Joint And Muscle Pain

I have been having a lot of joint and muscle pain. I have been taking Kung Fu classes for over 2 years. I have never been a really good athlete, but kung fu has helped me a lot. However, I now wonder if all my joint and muscle pain is related more to having Celiac than just Kung Fu. Yes, the classes are intense, but I really don't think I should be having this much pain related to the classes. I have always wondered when the pain will go away, and I've always thought it was just because I need to be in better shape.

I love Kung Fu, but I don't know how much longer I can do it. I've been gluten free for almost a month, except for the week before my biopsy. Do you think the pain will lessen after being on the diet for a longer period of time?

Do you think it's unhealthy for me to keep going if I am in pain? I just have mixed feelings about it. I don't want to make more problems for my joints by exercising so hard. But, exercise is good for us!

Any suggestions?

I'm kinda in the same boat in wondering how much exercise is good for you when newly recovering. I'm only two months in. But I am not made of the kind of stuff you are. If it hurts I just quit!! No but seriously I decided that walking and stretching is enough for now. I don't know if you can damage things or help them with vigorous Kung Fu exercise, but I'm giving my joints a break from any strenuous stuff prolly for 6 months. I will be curious to see what others say. On the muscles, I found that I still kinda hurt when I wasn't eating enough protein like when I first started the diet. Others say that Potatos (nightshade) can contribute to joint pain. Just learning myself, but had a couple of thoughts.

I agree with eatmeat4good that probably a less strenuous form of exercise for a couple of months at least would give your joints some relief and a chance to heal. Not that I'm suggesting you stop completely, but walking (on a treadmill if your climate is not good this time of year) or cycling would keep things moving without over exerting. Your body is in healing mode and you need to be a little kind to it for a while if you can. It will probably let you know when it's ready for morel; right now it doesn't sound very happy. Three weeks gluten free is not very long in the healing time frame, when you consider how long it took you to get where you are. :)

I just was diagnosed and waiting on my biopsy so I can't answer about pain lessoning. (I am hoping the answer is yes for both of us!) If you are in that much pain I would consider taking a break (or cutting back) but I know I would have a hard time taking a long break...I do jujutsu, battojutsu and ice hockey and they are my sanity savers. Can you call your doctor and ask?

I wonder if that kind of joint pain, can you make it worse by doing activities? Or if it's like arthritis where the more you use your joints the more it improves joint function?

I hope you start feeling better soon and also can continue with Kung Fu.

I do think the pain will lessen some after you go completely Gluten Free & root out all the sources of contamination & food sensitivities. One of my big culprits I discovered was corn. I took it out of my diet for 2 weeks. My joint pain really lessened (esp in my right hand where it feels like arthritis) I did a test yesterday and ate some gluten free popcorn at the movie (was free) and I was pleasantly surprised that I had no GI effects from the popcorn (this is new and wonderful) but last night I had pain in my right hand. It was so sore I had trouble opening & closing it and my knuckles were popping. So corn equals joint inflammation for me.

I don't think you should stop moving - whatever kind of activity it is you can tolerate - stay with it.

One side note... have you ever tried taking omega 3,6,9?? If you aren't allergic to citrus, you can get lemon flavored ones. My husband has knee pain & he takes 3 a day, one with each meal & swears by them. I noticed a difference with them too but I can't take them yet. They cause the big D :( I hope that'll change.

If you're female, joint pain can become worse around your monthly cycle. Mine generally worsens for a week and then lessens again.

Hang in there. If your joint pain is partially caused from inflammation, cleaning up your diet should help in 1-2 months.

I had joint and muscle pain that lessened for me after about 6 months-8 months. However I also had to cut out soy to see a big improvement in my joint pain. I agree with the others about doing some less intense excercise for a while. Swimming is a really great low impact excercise if you have access to a local pool. They often offer water aquatics classes. Maybe you could just switch to a water areobics class for a few months instead so you are still active but putting less stress on you joints.

      @trents I absolutely understand the perspective of getting off completely from wheat,  but sometimes situation may occur that you won't have choice to eat other than wheat,  my son travels a lot, since they travel in team, it's not easy to go out and find him a gluten free every single time! I have seen, even in NJ I m struggling to find out gluten free stuff, in this country we don't get fresh food in stores, other day i saw gluten free bread so hard that will never feel to eat it! Once in while means once in a while, when there is no absolute option. Here all goes by book, there is no enough scientific research done yet on eating gluten with celiac,  everyone has there own narrative,  only it being said don't eat wheat, but Noone has come up with the experience. And moreover my sons diagnosis is yet to define, whether he has celiac or NCGS. last time his endoscopy came negative hence doctor did not bother to tell us. I hope this time it will be the same case. We are figuring out why his billirubin is high, may be that could be the reason his igg iga test is high, will get check on all and come to the conclusion. My son and us is absolutely fine not eating gluten, but one can't guarantee that every time they will get the gluten free food other than home. I also don't trust under the table of "gluten free products" have see people still have same iga igg count even after following the diet. This is all learnings, will keep him under observation and go through the regular testing to find out how his body reacts to what.  I may sound like a fool, but medical is scam in US, hence i would consult doctors in India. 14 years ago they have announced i had a breast cancer, which was not, since then I don't trust medical system here.

      I've been to Italy recently for a wedding and it was excellent. I made my own gluten-free sandwiches/pannini to take on the flights.  Spain is good and you can get good gluten-free breads in the supermarkets there. The UK and Ireland are very good also. Australia would be good since Coeliac Disease is fairly common there ...1 in 70 as opposed to 1 in 100 in other countries. You have to advocate for yourself in restaurants when eating out. I've read about several Coeliacs being cross contaminated from preordered gluten-free meals on airlines. Personally, I wouldn't trust a gluten-free meal on an airline especially long haul. Try the hashtag celiactravel on tiktok and instagram. Loads of Coeliacs posting about their experiences with plenty travel tips. The Atly app has a list of gluten-free friendly restaurants worldwide.
