Starbucks Coffee

Hello, I have looked at the StarBucks coffee and find it to be ok. Question is will the flavoring in a french vinella latte get me in trouble? One more question. If I get into something that is not gluten-free and it makes me sick, how far will that set me back for staying gluten-free. This may be hard to understand but I don't know haw else to ask it.

Frequent accidents(once a month) is just like not even following the diet because you keep giving yourself damage and it will not heal then. The diet is the only thing that will prevent the damage from occuring. It will set you back quite a bit to have gluten. It's not worth it..the damage and the risk you are giving your body.

Starbucks drinks are gluten free. There is like 2 frappuccinos that are not gluten free( I believe the Java chocolate chip one-someone correct me if I am wrong but I believe that is correct) Also, the brownie one which would be obvious but I was told that was discontinued but may still be found in some Starbucks.

So in other words: that drink you want would be safe.

I love Starbucks! I had a frappuccino today...yum

I just returned from Seattle and enjoyed Starbucks quite a lot on my trip (even went to the original Starbucks at Pike's Market). Anyways, I emailed them about their Tazo Chai Tea Latte (which is awesome!) and they replied that it's fine. The Ginger Chai Tea and the 2 previously mentioned frapps contain gluten. Otherwise enjoy!

I dont think it is. I ordered one and half way through I had to throw it away becuz I started getting sick. I dont know for sure, but my guess would be no.

I don't really drink coffee but I got addicted to Starbucks caramel macciatto (sp?).

I'm not sure exactly what it was called since I never ordered it for myself but it was cold with whip cream and caramel on top. I miss these so bad :( Does anyone know if this drink is gluten-free?

I sent a big email to starbucks, so we'll see what they say about those drinks. My favorite has always been the unfortunately seasonal peppermint mocha. Fabulous drink.

mmmm chocolate.

Yes, it is gluten free. Pretty much all of their drinks except ones mentioned previously are gluten free.

Not sure about their new one though..haven't checked on it yet.

Thanks Kaiti!

Thats something to look forward to if I do have celiac disease. I never got sick drinking them so thats a good sign :)

My favorite is the Mint Chocolate Chip creme based or the Mint Mocha frapp......I've never had a problem with Starbucks and as Kati said there are very few items on the menu that I've been told contain gluten, however, i'd be interested in hearing Starbucks response to the email you sent elonwy

:) Woohoo! They just started offering gluten-free cheescakes in Toronto at Starbucks. I love the lemon zest one but they also have chocolate and they even label it gluten-free. My local Starbucks says they run out so fast that they'll keep one for me in their freezer just in case.

Just for everyone to know... (and I know its a hassle.. but) I would ask the Starbucks employee to clean out the blender that they are making your drink in. Sometimes they don't wash it out (most of the time they do, though) and there is a chance of cross-contamination.

gluten-free Cheescake? Is that possible in a Starbucks?

I know they usually wash them out in between anyway after talking to a friend that works there.

Also, considering very few drinks actually have gluten in it I would think it would not be as much of a risk as some places. Still wouldn't hurt to make sure they clean it in case.

I guess it would be possible for gluten free cheescake at Starbucks. It's good if they are doing that but I have never seen it here.

:P Yeah! gluten-free Cheesecake! There is no crust. They pour the batter into cupcake papers. They have lemon zest, lemon with a strawberry swirl and chocolate. Make sure you don't see them on the same tray as something else....ask for it. It's getting common to see it in Toronto, but maybe not every city is carrying it. Of course I used to avert my eyes when walking past the pastry case so it took me a while to see it. I looked so grateful the first time, they even put it on a plate with a fork so I could savor it at leisure at my table.

:o CHEESECAKE!!!!!

I love cheesecake...its one of my most favorite things in the world! Last year someone got me a whole cheesecake from the Cheescake Factory for my b-day...I didn't eat the whole thing. Many many days recently I've thought about cheesecake and wished that I had eaten that *whole* cake....what was I thinking!!!!

That would be sooo awesome if I could find some in one of the Starbucks near me.

I emailed Starbucks the other day and they sent me an email back telling me I had to call them to get the information I wanted about gluten-free products. So, today I called and they just told me over the phone what was and was not gluten-free. Here's what I was told: Most beverages are gluten-free EXCEPT: java chip, mocha chip, anything with malt, and vanilla bean. The two that I inquired about were vanilla lattes and hot chocolate/chocolate milk. I was told that both are safe (woo-hoo)

I would like, however to see Starbucks improve on this. I asked if she could fax, email, or mail me the list she was reading from and I was told that they cannot because their ingredients change so much that they don't want "old lists" out. That should be a big red flag for us that we need to be careful here! They did say you can get the nutritional information off of the web, but if you're like me...I want to KNOW what is and isn't gluten-free not just base it off of a list of ingredients on a web site.

Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know! Happy Sipping!

I called on the pumpkin latte and the nog latte a few weeks ago. The former is gluten-free and can be made CF as well. The later is only gluten-free.

Starbucks is the worst coffee I ever had! bitter y-u-c-k-y and b-l-e-c-k-y! Ooops, did I say that? {giggle} Sorry, don't throw starbucks coffee beans at me I don't know what all the rave is. And I love coffee too.

I, unlike most of you in Celiac-cyberspace that can tolerate dairy, I CAN NOT.

Last night I had a houseful and made a gluten free Thanksgiving meal, except for the stuffing I made outside the bird on the side for my guests. Oh my, they brought boxes of fresh decant desserts. I have to say I [have will power and can resist temptation]; however I must confess to all of you, I wanted to dive into the box of traditional holiday Italian desserts. It would result in a seizure, I know better. So I enjoyed flavored coffee and dark chocolate, free of dairy and soy.

Right now, I'm drinking my all time favorite raspberry flavored. I like "Brothers" raspberry flavored coffee, black with sugar yummy.

Hehe--I never cared for Starbucks either--i could never understand the big deal--of course, I dont like my coffee messed with--that may be it. Deb

Does anyone know if they can make their lattes with soy milk? And if so, is their soy milk gluten-free? Just wondering....I love their lattes but dairy bothers me lately. I hope there's an alternative cus' I love Starbucks!

Nadtorious Rookie

I had a friend that worked at starbucks and made my lattes with soy milk-they use silk, which is gluten-free. I recently started buying raw organic coffee beans and roasting my own-seriously the best coffee i've ever had, and its way cheaper. And i make my own soymilk so i can have lattes. Yum!

I don't know if some of the other Celiac's with thyroid problems like I have -- have the same problem with SOY.

Soy is not good for us!!! We in years to come are going to find out SOY is BAD. I have a problem with dairy, and have since birth. Soy however was my alternative. I love the way it tastes; Silk milk was my all time favorite, with rice cereal. Not anymore! After my food alergy tests I found I have a major probelm with it. I think I now know why.

On my blog I have a link to Soy Intolerance and it's problem it creates for us. Open Original Shared Link or here it is again Open Original Shared Link

DO NOT trust the medical community! Remember they are in it for the almighty $dollar$. They [want us to be sick], without our illnesses they don't make $$$ and can't drive those fancy cars, homes, jewels, trips and you get my drift....

Here is the reply I received from Starbucks (about a month ago by phone)

For drinks, everything is gluten free,

EXCEPT

-java chips ...which are in JavaChip Fraps and Mint Mocha Fraps

-2 types of Tazo Tea (which are rare tyes, not in most stores): Green Ginger and Honey Bush

...also don't get the fraps malted (obviously).

Hope this helps :)

I think it takes different people different amounts of time, but in my own case I had pain,  bloating and loose stools for some time, exacerbated by a lactose intolerance, which eventually went. Fatigue can be due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly iron, vitamin D and B12.  Were these levels tested?  If not, I would suggest you get them done. If your daughter is deficient in these, do if will be worth addressing them and getting the tests redone in a few months, particularly the iron, because too much can be dangerous.

Hello,   The medication in these inhalers can cause a thiamine deficiency if used by someone already low in thiamine.  We don't absorb sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals due to the inflammation and damage done to our villi in Celiac Disease.  Even a long term strict gluten free diet may not provide sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals.  There are eight B vitamins that all work together.  Thiamine deficiency often shows up first because our bodies use so much of it and it can't be stored very long. Thiamine deficiency symptoms can appear in as little as three days.  Without thiamine, the other B vitamins may not be able to function properly.   Thiamine is needed to clear lactic acid accumulation caused by the inhalers: Shoshin beriberi provoked by the inhalation of salbutamol https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12951730/    Significant Lactic Acidosis from Albuterol https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5965110/ Albuterol-Induced Type B Lactic Acidosis: Not an Uncommon Finding https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7263006/ Lessons of the month 1: Salbutamol induced lactic acidosis: clinically recognised but often forgotten https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6964186/ An Overview of Type B Lactic Acidosis Due to Thiamine (B1) Deficiency https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10731935/   Thiamine has antifungal and antibacterial properties.  Thiamine helps keep Candida in check.  Thiamine helps keep SIBO in check.  Thiamine helps with black mold, Aspergillis infection.  Riboflavin helps fight Candida infection in the mouth. Hoarseness in pellagra https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21507655/ Hidden Hunger: A Pellagra Case Report https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8152714/   Anesthesia can cause B12 deficiency.  B12 deficiency can show up as mouth sores and geographic tongue, diarrhea, and dementia. Blood tests are not accurate measurements of vitamin levels, but do talk to your doctor and nutritionist about supplementing with the eight B vitamins, Vitamin C, the four fat soluble vitamins and minerals like magnesium.  Your physician can give you a shot of B12 before anesthesia administration.   By the way, Celiac Disease genes have been traced back to having originated in Neanderthals.  I'm not a singing teacher on the net.  I earned a degree in Microbiology after studying nutrition because I wanted to know what vitamins are doing inside the body.  I've experienced nutritional deficiencies myself. Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!

Welcome to the forum, @jnstefan! She should start feeling better within a week or two if she is truly avoiding gluten and if she isn't also showing intolerance to other foods. It is quite common for celiacs to be dairy intolerant (not just the lactose but the protein casein in dairy) and to oats (protein is avenin). Casein and avenin have structures similar to gluten. We call this cross reactivity (not to be confused with cross contamination). So, you might look at pulling these two food items from her diet to see if there is improvement. But achieving a gluten free state is more challenging than people realize when the first start in. It is hidden in so many foods you would never expect to find it in like soy sauce and canned tomato soup, just to site two examples. This might help:

My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with Celiac 2 weeks ago. We've been on gluten free diet now for 2 weeks. She still experiences abdominal pain at times , and is struggling with fatigue. What is everyone's experience with how long it takes for the body to heal and stabilize after starting the gluten free diet? Thanks for any feedback!
    • thejayland10
thank you for the insight  Thank a small elevation can be due to this or is it more likely to be cross contamination ?
