Elimination Diet - Symtoms Getting Worse?

Hi All!

I've had chronic constant and pretty severe headaches for three years that just started out of the blue one day. I've been to all the docs and have had all the tests done...and they all say I'm healthy...but I don't feel healthy. My nervous system is also out of wack and I get nervous very easily/anxious. I am seeing a chiropractor who specializes in headaches and who thought I might have a gluten intolerence. Well thanks to Enterolab, I do have a gluten intolerence along with soy, dairy, yeast, and eggs. I eliminated gluten and dairy from my diet about 5-6 weeks ago with NO relief. When the test results came back from Enterolab with the other intolerences, I cut those out this past Sunday. Monday and Tuesday I had even worse headaches than normal...and Weds the headache wasn barely any better. But today (Thursday) my head is KILLING me and I have sore gooky eyes and feel like CRAP. I'm sure this is a withdrawal symptom of some kind, but feel like my head will literally explode.

Does anyone else have a similar story? How long did you have to go off of gluten/other foods before you saw an improvement in your symptoms? I hear it can take 3-6 months for improvement. So far...I am skeptical that this is what's causing my headaches since I've been gluten-free for 5+ weeks.

Please share your stories with me so I don't think I'm the only one experiencing this stuff!

Thanks! - Jen

I don't. sorry. But I feel for you and hope you find out. A lot of people who get headaches that don't go away have a problem with caffein or aspertame. And also, people who take a pain reliver over and over can develop headaches that don't quit. I saw a guy on 20/20 who had headaches daily for 6 years and was taking like 15-10 Ibuprofins a day or something. So he went to a holistic health practitioner and had to ween himself off of the pain killer and do some kind of holistic pain relief at a clinic that specialized in that sort of thing. I don't know what that entailed, but here in central CT, there are chronic pain groups at the hospital where people learn deep breathing techniques and yoga and that sort of thing. Good luck, sending wishes you find out

Welcome to the forum, @Jaylan! Almost all of the symptoms and medical conditions you describe have been found to be associated with celiac disease. But they can also be caused by other things as well. There certainly is enough circumstantial evidence in your list of medical problems to warrant being tested for celiac disease. Ask your physician to order a celiac panel consisting of, at the very minimum, these two blood antibody tests: total IGA and tTG-IGA. Please do not attempt to limit your gluten intake before the blood draw is taken or you will invalidate the testing. Incidentally, celiac disease is often misdiagnosed as IBS.

Hi there!  I’ve recently been tested for celiac disease, along with other autoimmune diseases. My symptoms started back in 2018 with joint pain in my knees. Since then, it has progressively worsened. I now have joint pain in both knees, elbows, and sometimes my shoulders. The pain is almost unbearable. I feel so stiff in the mornings, and this stiffness can last the whole day. I also experience swelling and warmth around those areas.   Other symptoms include IBS (diagnosed at age 16), restless legs, chest pain, tiredness, miscarriages, bloating, and sharp pain on the right side of my stomach. In the past, I’ve also had problems with a vitamin D deficiency, and my serum folate levels recently came back very low.   My question is: How likely is it that I have celiac disease?

The Celebrity brand Luncheon Loaf (found at dollar tree, distributed by Atalanta Corporation) is gluten free according to the distributor. I emailed their customer service line for information on the ingredients, and they contacted the vendor and followed up with me that the "starch" ingredient I was worried about is corn and potato. It should be safe.
