  I keep one in my purse all the time in case I get hungry and am somewhere that I can't get something to eat right away.

4) They are Great!  -  As far as our family is concerned, the all-time best bars of any kind is the  Larabars.

5) There is nothing like them.

6)I am a big fan of LARABAR distributed from HUMM FOODS, INC.

7)  LaraBars are more like a power bar.

8) The LaraBar is the only one I eat. It has no additives.  There are  several flavors but the cashew and dates is my favorite. Cashews and  dates are its only ingredients.

Larabars are excellent. They come in lots of flavors.  They are made in Boulder, CO. and Whole Foods carries them as well as health food stores.  Our supermarket here in CO. carries them. I bought a mixed box from Larabar and they were all excellent.  Good flavor, texture and best of all no reaction.  Lara Bar: all flavors. I esp. like the cherry pie. Open Original Shared Link.

9) I just recently tried them and loved the taste. I've only tried the apple pie and cherry pie, both were delicious and I can't wait to try their other flavors! They were awesome and they are considered a raw food bar. Here is their web site:  Open Original Shared Link.  My local health food store carries them... I just wish they were a tad cheaper... $2.19 per

bar... but very tasty and satisfying. My favorite flavor is Cherry Pie! They also come in Apple Pie, Cashew Cookie, and Banana somthing... which tastes like banana bread!

10) These are good, but not all are gluten-free.

ORGANIC FOOD BARS  - 4 VOTES

1)I like Organic Food Bars original and almond flax.  They have no preservatives, additives, coatings, soy, peanuts, dairy, or gluten.  The  active green flavor does have wheat grass juice powder and barley grass juice powder which I am not sure I want to try but it is labeled the same as above.

2)Organic Food bar: all flavors. I usually eat the Original organic food bar  Open Original Shared Link

3)Organic Food Bar.  I do avoid the ones made with wheat grass and barley grass juice powder. The company claims the grasses are gluten-free. It is my understanding that glutenfreeliving newsletter is investigating if wheat and barley grass are gluten free and plan to publish the results in the future. Until then, I'm playing it safe and only eating the ones without the wheat and barley grass. Here is the web site for more info: Open Original Shared Link.

4)BioInternational (www.organicfoodbar.com)  organic snack bars

ORGRAN – 2 VOTES

1)I use Orgran Fruit Filled Blueberry bars - they are like cereal bars made with chickpea flour.  They also make an Apricot flavor but I haven't tried that one.  I also just tried Glutino - Apple Breakfast Bars.  Both taste "ok" - kind of like fig newtons. I'm looking forward to your summary - i have had a very hard time finding gluten-free bars that are not  loaded with fat/sugar/preservatives/artificial flavors/colors etc.

CEREAL BAR/GRANOLA BAR/POWER BAR/PROTEIN BAR gluten-free RECIPES:

Recipe #1: “No Bake Granola Bars”

This is an excellent gluten-free granola bar recipe that I got at a local gluten-free cooking class last fall.  I have been gluten-free since June 2004.

Ingredients:

4 C (crushed) gluten-free Corn Flakes Cereal (an entire 10.6 oz box)

1 1/2 C sliced almonds, roughly chopped

1 C chopped dried fruit = (1) 7oz package of Sunmaid Fruit Bits

1 C peanut butter

3/4 C light corn syrup

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

·        Spray a 15x10 jelly roll pan (or cookie sheet with a lip) with gluten-free vegetable oil spray.

·        In a large bowl blend the cereal, almonds, chocolate chips and dried fruit.

·        In a small saucepan, combine the peanut butter and corn syrup.

·        Cook, stirring constantly, until hot and smooth, about 5 minutes.

·        Pour the hot syrup over the cereal mix and blend well.

·        Press mixture into the prepared pan.

·        Refrigerate for about 15 minutes or let stand an hour or so.

·        Cut into bars.

·        Makes about 4 dozen depending on the size of the bar.

·        You can wrap individually and freeze in a Ziploc bag if desired

Recipe #2: Gluten Free Cereal Bars:

We make cereal bars following the rice krispy treat recipe, however, we add Carnation instant breakfast, about 1/4-1/2 cup and about 1/2-1 cup of peanut butter to make them a little more nutritious.  The kids love them and these bars are good for breakfast

Recipe #3:  Gluten Free Bible Bars:

Ingredients:

1 cup I Samuel 30:12 (raisins)

Amos 4:8 (water)

1/2 cup Leviticus 3:9 (shortening)

1 cup Jeremiah 6:20 (granulated sugar)

1 Isaiah 10:14 (egg)

2 cups Exodus 29:2 (flour) – USE GLUTEN FREE FLOUR MIXTURE

1 teaspoon Exodus 13:7 (baking powder)

1 teaspoon II Chronicles 9:9 (cinnamon)

1 teaspoon I Kings 10:10 (nutmeg)

1 teaspoon Luke 23:56 (allspice)

1/2 teaspoon Exodus 13:3 (baking soda)

1/2 teaspoon Leviticus 2:13 (salt)

1 cup Numbers 17:8, chopped (almonds)

Directions:

Cook raisins in water; drain, saving 3/4 cup of liquid for later use.

Mix together shortening, sugar and egg.

Combine remaining ingredients and add the raisins and the 3/4 cup of reserved liquid. Follow the directions in Jeremiah 7:18.

Bake 20 minutes in a greased jellyroll pan at 350 degrees F. Frost if desired.

MISCELLANEOUS COMMENTS:

1)  Thank you for putting this list together.  I have Luna bars but not Lara bars locally.  Would you please see if you can locate Lara bars?  I've heard they're really good and I'm not sure the Luna bars are truly gluten-free.

2)  As you can probably guess, I prefer my "power" type bars to be nutrition, not just a bar type cookie disguised as health food. The ones I eat may not be the most popular brands but they are delicious AND good for you

fatherof4yearold Rookie

We have actually been giving my son Slim Fast as his bed time drink to increase his calories and vitamin intake, plus he loves the chocolate milkshake drink. Also he like the Enviro Kids choclate bars, also we get the Quaker rice crisps, I like the apple and my son likes the chocolate. We put peanut butter on the rice crackers nice thing is they stay crunch much better then regular crackers.

We used to give him Carb Solutions breakfast bars which he loved but we can't find them anymore.

megzmc3611 Rookie

I too love the Lara Bars. I usually get them at Whole Foods. However, the other day while I was at Trader Joes I saw the Lara Bars for $1.69!! Whole Foods charges $2.49 (or somewhere around that price). I was pleasantly surprised at the price difference!

The Cashew Cookie and Chocolate Coconut Lara Bars are delicious!

Sure :). To be more personal than a copy and paste...I've tried the Lara Bars and like them. I also like the Genisoy bars (most aren't gluten-free, though, so you have to call).

I have to go gluten-free and CF, which makes it a bit tougher. I tend to stick to Larabars, Organic Food Bars, and recently tried the ThinkOrganic bars. All are good. Of course, I prefer my homemade cranberry/hemp ones best. ;-)

I love the Larabars, they are so yummy!

My daughter loves the Envirokids bars.

We've tried the Glutino bars and they are just "eh, ok"

Does "CF" mean casein free? And what does that do to your body if you consume it? I'm just curious because I've seen that around.

celiac3270 Collaborator

Yes, it means casein free

tarnalberry Community Regular

Yep, casein free, no really really nothing with dairy. (Sometimes people on here report that they've been told they can still have yogurt or cheese. Nu-uh. Casein is the protein in milk, and the process of making yogurt or cheese, while it does lower the levels of the milk sugar lactose because the bacterial enzymes or rennet consumes it in its metabolic process, does nothing to the amount of protein in the product. In fact, because the sugars are consumed, the percentage by weight of protein (which is primarily casein in milk) goes up! I hate it when people get that bad advice.)

Anyway... last time I tested it (through an elimination diet), I got a bit funny-headed (don't know if I'd call it brain fog, or just dizziness), headache, cranky, a stomach ache, pain in the abdominal area, and looser stool. A similar reaction to my gluten reactions, but didn't last as long and didn't cause bourbourygmi (the noises in the intestines that sound like they're trying to talk...) and came on a bit quicker (two hours, nearly on the dot - pretty classic for IgG intolerances).

My understanding is that some IgG intolerances may come and go over time, particularly as the gut heals and foreign food proteins are no longer able to escape the intestines into the blood stream. I had been gluten-free for a year before trying the elimination diet, and had only inconclusive celiac results, so I'm not sure if this would work for me or not.

I eat the berry Envirokids bars, the ones with the baby cheetah on them! They are really good!

However, I can get them for $3.99 here in the grocery store.

Oh, @Yaya! Five years???  How awful for you to suffer so long! My Vitamin D came up in a matter of months.  High dose Vitamin D has been used in the past to correct rickets and is a safe method to correct Vitamin D deficiency.   I took 1000 IU several times a day, every day for several weeks.  I ate them like m&m's when I was severely deficient.  My brain craved them.  I felt so much better afterwards.  On maintenance dose now.  Yes, the craving went away as my level reached 80-95.   Ask your cardiologist about supplementing with.Benfotiamine.

@CeliacPsycho246, My OCD symptoms resolved after I took supplements of the active form of Pyridoxine B6 called P5P and L-Theanine, an amino acid.   Pyridoxine B6 is absorbed from foods or supplements and then must be changed to its active form.  P5P is the active form.  Inflammation and malabsorption can impede this process.  Taking the active form is beneficial because it is ready to be used immediately.   L-Theanine is a natural amino acid that helps immensely with anxiety.   Together these two supplements really work to relieve OCD. I like Life Extension brand of P5P, but there are others that are labeled gluten free, too.  L-Theanine is found in chocolate, but as much as I love chocolate, Theanine  supplements work better.   Hope you are open to trying these as a stop-gap until your doctor's appointment.  Keep us posted on your results.

You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
