Delta Airlines - gluten-free Meals Out Of Atlanta

I've travelled on Delta many times where meals were served over the past two years. Every single time I am served Kellogg's Corn Flakes for the breakfast meal and wheat crackers and/or regular bread with the other gluten-free meals (dinner is always plain white rice and a plain chicken breast). All of the meals are wrapped in plastic and clearly marked GFML. I have only had this issue out of Atlanta and have contacted the company who responded that they would research it. I just wanted to give a warning for those who may be on long international flights out of Atlanta that you might want to pack additional food. All of the other Delta flights have great gluten-free meals (often including bread) so it's obviously an issue with the Atlanta caterer.

What a shame that you have had such bad luck with Delta. We flew from Atl to Buenos Aires overnight a few weeks ago and had an issue- our flight was cancelled and our gluten free info was not transferred to our new flight. Of course we had emergency food on hand since it was a 10 hour flight but it's not the same as a hot meal. The flight attendant felt awful and brought my daughters all of the strawberries they could eat. After reading your post, maybe it worked out for us after all- a meal with bread would have been even more frustrating than no meal at all.

From Buenos Aires to Atl we had great food and no problems.

Yeah it's always out of Atlanta never coming back! It's happened a dozen times over the past 2 years. I was on a 16 hour flight right after the reintroduced gluten-free meals and they didn't load it. Fortunately, I packed food. Haven't not had a meal in a few years so that's progress I suppose. I was completely surprised I got a positive response that they would look into it. I've complained every time and this is the first time they've responded.

I have no specific recommendations but I would suggest looking for products that are advertised as produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility. That should eliminate one possible route of cross contamination. It doesn't guarantee that none of the ingredients going into the product are totally gluten free but is should eliminate adding more CC to the mix via processing machinery.  One of the issues you may be experiencing is that testing has shown that a significant percentage of "Certified Gluten Free" products can test far in excess of 10ppm. There was an article appearing in this forum back last summer outlining the results of testing that showed this to be true. So, it may be somewhat of a pig in a poke when you buy this stuff, regardless of how it is billed. It may be safe for you if it actually fits within the stated requirements of it's billing.

I can still have a reaction from “certified gluten free” products I don’t like having to use the eat and see what my body does approach are there really any purely gluten free products or do I just have to make all of my own food?
