Your experience pretty much parallels my own except that I don't get the flat, large, disc-shaped type. However, I do get the first two types you described, and I get them on my face, neck, the sole of one foot, and on one hand. Since you're new to DH, I'm wondering if you know to also eliminate iodine from your diet for a while. With many of us (if not all), iodine plays a large part in the equation. For me, both gluten and iodine need to be present for me to break out, and I was able to control the DH for many years just by eliminating half of the equation: the iodine. I didn't know that I had celiac or DH, so I thought I merely had a strange allergy to iodine. Anyway, you might try eliminating iodized salt, salty foods (like crackers, popcorn, nuts, chips, etc.), seafood, and dairy (only if the dairy in your area is high in iodine). I've had good luck with organic dairy; otherwise, the dairy in my area tends to be high in iodine. You'll notice that the itching will diminish rapidly if you avoid iodine.

Good luck to you...and I'm glad you figured this whole thing out.

Hello rosetapper23,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, my research has made me aware that iodine is a trigger for the IgA deposits in the skin. I'm glad you don't experience the large lesions that I do. Particularly nasty !!! My greatest hurdle is that I love both salt and bread, well, wheat based bread which I can no longer consume, as well as seafood. I'm learning to cope though . . .

Thanks to Fukushima, ALL our local dairy has iodine 131 - radioactive, so, I'm minimizing my exposure. Never mind the " hot particles " we're inhaling. I'm both analytical and pragmatic. Thanks for your feedback as it was intended for newbies, yet you've proved I'm not alone in this affliction. My " hindsight " observation is relative to experiencing small pimple like blisters on my forearms previously when being in the sun, yet I believe I finally reached " critical mass " so to speak. And if you're hip to changes, the sun is changing.

My best to you also rosetapper23, and me thinks the way out is via sharing in venues like this.

Healing and peace to you and ALL,

WF

Hi WF,

Can you tell us how you were diagnosed with DH, through biopsy or self diagnosed?

I am self diagnosed and have head to ankle (still waiting for a calming of my DH after months :( ). But I definitely need gluten free and iodine low to keep healing.

You seem to be very self sufficient in terms of researching your condition and resolution which is most promising. It is quite a stressful symptom of gluten intolerance so let us know how we can help, what has helped you etc.

Where in Japan are you?

Hello Di,

I'm self-diagnosed for the record due to not having health insurance. But, my future wife in Canada must be given most of the credit. She too is quite perceptive. I live in California in the States / US. Yes, if my symptoms ring a bell with you, you like me need to be gluten and iodine free !!! I'm a non-professional researcher, and have turned that trend on itself in my case with the aid of my future wife. She is the best and though I'm jacked-up physically, she is my love and we both can read the obvious. In that I'm most fortunate. Our research shows that biopsy's aren't always accurate, and given my dilemma, I had to rely on my powers of perception with the aid of my future wife. Yes, it's not only stressful but agonizing this condition. I've also read most of the DH threads here.

How you can help is to help yourself and share !!! After all, YOU know yourself better than anyone else or a doctor as do most of us if we listen to what our bodies are telling us !!!

Again, I'm not in Japan, and feel for the people there but I'm on the west coast of the US ( California in the San Francisco Bay Area ), and given the jet stream, Fukushima is poisoning us too. I listen to the Jeff Rense show and have links to radiation monitoring here as well as DH / Celiac links via my and my future wifes personal research. Email me if you want the links as I will freely share ;)

Stressful is putting it mildly as I can no longer eat the things I like most, and can't do public eating any longer. I feel as though I've been put in a cage. Not happy . . . but I'm a survivor and will do what I must as we all should !!!

Do note if you're in Japan you may have a bit of radiation poisoning and I'd advise you leave if you can as the Japanese government ( like the US government ) will lie to you about the reality of the situation. If you have DH / Celiac you can't ingest the iodine necessary to avoid the iodine 131 poisoning to keep your Thyroid healthy.

For food I'm down to rice, fruit and veggies only. However, if you're in Japan that won't be enough sorry to say. Fish won't be safe either soon to my dismay.

I hope the above helps Di.

Do take the best of care and I wish you success in healing and finding peace,

WF

I had a feeling you might be here in California--I'm also in the S. F. Bay Area (Martinez in Contra Costa), and I know about the iodine 131 poisoning. Back when I was suffering terribly from DH in my early 30's, I had to give up all dairy to get rid of the iodine, but I was able to add in organic dairy after a few years. Unfortunately, my thyroid failed four years ago, and the medication I have to take contains iodine. As a result, I have a chronic rash here and there on my body that I've been told will never go away. It's not DH, since I don't eat gluten, but it's itchy and unpleasant.

When you mentioned the change in the sun, I wondered if you lived on the West Coast. I, too, noticed that the tilt of the sun has been out of whack for at least six months....and I'd like an explanation.

Don't forget that iodine in dairy also comes from the use of iodine to cleanse the milking equipment as well as the udders of the cows. I called several organic milk/dairy companies & they said they also use iodine to cleanse just like the commercial non organic companies do.

How interesting to read about you in the West USA being affected by the Japanese problem. Here in Australia it is a bit of a non-issue. I have never read a food product coming from Japan (mostly ours goes to Japan) although I guess some specific Japanese cuisine (seaweed?) might.

Can someone please explain to me about the change (tilt?) in the sun?

Merry xmas

Oh and by "non-issue" I mean in terms of effecting us locally. Not that it isn't in the news or thoughts of people here.

Excellent info squirmingitch, I hadn't thought about that. Thanks !!

Thanks for the " welcome " rosetapper23. Yup, I'm in San Leandro. Sorry to hear about your dilemma with the Thyroid medication. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Not happy . . .

Yes, the rising and setting point of the sun on the horizon ( regardless of season ) has moved me thinks do to a shift in the earths rotational axis. It's been observed in many places on the planet. This may account for reports I've seen that the moon too has shifted or rotated. Why ??? The million dollar question for sure. I do know that both the sun and earth are in the midst of magnetic pole reversals and that both currently have multiple north and south magnetic poles. And history shows that physical pole shifts have occurred in the past. As per the Mayan calender we are very close to the end of a 26,000+ year cycle. Could be very interesting times ahead. And I do have a tendency to give credence to the Hopi " Blue Kachina " prophesy. Only time, or the illusion thereof will tell. In my world there is only 1 time, and that's NOW. The past to me is a hangover, so to speak, and the future a projection.

Anyway, thanks again for welcoming me and do take the best of care,

WF

Hello diandliam,

In case you are unaware, the mechanism which delivers radiation to the west coast of the States & Canada is wind and " rain out ". Rain Out is when the radiation in the air mixes with clouds and comes to earth via rain. We had it here 3 days after Fukushima went down. Also, consumer goods coming out of Japan have been found to be radioactive. So, not so much the food. Also, we here in the States and Canada will soon have radioactive sea water to contend with. It's quite a bad mess . . . Of course the radioactive fallout, once it hits the jet stream, will circle the planet. But where you are the risk is much less than where I am.

As for the sun issue, please see my reply to rosetapper23. It's hard to know for sure as NASA ( Never A Straight Answer ) can't be relied upon for true and accurate data. NASA after all was formed by WWII NAZI scientists. Hummm, makes one think, no ???

Take the best of care,

WF

Welcome to the forum, @Bebee, Yes, Celiac Disease has genetic commonalities with MS, hypothyroidism, arthritis, Reynaud, and rosacea.   Usually a gluten challenge is done before endoscopy with biopsies taken,  however I would not recommend a gluten challenge before endoscopy with biopsies for you since you have been gluten free for so long and have so many concurrent autoimmune diseases.   You can still have the endoscopy with biopsy samples taken now.  After several months with dietary changes, you can have another to compare results and check that intestinal health has improved.   You can get a genetic test for Celiac disease which shares genetics with other autoimmune diseases that you have.  Eating gluten is unnecessary for genetic tests. For the rosacea, get checked for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) that could be causing gastrointestinal symptoms as well as causing skin issues.  Our skin is a reflection of our gastrointestinal health.     Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet has been helpful in keeping my own rosecea, eczema, and dermatitis herpetiformis and other autoimmune diseases in check.   Be sure to be checked for nutritional deficiencies that occur easily in gluten free and dairy free diets. Keep us posted on your progress! References: Clustering of autoimmune diseases in patients with rosacea https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26830864/ And... I am new here, I have been diagnosed with Microscopic Colitis (Lymphatic) years ago and have been gluten-free, DF since, but I still can have occasional bouts of diarrhea (still trying to figure that out).  I also have MS, Hypothyroid, Arthritis, Reynaud's and my rosacea has been acting up lately.  What treatment is suggested to help with rosacea?  I would like to know too if there is a test for celiac if you have been gluten-free?   Thank you, Barb

Gluten free/ non dairy , low calorie pudding ideas please?

Well, that's interesting. I am lactose intolerant and have been managing that for years. I'd be interested in seeing if that changes once I feel better from not eating gluten (one thing at a time for now, though). Helpful to hear about the avenin. I will do some digging and pose that to the dietitian. Grateful for your feedback.

Recently my daughter ate in nandos harlow I rang in advance to speak about the celiac protocals and learned that childs portion chicken nandinos is cooked on the same grill as garlic bread even if they are celiac! Even if you clean it this is not good practise and will be making many children ill. I learnt adults butterfly chicken cooked on a grill purely for chicken.  This is fine and what we ordered however nandos need to take note of your practises for the safety of celiac children. my daughter has been ill from their nandinos chicken before and i emailed head office and they wouldnt accept responsibility
