Why Is Everyone Itching?

I know not everyone gets a Epi pen but due to the nature of mine I have to have one in case a reaction starts in my airway, but when I'm itching or burning or getting edema or all three I just use Benadryl Allergy Liqui Gels no matter how careful you are your going to be exposed to gluten and wheat and dairy I refuse to suffer

I have a severe intolerance to gluten I'll get 10-40 welts ranging in size from dimes to double hand sized anywhere and everywhere and of course they itch, now my legs they will burn and itch and sometimes swell up 2 to 3 times there normal size I can get this just by holding bread lol never tried just looking at a slice but it wouldn't surprise me if I broke out.

Since my sister has Crohn's I get tested for that and they routinely tested me for Celiac as well so luckily I got diagnosed relatively early, that was about 4 years ago and it's also good to be tested for Crohn's as it's much more common in Celiac sufferers.

Everyone should be acutely aware that DH can cause swelling anywhere, including your airway.

I didn't know that DH responded well to benedryl. That is awesome! I use benedryl caps for swelling and itching I get from salicylic acid exposure and it definitely helps with that.

this is my first time bein at this site! what an eye opener! I was just tested yesterday for ciliac!! Welts & rashes (sometimes 2 or 3 diff.types of rashes) would come & my docs would not be able to fit the puzle pieces togetber! Reading your posts have practically solved my case! lol. I WON'T NEED CONFIRMATION from blood test to know for sure it' s ciliac! Wow! Happy, happy to figure out the rashes! thanks "itching". Sorry we have to endure this tho!

Swelling of airways and numerous large welts is not DH or celiac. That sounds like an allergic reaction.

The two conditions can go together (allergies and celiac), but Richard is right. I figured out I have a reaction to salicylic acid for instance which can cause itching etc. for certain.

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.

Welcome to the gluten-free community! It’s great to have you here. While gluten sensitivity or celiac disease can indeed cause skin issues, such as dermatitis herpetiformis (a blistering rash), abscesses in areas like the lower buttocks or thighs are less commonly linked directly to gluten. However, chronic abscesses could be a sign of an underlying immune or inflammatory condition, which might be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Some people with gluten-related disorders also experience secondary issues like bacterial overgrowth or immune dysregulation, which could potentially contribute to recurrent infections. It’s always a good idea to explore all possible causes, including gluten sensitivity, with your doctor. In the meantime, keeping a food and symptom diary might help identify any patterns. Wishing you the best on your health journey!

You say you have gluten sensitivity? Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease or do you refer to NCGS?
