Losing More Weight

I was 144 last month and now i'm 139. eating high calorie foods and a lot of fruit helps me maintain my weight but when i eat those foods they bloat me up terribly. I also cant exert myself too much cause it causes indigestion & then i can barely eat. any suggestions? hard to believe i once weighed 163 lbs, lifted weights daily and played ice hockey competitively...I feel like a frail old man now and am just withering away :)

What exactly are the "high calorie" foods you are consuming? It sounds to me like there may still be a problem here. have you checked your thyroid at all?

all my blood work was fine back in January except my liver ALT which was a bit elevated. havent rechecked yet

high calorie foods that i eat are lara bars, pecans, avocados and olive oil...thats pretty much it and they arent even that high in calories. avocados are clearly not sitting well with me so i had to eliminate them

Hmmm...maybe enzyme deficiency? How are you with meats and other starches like potatoes? I've read some of your other posts and I know this has been a long stressful battle for you. I hope you figure it out and start feeling healthy soon.

Are you working with a therapist yet? Is your job still as stressful as it was?

All of your posts sound stressed - full of worry and fear and stress. And chronic stress does harsh things to the body, physiologically. Just one of the ways they manifest is in digestive symptoms. (Real ones, not "imagining a stomach ache", but altering levels of serotonin in the digestive system, which plays an important role keeping things running smoothly, as it were.)

You may want to consider a life change big enough to really reduce your stress levels. Yes, there is stress involved in that, and it takes a lot of courage, but it can make all the difference in the world. When I got laid off, and we moved to one income, that was stressful. Adding a baby to the mix has also been stressful. But it's a kind of stress that I can handle, and there is - overall - less of it. So that, even off meds now for over a year, I have not had a return of my chronic migraines or a major fibromyalgia flare. (Those were my manifestations of chronic stress.) Living much slower and more simply (though I wouldn't say all that simply) can make a huge difference, and quite honestly, I like it much better.

I use to be 215 lbs 3 1/2 year ago. Then within a space of 6 weeks, I dropped down to 123 - 124 lbs range and all the flesh went away from my body. I did not try to loose it, it just happened on it own. You may be like me and never, ever get it back to its old self again. The only way, I can explain it is that my old weight was not healty weight. Once, I went on the gluten-free diet. All that extra fat on the body went went away. Then, my true weight appeared. I remember when I was just 17 years old and, I only weight 125 lbs soaken wet. At a heigth of 5 feet 11 inch tall.

I found that my fat digestion was almost non existent at first. A good digestive enzyme really helps break down the fats, especially since you are using olive oil and avocado. that would have made me sick as a dog. i started off slowly just with the fat from lean meats such as chicken and filet mignon. small amounts with a veggie and a potato. i would drizzle evoo on my veggie and potato and some salt. darn good

Are you grain free or no carb? If you can do carby things like potatoes, rice and corn or other gluten free grains you should eat more of those for your "high calorie" foods. Carbs convert to sugar and help add pounds in most people. Avocado, olive oil and nuts are high fat, but they also recommended for weight loss by some diets. Those types of fats are good for you in small quantities, but not if you have liver or gall bladder problems. When I had a gall bladder I could not eat high fat foods, even the "good" fats without issues. I also couldn't tolerate spicy foods. I gained weight mainly because I stuck to bland (gluten laden back then) foods like pasta, crackers and bread with a some plain veggies. Now I am able to eat more meats and try to avoid too many carbs and I'm slowly losing weight (I need to lose weight). Maybe this doesn't hold true for all people, but if the diet you are trying right now is mostly fats and not much carbs you could try adding more carbs to gain weight.

I think you know why you can't gain weight. You said "eating high calorie foods and a lot of fruit helps me maintain my weight but when i eat those foods they bloat me up terribly". That sounds like you resist eating those foods, because they make you uncomfortable. You mentioned in a later post that "high calorie foods that i eat are lara bars, pecans, avocados and olive oil...thats pretty much it and they arent even that high in calories. avocados are clearly not sitting well with me so i had to eliminate them" You didn't mention meats or other fat sources. Do those also cause indigestion? What about gluten free grains and/or starches? What DO you eat? If you can only eat a few lower calorie foods, you're on a weight loss, rather than a weight gain diet.

If you can't eat higher calorie foods without getting indigestion, you might consider what you can do about the indigestion. The more foods you cut from your diet, because they cause indigestion, the less likely you will gain weight or even maintain your weight. Rather than worry about weight, worry about why you can't digest the foods you need.

      Those are great points and some follow up thoughts and ideas. I think you're both stating the same thing in two different ways, but I appreciate the "accuracy" of what you're getting to.   1. Are you both stating that the "too salty of a taste" could be triggered by a histamine reaction, and the flavor is coming from the electrolytes? If that is the case, wouldn't the individuals mouth always be salty during a "Glutening" situation, or are we saying that the person could get "use to the flavor" until introducing food or beverage and that could be enough to "stir the pot" and notice the salty flavor? 2. To push back on "#1": If that were true anyone with issues of histamine releasing foods/treatments would experience the same thing. Also, I did not experience a situation where most beverages were "too salty". Thoughts?

      The only vegetable sources of B12 are some fermented bean products using a certain microbiotic culture. It is next to impossible to get adequate B12 from vegetable sources without supplementation. Same with D3. Some mushrooms can make D3 when exposed to UV light. Are you vegetarian or vegan? Do you do dairy and eggs or no animal products at all? Low B12 and D3 could definitely cause or contribute to many of the symptoms you have been experiencing but would not cause celiac disease. It is more likely the other way around, especially if you are a vegetarian eating no animal products. Many of your symptoms seem neurological in nature.       Russ, can you link an article supporting your assertion that small amounts of gliadin are detectable in human breast milk? Not doubting you but it would be nice to have the whole text for reference.

      Got it. Thanks Scott. I'll set up an appointment with a GI after the holidays and get all the celiac disease screening done. Thanks to this amazing forum and to all who have answered my question, I now know what my next steps are.
