People Are So Irritating

Went to Laguna Beach for the weekend with my bf and his mom and his mom's bf.

BF is awesome, is right along for the ride with the gluten-free thing now that he's adjusted.

Mom is super-sweet, brought corn chips and gluten-free salsa so I would be sure to have a snack, and talked to me for a long time about what I can and can't have, as this is new to all of us.

Showed them my dining card, then his mom's bf pipes up with " yeah I get bad heartburn when I eat wheat but I just take a zantac and I'm fine." I say " maybe you have a wheat intolerance, you should have them look at that" He responds with " Eh, I have my zantac". I'm like ok, fine, not my place to change his life.

We go out to dinner.

He drives us to - of all things - a bakery.

I had said earlier that I was fine with anywhere we went to eat as long as it wasn't a sandwich place.

Not only is it a sandwitch place only- but a full blown bakery. I didn't even want to go inside at all.

I tell my bf that I can't eat there, mom agrees we press on.

He stops at another sandwich place.

I have at this point - stopped talking because I'm upset and don't want to get mad and am starting to get that " oh i don't care" feeling.

Bf's mom steps up and tells him we're going to a sushi place she sees.

Sushi restaurant - I can deal. riiighhht.

Waiter is rude and doesn't care about my food needs. I figure I'll order Miso and plain sushi and be fine. The miso comes, luckily my bf takes a sip first and mentions that there are noodles in it.

Soba noodles! Wheat! who puts noodles in miso!

ARRRGGG.

So I eat a couple peices of sushi then decide to order a avacado/strawberry roll. I specifically ask - is there any sauce on this. he says no, then brings it drenched in soy sauce.

I order another one, but he won't take the one he brought back, or the soup.

My bf is going to get fat eating the food I can't.

That works out, I don't get sick, my bf is just a night in shining armor and was so mad at the waiter on my behalf it was adorable.

The next day, breakfast. Mom and I suggest a diner, lots of selection, mom's bf drives us back to the bakery. Can't understand why I can't just "pick the bread off" and "don't I have pepto in my bag in case I get sick?" Man just doesn't get it.

The good news is my bf and his mom are awesome.

I was frustrated, I feel better now.

what a drag! i've had similar experiences and it's sooooooooo frustrating. i've been pretty close to tears in a few restaurants.

i once sent a cheeseburger back 3 times because the waiter wasn't listening to what i asked for. it kept coming coated in or surrounded by junk.

i once asked for a piece of salmon grilled plain, nothing on it. i figured that saying i wanted absolutely NOTHING on it would be ok. but, it came drenched in batter. what part of "plain" do you not understand? who drenches salmon in batter anyway? grrrrrrrrrrr.

the mom's bf sounds like an insensitive, jack-a$%.

on the flip side, i've seen some really caring people who have helped greatly and i've met several chef's. they've actually taken the time to come out and talk to me. that's cool. the chef at Maggio's made me an ENORMOUS bowl of gluten free spaghetti so that I could have a bunch to take home. they didn't charge me anything extra either.

The mom's BF sounds like a real charmer . . . Sorry you had to go through that and that the restaurant personnel (you're a paying customer--HELLO!) was a jerk to you.

I can understand your frustration. It takes alot for me to bite my tongue when people downplay it like that.

Yeah, the BF is a jerk and doesn't get it. Does he tell people with broken legs to just "walk it off" too?

With regard to the waiter, you should have demanded to see the manager. These days, it seems that "the customer is always right" is dying out, but there is never any need to deal with an abusive waiter, and you should NEVER have to pay for food that you can't eat. A food allergy/intolerance is completely legitimate, and they need to accomodate us. What would they do with someone who was allergic to peanuts?

I'm sorry you had that experience. It really stinks when you are trying not to make a big deal and ask for a simple accommodation (i.e. no sub shop), and then get driven to every bakery in town! I'm glad at least the mother and bf spoke up. Sounds like the mom's bf had more problems than a Zantac could fix. :rolleyes:

Its not that hard to avoid sandwich shops, this guy has some mental problem.

sounds like BF doesn't believe about celiac disease and is testing you to see if you'll "crack" and get gluten; then he can say "see, I knew you could eat this!" Psychotic thinking.

Oh great! I'm going to Laguna in a couple of days! I'll avoid sushi places. Mom's bf reminds me of an in-law I have who was actually diagnosed with celiac disease! He told me, "Yeah, the dr says I've got that same 'wheat thing' you have. " So of course I had to say, "So why are you drinking a beer and eating a sandwich?" His reply? "That doctor's crazy. I'm not going to stop drinking beer!" :o

      Welcome to the forum, @TerryinCO! Do you know what blood tests were ordered? Was it for like you would have done for an annual physical (CBC/CMP) or celiac disease specific antibody tests? I find it interesting that your GI doc did the endoscopy and biopsy before he/she ordered blood tests to check for celiac disease, assuming the blood tests ordered were indeed specific for celiac disease. Normally, the sequence is the other way around. Was the GI doc doing the endoscopy for some other reason in the first place? The endoscopy/biopsy is considered the gold standard for celiac diagnosis so I also find it interesting that the doc reflexively felt a need to order blood work as well.  Just a heads up in case the bloodwork ordered was not specific for celiac antibodies: Going on a gluten-free diet before the blood draw for celiac antibody testing is done will likely invalidate the testing. You probably know this already but hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's disease) is common in the celiac population and there is a statistical correlation. And then there is the weight loss. And I assume you have suffered with GERD for a long time and that is what led to the Barret's. All symptoms of celiac disease.

      ...so lotsa questions and unknowns for me.  Gastro Doc did an endoscopy and found villi damaged so Celiac is suspect/known.  Subsequent blood work done and am awaiting evaluation from  NP or Doc. I've started gluten free diet and that's going well.  I don't have any real symptoms but have lost ~ 10# over last year or so....180 down to 170 ( I'm about 6'0 and always been on the scrawny side).  I'm 76 and up to now have not  had Celiac/gluten issues, but do take hypothyroid meds, and diagnosed/treated for Barret's Esophigus. I'm exploring the site here - looks like a lot of info available.  Talk with you later. Make yourself a great day! Terry

      @EricaFilpi, please tell us more about your recovery...did you need to take iron infusions or supplements? What other supplements are you taking? I'll assume you've been gluten-free since August.

      We have been tested and tested negative. But we have not done the gene testing.
