I am so tired of not feeling well and having flare ups! As I had said in a previous post, not all flare ups are caused by being glutened. What I have found is that many of these flare ups are now due to food sensitivities that I previously was unaware of until I stopped consuming gluten rich foods.

Sometimes with a gluten intolerance and food sensitivities, there may be other things at work such as IBD or IBS. Many times when you are experiencing fructose intolerance or issues with problems digesting nightshade foods - this may be caused by having IBS or IBD as well as gluten sensitivity or Celiac. If this is the case, then you have to be even more careful because even though the foods you eat are gluten free - that still is not a free parking pass when other gastro problems co-exist at the same time.

Also it gets hairy when you can eat certain foods but need to limit how much of it you eat. For example, the other day I ate a banana which I was doing okay with. That night I was so hungry that I ate one more banana. WRONG thing to do - my system went wild and I was up all night with diarrhea. I know I was not glutened - but I know that on top of getting sick when eating gluten - I also now get sick when consuming too much of something, eating nightshade vegetables, high fructose, rice, oats, dairy, soy, chocolate, etc.

It is so frustrating because there are just so many variables at work and there is no specific answer in solving this dilemma. :(

I can see the frustration for sure! If more sensitivities keep popping up, and you are certain about your gluten exposure you might consider getting a little more testing to figure out WHY you're having these leaky gut type symptoms. Otherwise, you are just going to continue to be sensitive to whatever foods are leaking through. There are definitely doctors out there that can help with this though.

In the meantime it may help to go back to the vegetables that you NEVER eat to help your system calm down until you can get some more help. You keep asking better questions all the time and you'll get your answer ;)

First of all, catarific, you have the mot fantastic avatar ever.

Secondly, I feel your pain. I have other food sensitivies & colitis and sometimes it's just maddening. But, the good news is that you always keep learning as you go. As long as you are putting in the effort to pay attention to what you are eating and how you body responds, you will master this and find sanity. For me, I have finally isolated what my go-to foods are for a colitis flare up. I also know that like you, too much of a certain food will cause problems (for me its oats). But the good news is that you KNOW this. And you can just keep a book of notes to refer to if it helps you remember stuff and helps you figure stuff out along the way. Usually I am pretty good about learning on my own - I only need two bouts of misery and the info sticks. ;)

Ultimately, you are right. It's no easy battle, but really, already you sound well on your way to ironing out your body's subtle nuances. Just don't give up - I am quite sure your high functioning brain will pull you through. :D

The most obvious thing to do is to ditch the oats and the soy.

Both are in the categories of very likely to be reacted to by celiacs, whether or not they are gluten free.

A diet (at least temporarily) low in gluten free grains, and high in protein and good fats, (such as avocado, coconut milk, olive oil ) may let you eat a lot of all the things you want.

I am gluten & lactose intolerant, and am also trying to figure out possible fructose intolerance... I understand your frustration very well!!!

I feel the same way.,,,, Some days i feel like there is NOTHING safe to eat..

I am finding that as I eliminate more intolerances, I have to be careful not to eat to much of any one thing FRUSTRATING <_<

What Takala said times two. Ditch the obvious problem foods that bother lots of people like us. Dairy, soy, oats, chocolate (unless its soy-free) and the nighshades. If that doesn't work look at all the other likely culprits like corn, and the top 8 food allergens.

Remember too that reactions can be delayed a couple of days and can continue for days. So your banana reaction could have been caused by something you ate a day or more earlier.

I suggest you do a search on elimination diets and read up on how other people have done them. They are great way to determine your problem foods.

And stop playing with that yarn ball! :)

my mom's idea of vegetables was potato salad :o Really, I just never cared for vegetables,,,now may be a good time to learn to love them B)

ya, ive got issues with Fructose Malabsorption- TWO bananas would kill me too.... im still trying to test my limits with certain fruits and veggies- because ive got to get some nutrition... just today, i had a green smoothie- (with banana)- only drank 1/2 of it- and hours later- im still in crampy pain-trying to ignore it and have anormal life <_<

I keep seeing banana's come up a lot. Is it all fructose or mostly things like bananas? The reason I ask is that depending on your genetic heritage, the amylose that is a primary sugar in bananas can actually be pretty inflammatory for a lot of folks. A quick check is to see if you get a filmy or whitish tongue in the hours after you eat one. It's not fail-safe, but it may be a good enough reason to stop eating bananas for a while. If you try it, let me know how it goes.

But maybe i also have what u mentioned because i learned very quickly over 20 years ago that i cannot ea a banana by itself or i will vomit, but if i eat something with it i a totally fine.

After I had a very bad bout of IBS or it might have been food poisoning or a gastrointestinal virus (my doctor could never figure out which after countless bloodwork and stool samples), I developed fructose intolerance - before that - I could eat anything (including gluten) and not get sick. Whatever that was I had, it triggered all the recent problems. My doctor attributes this to IBS - but I have had IBS for many years and never had these problems prior :( Now when I eat things with added fructose, I do get diarrhea (such as cranberry sauce, ice pops, etc.)It is not just bananas. I used to eat apples all the time - can't anymore. And now, forget any citrus fruit as well. I can usually eat a banana or have a slice of melon - but I have to be careful about how much fruit I consume.

Catarific, unfortunately you are not alone here... It sounds like you are doing very well listening to your body about what you can give it. Are you doing anything to work toward healing and repair in your GI?

I am not really sure what I should be doing toward healing and repair except diet - any suggestions?

      Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

      @plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.
