Delaware Doctors Suck

Here's my experience with doctors----bad all across the board. It all started in 1999, when I was diagnosed with asthma from second-hand smoke after working in a casino where everyone seemed to smoke all the time. I was put on steroids. Weight gain, depression, anxiety soon followed. More weight gain. More weight gain. 2 doctors guessed I was bipolar so I was put on meds for that. Shrink says no,you're not bipolar. More weight gain. Mouth ulcers appeared several years ago, which doctor said it's from stress. Still have the ulcers, must be super stressed out. Thyroid issues and hormones refuse to balance themselves out. More weight gain. Underwent brain/pituitary MRI for possible tumors. No tumors. Went through 3 endos, couldn't find one that I liked. Went through 4 PCPs,couldn't find one that I liked. One considered me to be a mental case and said I needed "therapy and Weight Watchers." Took myself off the steroids last summer, thinking that was the cause of said weight gain. Have not lost a pound, continue to gain. Current primary finally referred me to an allergist, who concluded I never had asthma in the first place, that I have acid reflux that mimicked the signs of asthma. No asthma. At all. I'm pissed as now I have more meds to take. Referred myself to gastro, who guessed IBS. Recent endoscopy showed acid reflux as well as mild stomach erosion. Still no Celiac diagnosis. My brother said I should sue for being misdiagnosed all the time, but I've been seen by so many doctors.....pick a doctor. Which one is to blame for my downfall?;)

Sorry you had that experience it really sucks when you are sick and no one believes you. I had Neurological, Dermatological, and Gastrological symptoms as well as Thyroid problems. The Dr. sent me to a Psychiatrist for depression, the Psychiatrist said, you need a Dr. The Dr. said go to a Dermatologist, the Dermatologist said you have neurotic excoriation, you need a Psychiatrist. The Psychiatrist said it's probably IBS and Fibromyalgia and said go to a Rheumatologist, the Rheumatologist said, you need a Dermatologist there is nothing I can do for you. (without ordering tests mind you) I had an internist accuse me of being alcoholic due to vitamin problems and sores and ketones in my urine. I don't even drink alcohol. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia but was so anxious and depressed that I kept going back to the Dr. who said, If you don't take a Yoga class or go to therapy, I'm not going to see you anymore. Absolutely true. After 7 years of this with 25 Dr.'s who did not believe me, I finally found Celiac.com. After I told him the diagnosis and the response on the Gluten free diet. Now my vitamin levels are important, and my thyroid is important, and my secondary autoimmune disease is important. But I wasn't very important nor were my symptoms until I told them the diagnosis. This Doc still wants me to see a Rheumatologist and a Dermatologist but no way...I have paid them so much money and got nothing but humiliation while I was absolutely totally and completely ill mentally and physically.

I love Celiac.com. I wouldn't have medical care now if it weren't for the information here. Nor would I be well. I am thrilled with my progress but where do you go to get those lost years back? Or where do you lay down the Anger? All of it could have been avoided if even one of the twenty five had even a clue about Celiac. It was a nightmare. But now I am awake...and healing.

How did you find out about Celiac? How long have you been healing?

How did you find out about Celiac? How long have you been healing?

I pretty much diagnosed myself as the dozens of other doctors couldn't diagnose me with their years of medical school and advanced training. Hmmm, maybe I should go to med school? I spent hours online researching my symptoms, never thought it was Celiac due to the 100 pound weight gain. For weeks did nothing but research, then told my primary about my suspicions for food allergies and possible Celiac and she sent me to an allergist, who didn't do anything but confirm I never had asthma in the first place. I referred myself to the gastro, who tested me for Celiac, but I was negative. Still, after my endosopy two weeks ago,I decided to go gluten-free this past weekend.

I had 100 lb weight gain too! You will be feeling so much better in just a few weeks. I lost 80 of it in 7 months. Whew! And yes, you should go to medical school! We need Dr.'s like you.

Okay, it does make sense to continue the gluten challenge as long as you are already in the middle of it. But what will change if you rule it out? I mean, you have concluded that whatever label you want to give the condition, many of your symptoms improved when you went gluten free. Am I correct in that? According to how I understand your posting, the only symptom that hasn't responded to gluten free eating is the bone demineralization. Did I misunderstand? And if you do test positive, what will you do different than you are doing now? You have already been doing for years the main thing you should be doing and that is eating gluten free. Concerning how long you should stay on the gluten challenge, how many weeks are you into it already?

I mean that I will be re-taking the celiac blood test again while I am currently on the gluten challenge right now, but not sure how many weeks more to keep going, to ensure a false negative does not happen. Thank you.

Thank you for your help, I am currently in the middle of the gluten challenge. A bit over 6 weeks in. At 4 weeks I got the celiac blood tests and that is when they were negative. So to rule out the false negative, since I’m in the middle of the gluten challenge right now and will never do this again, I wanted to continue consuming gluten to the point to make sure the blood tests are not a false negative - which I did not receive a firm answer for how many weeks total.    My issue is, with these blood tests the doctors say “you are not celiac” and rule it out completely as a potential cause of my issues, when the symptoms scream of it. I want to rule out this 30 year mystery for my own health since I’m in the middle of it right now. Thank you!

I am a male and had developed osteopenia by age 50 which is when I finally got dx with celiac disease. I am sure I had it for at least 13 years before that because it was then I developed idiopathic elevated liver enzymes. I now have a little scoliosis and pronounced kyphosis (upper spine curvature).  All of your symptoms scream of celiac disease, even if the testing you have had done does not. You may be an atypical celiac, meaning the disease is not manifesting itself in your gut but is attacking other body systems. There is such a thing as sero negative celiac disease. But you still have not given me a satisfactory answer to my question of why do you need a differential dx between celiac disease and NCGS when either one would call for complete abstinence from gluten, which you have already been practicing except for short periods when you were undergoing a gluten challenge. Why do you want to put a toxic substance into your body for weeks when, even if it did produce a positive test result for celiac disease, neither you or your doctors would do anything different? Regardless of what doctors are recommending to you, it is your body it is affecting not theirs and they don't seem to have given you any good justification for starting another gluten challenge. Where you live, are doctors kings or something?

Sorry to put it clearly, at 15, infertility started (tried to word it nicely) meaning menstruation stopped. Which is in correlation to celiac I mean. Thank you.
