Does Anybody Else Have These Symptoms...

i'm not sure that i have celiac because i was never formally tested, though i did a home saliva test last year that came up negative.

i have been off gluten for over 20 years, so this question may relate mainly to long-timers.

the reaction to going off gluten was so dramatic for me that i just assumed i had celiac, or that it didn't matter because i was never going to have it again (though this past year after 20 years away from it i can handle some now)

the doctor who initially turned me onto the whole gluten issue was one of those pre-atkins, paleo diet types. after two days of going off of gluten, grains, and dairy i began to pass really hard dry stools which would get me somewhat constipated.

it took me a few years to realize that these stools were not what i was eating but my small intestine shedding off all old accumulated waste or impactions from a life time of gluten and dairy. i am just curious if this same thing happened to other people regarding the stools. i have read about 'damage' to the small intestine and that it requires time to 'heal', but i am curious about the specific nature of this. for me these hard stools have not stopped in over 20 years of gluten free. if i go back on dairy or gluten i just get sort of mushy/mucousy stool.

i have read that the small intestine has an enormous capacity to store waste as its surface area is roughly the same size as a tennis court.

there is more to the story but i just wanted to see if other celiacs have the same symptoms.

Hi! I have the same symptom. From the minute I had stoped to eat gluten the constipation started. I'm drinking a lot of water everyday, eating fruit and vegetable 5 times a day, but nothing is helping yet. Right now I can't eat also any fat. Maybe that is the reason why. Who know? Another thing that I can think of is Nexium 40mg which I'm taking for my acid reflux, and the constipation is mentioned in the side effects.

I also don't know what it means.

well that is really rough for you because fats are about the only thing that helped me long term to move the impaction through the gut.

gosh... idk... could it be the rest of your diet causing this?? r u eating enough good stuff? or JUST going gluten free? are u taking medications? or even Iron?

hhmmm - u may also want to experiment with Ghee & L-Glutamine- they help your small intestine work better- and gives u "smooth" results if u know what i mean ;)

other than that- i cant relate.... wheat & gluten give me Constipation AND the D.

Welcome to the forum, @Jaylan! Almost all of the symptoms and medical conditions you describe have been found to be associated with celiac disease. But they can also be caused by other things as well. There certainly is enough circumstantial evidence in your list of medical problems to warrant being tested for celiac disease. Ask your physician to order a celiac panel consisting of, at the very minimum, these two blood antibody tests: total IGA and tTG-IGA. Please do not attempt to limit your gluten intake before the blood draw is taken or you will invalidate the testing. Incidentally, celiac disease is often misdiagnosed as IBS.

Hi there!  I’ve recently been tested for celiac disease, along with other autoimmune diseases. My symptoms started back in 2018 with joint pain in my knees. Since then, it has progressively worsened. I now have joint pain in both knees, elbows, and sometimes my shoulders. The pain is almost unbearable. I feel so stiff in the mornings, and this stiffness can last the whole day. I also experience swelling and warmth around those areas.   Other symptoms include IBS (diagnosed at age 16), restless legs, chest pain, tiredness, miscarriages, bloating, and sharp pain on the right side of my stomach. In the past, I’ve also had problems with a vitamin D deficiency, and my serum folate levels recently came back very low.   My question is: How likely is it that I have celiac disease?

The Celebrity brand Luncheon Loaf (found at dollar tree, distributed by Atalanta Corporation) is gluten free according to the distributor. I emailed their customer service line for information on the ingredients, and they contacted the vendor and followed up with me that the "starch" ingredient I was worried about is corn and potato. It should be safe.
