Testing The Boys

We've finally made the decision to get my boys tested for celiac disease as their sister has tested positive. They're 7 and 3 and I'm so so worried how they'll react to a blood test

I had blood tests and allergy skin tests done when I was a child. I don't remember being particularly upset by any of it, although the allergy skin tests on my back weren't much fun. Mom told me it would be quick, would hurt a little sort of like getting pinched, and that once it was done I could have a piece of candy if I was good and held still. I would put up with a lot for candy! The pediatricians office always had big basket of Dum Dum lollipops and if I was lucky I would find a butterscotch one! If your Dr. office doesn't have candy, put a favorite treat in your purse for each kid. Trust me, the candy was huge. Nothing hurts as badly when you have a lollipop. Mom also went into the room with me and if she was allowed, she held my hand. That was really important, having her in the room.

Well the pharmacy attached does have lollipops that they love and just in case, a shop opposite :D

Good luck :) I'm a full grown adult and would still do anything for candy

Lol They've been booked in for Wed morning. Mine and hubby tested neg, but obviously that doesn't mean the boys will. Fingers crossed they do. I assume they would at least have the gene too...

You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

One positive blood test result means you likely have celiac disease, but to confirm it they may want to do an endoscopy to verify it with biopsies. Unless you have severe symptoms now, you likely should continue eating gluten daily until all testing is completed, and should eat tons of gluten daily in the 2 weeks before an endoscopy.

Be sure to look at the inactive ingredients, as it might still be naturally gluten-free.
