Hi- I'm just wondering what people crave after they have recovered from being glutened. When I finally get hungry again, I eat TONS of peanut butter and chocolate and I'm wondering why. I would assume the pb is because my body needs protein. Chocolate? well, really, no explanation needed. :D

Ever since my most recent gluten experience I haven't been able to eat chocolate! It's horrible! It's been two weeks and every time I try chocolate I have the worst indigestion and cramping. I'm pretty mad about this...

I think you're right on the protein though. I crave eggs and meat. I think it's in part because those things are heavier and don't pass through your system as fast. I also eat a lot of buttered toast.

After my last gluten reaction, which was unfourtunatley last week-end <_< I wanted meat, which is very rare for me.

Broccoli drowned in cheese. It got to the point one time that my neighbor was buying extra bags to keep in the freezer for when I ran out and was ranting for another whole bag of broccoli. I ate it by the 32 oz bags!

Broccoli for me too! The weirdest thing though, is that before I went gluten free I hated -and I mean HATED broccoli. After started the gluten-free diet I had the biggest cravings for broccoli. I am now at the point where it is just a regular part of my diet.

Oh my God I crave pb and choc. 24/7. I used to have a really bad addiction to pb n jelly on rice cakes. I ate it all the time!! Even in place of a regular meal like dinner!!!!! I wake up every morning dying for chocolate...I always love peanuts M&M's.....

And I thought it was just me!!!!!!!

One "theory" is that pb for is a great protein, until you start gaining weight...With chocolate Ive been told by many that chocolate raises your endorphines which make you "high" and euphoric.

What do you think?

Ive also been addicted to nuts. But then again, since having celiac 6 yrs now, Im 32, Ive developed binge eating episodes.......

Do you just have those cravings after youve been glutened?

Not to sound gross, but after being badly glutened, I have trouble with constipation for the next 3- 4 days. Does that sound familiar to anyone????

Well- at least I'm in good company! I want pb and chocolate but I'm starting to think it doesn't make me feel good (I'm wondering if I have a problem with soy) . ugh! And yes- constipation is a MAJOR issue after being glutened.

It's interesting to hear what people crave- I love the broccolli craving. I can definitely identify with the meat craving too. Sometime I crave red meat and I used to detest it. It's like being pregnant!

I find I'm really hungry all the time after I've been glutened! I usually end up craving carbs too, which I don't normally eat a lot of (I find I have more energy if I avoid all grains, maybe because by default I then eat more protein?), but for 3 or 4 days after a gluten accident I am hitting the gluten-free cereal, snack bars, hot chocolate, etc. like crazy.

This is a fun thread! I never ate chips before going gluten-free, now they are my total comfort food. The one thing that makes me feel semi-normal. I'm not supposed to eat soy (haven't pinpointed it as an intolerance, my doctor just told me to stay away). The couple of times I thought I would cheat and sneak a little chocolate, it killed my stomach later.... :angry: drats!!! Foiled again!! Oh well, I just found a really easy and good gluten-free banana bread recipe, so I am craving that now.

Thanks Everytone for responding- it's interesting to hear what people crave after recovering. I thought I was having pb problems but I realized that the problem is that after a glutening, I eat peanut butter with ice cream and that is probably a bad idea as lactose is probably NOT the best thing to eat after you've been glutened. :P

This is really interesting, I crave peanut butter and chocolate, also salty foods.

I somehow managed to get really sick night before last, I still can't trace it to what I could of possibly eaten. Anyway, it is still hurting pretty bad today, anyone remember how long this goes on? :(

I don't think it could be the flu, I don't have any other symptoms, just the old awful I've been glutened sickness. Does anyone have any kind of a timeline of how long before I got sick I ate something? The pain and running to the bathroom started Wednesday night just as I was eating dinner. A baked potato, salad, abd steak. No additional sauces or anything like that. I am just stumped? I used to become ill soon after eating something with gluten, but this I made myself so I am sure there was not any cross contamination?

I've noticed my time line varies. There are times (usually when something truly contains gluten) that I am sick within minutes (the gas and vomiting is usually a dead give away) and other times (which I think are cross-contamination) where it shows up the next day.

I actually got violently ill this past weekend despite all the precautions I took (we were in NYC and ate out a lot). It was the sickest I've been in a long time. My body seems to be on the mend but emotionally, I'm VERY bummed out.

I think it varies from person to person. I know my cousin (poor thing) takes THREE weekls to get over even a minor glutening. Hope you feel better soon, Beverly

I can't believe it's taken me so long to enter a chat room for celiacs. I crave PB myself at times. But it's on a carmel rice cake with apricot/pineapple preserves. Very calorie dense.

I bet it has something to do with not absorbing what your body needs during a glutening. Just out of curiousity, what do you eat WHILE glutened (if you can eat at all). I eat JUNK and I've realized I've really got to cut that out.

I think simple foods like rice, plain meat, etc. would be better. My probl;em when I'm glutened is that I have NO ENERGY to cook. :angry:

Hi Sally- I wish I had some advice for you. I just went through an incredibly painful glutening this week and nothing I did worked. I tried ibuprofen, Tylenol arthritis (my joints hurt SO bad when I am glutened- arthritis in my back and neck), some anti-nausea meds I had gotten at my last trip to the ER. Nothing helped except sleep. It really was my only relef and i did a lot of it.

I also let myself have a long, hard cry. They say that crying releases some of the negative chemicals in your body. It didn't take much- it was the most pain I've been in in a long time. Other people take Calcium Magnesium for muscle spasms, ginger tea for nausea, B 12 (folic acid) for energy, but really I've found that for me time is the greatest healer (I take those supplements daily anyway). hang in there! Ingredients:

1/3 cup Canola Oil

2/3 cup Brown Sugar, packed

2 large Eggs

1 tsp. Vanilla

1-3/4 cups Gluten Free All Purpose Baking Flour

2 tsp. Baking Powder

1-1/4 tsp. Cinnamon

1 tsp. Xanthan Gum

1/2 tsp. Salt

1-1/2 cups Banana, mashed

1/2 cup Pecans or Walnuts, chopped

1/2 cup Raisins (Unsulfured)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease 9x5-inch non-stick loaf pan. Cream together oil, sugar, eggs, and vanilla in large bowl with eletric mixer. Add flour, xanthan gum, salt, baking powder and cinnamon to egg mixture, alternating with bananas. Beat until smooth. Stir in nuts and raisins. Batter will be somewhat soft. Transfer to pan. Bake for 1 hour. Serves 10.

I've used other gluten-free flour mixes instead of just the Red Mill brand. It comes out great every time (meaning my non Celiac friends even go back for seconds). It's the only loaf bread that I've gotten to work for me, and it's a great quick breakfast for me.

Hey Everyone, It's funny that you should ask that question. I was always wondering why I craved the foods I crave! I have some pritty good cravings too. I end up craving one thing for a week and another food another week. It's wild! Ive gone thru the chocolate sunday from Dairy Queen stage. The I know we cant have chicken fingers but REALLY WANT THEM no matter how bad it hurts stage. The I only want chilie for dinner the whole week stage. To the everything has to be cheese cake. Now I know that im not the only one. I just thought I would get my two cent's in! Thanks guys for letting me know im not so strange after all! ;)

OH MY GOD I LOVE THESE!!!! IVE BEEN EATING AN ENTIRE BAG IN 2 DAYS!!!!! They satisfy the fat craving as well as the salt craving.

BTW, as I write this, Im wolfing down a warm brownie cake (Food by G too) with whipped cream..........MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!! Have to indulge----Its "that" time of the month :(:o:(

Thanks Beverly. I am well and as normal as I get now! I really did forget how awful it is to get sick. It seems so weird that before I knew what was wrong it had become just a way of life and now if I get a little gluten I get so sick. I figure it must be that our bodies become healthy and then if gluten get's in it goes into a full fledge revolt. Sometimes I think of all the thousands of people that are sick and the doctor's don't think of celiac and they just stay sick. I took my Mom to the doctor last week and asked the doctor to check for celiac because I got it from somewhere and he was like, I'll test for it but I don't have a lot of faith in the blood tests. I feel like if I had known that the blood test was positive I wouldn't of gone through with the biopsy. Oh well, thanks for letting me vent! :D

I hear you! i saw my primary care doctor last week- who is a goddess- because I keep getting more and more sensitive and I was at my wit's end. I told her that I found it really frustrating that I didn't truly have a diagnosis and she said, "You know what. You've improved massively on the diet and that is YOUR diagnosis. Not every test comes back right." I wanted to hug her! Best wishes to you and your mom. Beverloy

Chocolate, definitely, after a glutening. Any sugar is good, but chocolate and sugar is better! I can't tolerate soy right now, so all commercial chocolate is out. I make fudge and keep it in the freezer for "emergencies". I also crave fatty foods when the intestinal pain gets bad...maybe the extra fat is soothing, or I just think it is. And cheese, lots of it. Dairy is one of the few things I can still eat, and it's always been a comfort food. Maybe it has a magic combination of fat, salt, and protein, who knows?

      I never buy any nuts from a facility that processes wheat.  It’s not worth the risk.  Surprisingly, Trader Joe’s nuts do not come a factory that processes wheat, and I do not react to them.  I am sensitive to gluten.

      If all testing is now completed you may want to let your doctor know that you are starting a gluten-free diet. If you symptoms go away on the diet it is further confirmation that you may have celiac disease, and/or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS.

      As long as the B Comlex is gluten-free, it should be helpful to you, especially since you're recently diagnosed and your villi are in the recovery process. You may need to look at further supplements as well, and it's a good idea for your doctor to check levels for many nutrients to see what deficiencies you might have. The most common nutrient deficiencies associated with celiac disease that may lead to testing for the condition include iron, vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), vitamin B12, calcium, zinc, and magnesium.  Unfortunately many doctors, including my own doctor at the time, don't do extensive follow up testing for a broad range of nutrient deficiencies, nor recommend that those just diagnosed with celiac disease take a broad spectrum vitamin/mineral supplement, which would greatly benefit most, if not all, newly diagnosed celiacs.

      How long ago were you diagnosed? There are many symptoms and issues for those who are newly diagnosed, and recovery can take a while. This study indicates that a majority of celiacs don't recover until 5 years after diagnosis and starting a gluten-free diet: Mucosal recovery and mortality in adults with celiac disease after treatment with a gluten-free diet However, it's also possible that what the study really shows is the difficulty in maintaining a 100% gluten-free diet. I suspect that if you looked closely at the diets of those who did not recover within 2 years might be that their diets were not 100% gluten-free. Perhaps they ate out more often, or didn't understand all of the hidden ingredients where gluten can hide. Either way, it shows how difficult recovery from celiac disease can be for most people.       As I mentioned before I’m pretty new to this. I’m about a month into being completely gluten-free. But I’m still having issues with fatigue, loss of appetite, and gas pain. I’ve started taking the B complex, and was hopeful, but that would help me get past especially the fatigue and the loss of appetite. But now I just read a more recent post where somebody is saying that the B complex is not necessarily good for us?  I was very comfortable with the B complex because our bodies shed excess B vitamins. But now I just looked it up and B vitamins can cause gas and bloating.  As I mentioned, that’s one of my biggest symptoms, and I also think it’s directly connected to my loss of appetite, which, of course is connected to my fatigue.  I’m so confused I don’t really know what to do now?
