Severe Gluten Withdrawals

I have suffered from severe Chronic Fatigue for more years than I can remember. I went on a course over two years ago which involved things like meditation, NLP, and the like. It also recommended a dairy free and gluten free diet. I recovered really quickly, after 2 or 3 months I felt great but I didn't ever think the recovery had to do with going gluten free. From that point on I very gradually went back onto gluten food and very gradually my fatigue came back, I completely gave up the gluten-free diet a few months ago and my fatigue became intense. I finally got around to wondering if it was in fact the gluten which was causing my problems and on the 21st of August I went onto a total gluten free diet. First 5 days nothing happened and then I started with awful withdrawals, flu like symptoms, headaches, aching muscles and night sweats and general malaise. It lasted for 5 weeks and then died down. Since then I have had another 3 bouts of withdrawals lasting for 3 or 4 days. I am just recovering from the last one. Overall I am getting a bit more energy but I've a long way to go to feeling good. Anyone know how long these withdrawals can last?

I would check all of your foods and make sure you are not getting gluten from anywhere and you might want to just skip processed foods for a while. Some people react to very small amounts of gluten. It is possible that you might be reacting to something else like dairy, corn or soy, just to name a few.

Something you might want to do is get your vitamin levels checked. It may be that you are low on some of them. Vit D comes to my mind first because I went through the same thing. I also started taking B complex, fish oil and the D along with eating gluten-free, I have felt so much better. I can actually work around my house again instead of taking naps all day.

you might also wanna see your doc for a checkup- many of us had to correct b12 or D deficiencies, or thyroid problems.. and as above poster said- there may be additional intolerances like soy dairy and corn

As I mentioned, gluten intolerance encompasses more than just those with celiac disease, and in the past was used more like the term "gluten sensitivity" is used today.

By the way, have you been diagnosed with celiac disease, and if so, are you on a 100% gluten-free diet?

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.
